50% off on Steam for one more day. https://store.steampowered.com/app/499180/Braid_Anniversary_Edition/ Braid's one of my favorite games of all time and Jonathan Blow also made The Witness since then -- these two releases have made me associate him with the concept of masterpiece-gaming. Blow makes a lot of sense in his views on game development and creativity, and this game's got fifteen hours of developer commentary in case you're into that. This is on top of all the remaster-stuff you usually expect. One more thing as I've been listening to his recent podcast-videos in preparation of Braid: Jonathan Blow and another indie favorite of mine Edmund McMillan have been more interwoven than I'm sometimes realized. I knew Blow got a special thanks in Super Meat Boy. I didn't realize McMillan was an early artist that helped Braid find its direction (much has changed but still). It's wild to think of how much they impacted indie games in the 2000s and how they were just weaving in and out of each other's works in some capacity while making incredibly different games that are also some of my favorite games. However, MM3's problems problems felt more ongoing (like weapon-energy traps where you're out and can't progress, or Top Man's power feeling random), MM3 needed more time for a few fixes -- that could have really elevated it.

| HaRRicH 05/04/24 5:08:45 PM #112 | Ultimate's the best-selling fighting game of all time and I think it was EVO where Melee was oldest or maybe second oldest game to be getting many fan requests for it to be in the tournament. The series was once an island unto itself, but now there are many more copy-cats ranging from Final Fantasy and Playstation All-Stars to Warner Bros. and Nickelodeon trying to get a slice of the pie...yet SSB still rules that genre of fighting games. It confidently inspired the genre and never stopped dominating it because it was always the best in that genre (even Brawl).
I don't care too much if it's Melee or Ultimate, but if you think SSB counts as a fighting game then that series deserves a rep. People have been arguing for twenty-five years over whether or not it's a fighting game, and its whole premise is characters fighting. And if only MM1 misses this list, I think that's more of a point for list-credibility than against it. Capcom found an excellent structure for a game series and then took six shots at it on one system while they were already making other fun games too. They had it going on, and Mega Man was their best example of it. Donkey Kong: kicked off the legacies for Mario and DK, plus the King of Kong documentary released a quarter-century later. Open for other games this era or older. Street Fighter 2: wish I could just include Mortal Kombat with SF2 -- the fighting genre first blew up there. Now that we are in a time where so many games have crossovers, the idea of SFxMK would be like when Mario and Sonic first started showing up in games together. There was a big gaming rivalry there, and that burst out of arcades. Dance Dance Revolution: if you have any post-2000 arcade game recognized, I feel like this would almost have to be the one. NBA Jam: Tournament Edition: being on fire entered the American lexicon here if it wasn't already. So were many announcer quotes. I nominated arcade games I think back when people were arguing over Street Fighter 2 in the SNES Rushmore.
