Progressives lost two Democratic primary races in Oregon on Tuesday following heavy spending by outside groups, including at least one tied to the American Israel Public Affairs Committee, which has spent heavily to oppose left-wing and pro-Palestinian candidates in races across the U.S. in recent months.

In Oregon's 3rd Congressional District, Maxine Dexter defeated Susheela Jayapal, taking 51.1% of the vote to just 28.6% for Jayapal as of Wednesday morning. Jayapalthe elder sister of Pramila Jayapal (D-Wash.), who chairs the Congressional Progressive Caucus and has been critical of Israelwas seen as the most progressive candidate in the race and a potential new member of her sister's caucus. The Portland-area seat is solidly blue and Dexter is expected to win easily in the general election.

Dexter, a member of the state House, received an enormous boost from outside groups, which spent roughly $7 million in supporting her and opposing Jayapal. Pro-Israeli donors funneled $2.2 million through 314 Action Fund, a political action committee (PAC) that served as a vehicle for AIPAC donors, according toThe Intercept. Another PAC attacking Jayapal called Voters for Responsive Government, newly formed for this race, has not yet had to release its donor list. Ultimately, Dexter's supporters outspent Jayapal's 30-to-1, HuffPost reported.

"This race showed so clearly why we need to have real campaign finance reform that allows for public financing," Susheela Jayapal wrote on social media Wednesday, criticizing the role of outside super PACs, which she said timed their contributions so they wouldn't have to reveal their donors until after the primary.

AIPAC didn't formally endorse Dexter during the primary race but did congratulate her on Tuesday night in a social media post.

Another state representative, Janelle Bynum, won the Democratic primary in Oregon's 5th Congressional District with 68.9% of the vote, defeating progressive candidate Jamie McLeod-Skinner in a race in which outside spending was also somewhat lopsided, according to OpenSecrets data. 314 Action Fund poured nearly $500,000 into the race. The Intercept's Ryan Grim argued that the PAC's involvement in this race revealed the hollowness of its claim to support scientists and pro-science candidatesBynum is a McDonald's franchise owner.

Unlike Oregon's 3rd District, its 5th District will likely have a competitive race in November, with Bynum seeking to unseat incumbent Rep. Lori Chavez-DeRemer (R-Ore.), who narrowly defeated McLeod-Skinner in 2022. National Democrats have their eyes on the seat, which is seen as highly winnable, with President Joe Biden having won the district handily in 2020. The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee supported Bynum with more than $1 million in the primary, according toCNN.

As elsewhere, pro-Israel groups funded ads in Oregon that had nothing to do with Israel or Palestine. This a strategic decision by AIPAC and its super PAC, United Democracy Project (UDP), thanks to growing support for the Palestinian cause, according toPolitico.

AIPAC chooses races carefully, sometimes focusing on preventing progressives such as Susheela Jayapal from entering office rather than on dislodging existing members. After spending millions against Rep. Summer Lee (D-Pa.) in 2022, UDP stayed out of this year's primary, in which the "Squad" member faced a pro-Israeli Democrat. Lee won the primary handily last month, even though her opponent was backed by a billionaire megadonor.

Yet UDP does take on Squad members when it sees opportunity: It's pouring big resources into primary challenges to Reps. Jamaal Bowman (D-N.Y.) and Cori Bush (D-Mo.). Bowman faces a pro-Israel Democrat on June 25, Bush on August 6.

"Jamaal Bowman has his own agenda and refuses to compromiseeven with President Biden," a UDP attack ad says, criticizing him for not supporting legislation backed by most congressional Democrats.

Commentators have pointed out that the resources that progressive groups must use to defend the seats of Bowman and Bush limits their ability to help newcomers such as Susheela Jayapal.

"In a different cycle, Justice Democrats and the Working Families Party might have been able to help Susheela Jayapal, but they have their hands fulland their wallets committedas they seek to defend Reps. Jamaal Bowman and Cori Bush," Daniel Marans, a politics reporter at HuffPost, wrote on social media Wednesday.

Palestine is just as if not MORE fucked under Trump but we also lose a great deal of rights, cause extreme damage to our international interests, put Ukraine and the Baltics at extreme risk of Russia winning/invading and slide headfirst into a Fascist "Christian" Dictatorship and an LGBTQ genocide. Yes, that's obviously the consequence I'm referring to. Those consequences wouldn't change the reality of what Biden's doing and its moral implications though. Some people are not going to be able to sign on to genocide, no matter what. Understand that.

And understand that this is more than just morals, but self-preservation. I simply cannot imagine the average American citizen willing to risk losing their liberties and freedoms for another country like Palestine. At the end of the day, most people will be voting for their own self-interests whether it be short-term or long-term. Biden of all people understands this.

Four months after the FBI raided his Mar-a-Lago estate, Donald Trumps attorneys discovered four documents marked classified in his personal bedroom.

That revelation was among several cited by U.S. District Judge Beryl Howell in a newly unsealed 2023 opinion that found prosecutors had presented compelling evidence that Trump knowingly stashed national security documents in his home and then tried to conceal them when the Justice Department tried to retrieve them.

In her 87-page opinion, Howell said the likelihood that Trump committed crimes was a basis to permit special counsel Jack Smith to question the former presidents attorney Evan Corcoran on topics that would normally be shielded by attorney-client privilege. Prosecutors, Howell said, had demonstrated that Trump knew Corcoran had been tasked in June 2022 with informing the government that all classified materials had been returned, a representation that the former president knew to be wrong.

The FBIs August 2022 search of Mar-a-Lago confirmed that dozens of other classified documents remained on the property but as Howell notes, there were at least two more rounds of classified materials found on Trumps property following additional searches.

Throughout the opinion, Howell who was chief judge of the Washington, D.C. federal district court at the time described with varying degrees of incredulity how four documents with classification markings could have been discovered in Trumps private quarters months after prosecutors had subpoenaed them and the FBI conducted its own exhaustive search of the property.

Notably, no excuse is provided as to how the former president could miss the classified-marked documents found in his own bedroom at Mar-a-Lago, Howell, an Obama appointee, wrote.

In a footnote, Howell also noted that another Trump adviser connected to his Save America PAC had acknowledged scanning the contents of the box that contained the classified materials in 2021 and storing them on a personal laptop provided by the PAC.

Trumps office provided the box that contained the four records to the FBI in January 2023, Howell noted.

Howells opinion was unsealed along with a large batch of other previously secret grand jury-related documents stemming from the investigation into Trump for withholding reams of classified documents after leaving office in 2021, including some of the nations most sensitive military secrets. U.S. District Judge Aileen Cannon, a Trump appointee based in South Florida, released the batch of documents Tuesday after lengthy negotiations with Smiths team and Trumps lawyers over redactions.

Notably, it was Trump who had used Howells opinion despite its strong rebuke of his conduct to argue in support of an effort to dismiss the case against him over prosecutorial misconduct. That filing, also newly unsealed Tuesday, notes that Howell, in a footnote, scolded prosecutor Julie Edelstein for pressing another Trump attorney, Tim Parlatore, to reveal attorney-client protected information and for questioning whether Trumps refusal to waive the privilege was a sign of his recalcitrance.

The former president is correct that [i]f a witness exercises some right or privilege, it is generally agreed that it is improper to suggest that adverse inferences should be drawn, Howell wrote, citing texts on standard grand jury practices.

But she also said the exchange had limited relevance to the matter related to Corcoran.

Cannon has a hearing scheduled in the case on Wednesday, though she recently signaled that the trial on the charges Trump is facing is unlikely to begin before late summer and possibly well beyond.

Howell, who as chief judge presided over the initial grand jury proceedings that led to Trumps criminal charges in the classified documents case, wrote in her opinion that one of Trumps close aides, Walt Nauta, was clearly dissembling when he interviewed with the FBI about his own role in moving boxes later found to contain classified materials. Nauta was ultimately charged alongside Trump with attempting to obstruct government officials from reclaiming the classified documents.

Howell also recounted in painstaking detail the battles between Smiths team and Trump over searches of his other properties and whether his attorneys had been attempting to frustrate the prosecutors efforts to enforce their subpoena for the remaining classified records at Trumps home.

In addition to allowing Smiths team to question Corcoran, she agreed that 88 documents Corcoran had been attempting to withhold via attorney-client privilege must also be disclosed because they were sufficiently in furtherance of the former presidents criminal scheme.

It's been wiped off the map under Biden though. All the housing, schools, hospitals, infrastructure is gone. Israel has openly proclaimed that they'll never allow Palestinian sovereignty or freedom. They've openly stated that they want all Palestinians to no longer be there through "voluntary migration" or death. All of this under Biden.

You've gotta grapple with this reality to see why people are struggling with voting for Biden. Anything less is not going to get them back.

Agree with all of this. A better argument for people who want to make it "Biden v Trump" is to make it "Democracy v Fascism". The Republican Party will absolutely turn us into some model of either Hungary or Russia if they're ever given the chance, with or without Trump.

This election season is the time to just say it straight out without any of the niceties we grew up taught to display in order to respect opposing political opinions. The modern GOP is evil, and has been for a long time. Donald Trump is evil, and has been since before he entered politics.

If you vote GOP or refuse to vote for Biden, the only realistic alternative at this point, then you are endorsing evil. You are allowing it to slither into power, to harm this country, and to hurt marginalized people who are our neighbors and friends.

The floor is completely wrong. Although the Muromachi period did start to see tatami rooms beyond just a sleeping and sitting tatami, they absolutely did not look like this. Additionally sitting in seiza was not a standardized thing until much later in the Edo period. The way the samurai are sitting here would never happen in a period drama made in Japan. It's a very obvious mistake. You can look up sitting samurai from the period and will notice that cross legged sitting, agura, is by far the most common at that time. Seiza was facilitated by the full tatami rooms that became standard in the Edo period and the rules requiring it followed that development.

If video game companies are going to make titles that take place in Japan, they need to hire more people who have a deeper understanding of the country's history and culture. I still remember Japanese fans making fun of the first Tomb Raider reboot because of Himiko anachronistically looking like a geisha.
