WASHINGTON The Supreme Court on Friday upheld a law banning domestic abusers from owning guns, showing that a conservative court that has expanded gun rights also sees areas for limitations.

"Since the founding, our Nations firearm laws have included provisions preventing individuals who threaten physical harm to others from misusing firearms," Chief Justice John Roberts wrote for the 8-1 majority.

Justice Clarence Thomas, the lone dissenter, said there isn't a "single historical regulation" that justifies the ban.

Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson joined the majority but quibbled with analyzing statutes based on how they would have been viewed historically. She said a historical perspective on the Second Amendment would depend on the historians who are consulted.

The gang rape of a 12-year-old Jewish girl sparked nationwide outrage in France with President Emmanuel Macron on Wednesday condemning the "scourge" of anti-Semitism after two 13-year-old boys were charged.

Amid recriminations between rival political parties campaigning for a national election later this month, hundreds took part in demonstrations against anti-Semitism in Paris and Lyon.

The girl told police she was approached by three boys aged between 12 and 13 whilst in a park near her home in the northwestern Paris suburb of Courbevoie on Saturday evening, police sources said.

She was dragged into a shed where the suspects beat her and "forced" her to have sex "while uttering death threats and anti-Semitic remarks", one police source told AFP.

The girl said she had been called a "dirty Jew", another police source said.

One boy asked her questions about "her Jewish religion" and Israel, the source added, citing the child's statement to investigators.

The rape was filmed by one boy and another threatened to kill the girl if she told authorities about her ordeal, police sources said.

A friend who was with her in the park identified two of the attackers and three boys were arrested on Monday. Two of them, both aged 13, were charged on Tuesday with gang rape, anti-Semitic insults and violence, and issuing death threats. They have been taken into custody.

The third boy, 12, was charged with anti-Semitic insults and violence and issuing death threats, but not with rape. He was allowed to return home.

The prosecution service said in a statement that the accused boys had "expressed regret towards the victim without discussing their implication in the facts" of the case.

France has the largest Jewish community of any country outside Israel and the United States as well as Europe's largest Muslim community. There has been a surge in anti-Semitic acts since Hamas's October 7 attack on Israel set off the Gaza war.

"Raped at 12 because she was Jewish", said one banner at a demonstration in central Paris where Justice Minister Eric Dupond-Moretti was among well-known figures to take part.

Macron told a cabinet meeting of government ministers that the "scourge of anti-Semitism" was threatening French schools, a source close to the president said.

The source said the president called for "dialogue" about racism and hatred of Jews in schools to prevent "hate speech with serious consequences" from "infiltrating" classrooms.

Far-right figurehead Marine Le Pen, whose National Rally party is tipped to make major gains in the election, slammed the "extreme left" for "stigmatising Jewish people" since the Israel-Hamas war started.

Jean-Luc Melenchon, head of the hard left France Unbowed (LFI) party, who has been accused of minimising the importance of anti-Jewish attacks, condemned "anti-Semitic racism".

The head of France's Jewish Central Consistory, Elie Korchia, condemned what he called "a sordid and unworthy sexual crime" while the country's chief rabbi Haim Korsia said he was "horrified" and that "no one should be excused in the face of this unprecedented wave of anti-Semitism".

Courbevoie's centre-right mayor Jacques Kossowski condemned "an abject act" and called for the perpetrators to be met with the full force of the law "whatever their age".

Anti-Semitic acts in France increased threefold in the first months of 2024 compared to the same period a year ago, official figures show.

Of the 1,676 anti-Semitic acts recorded in 2023, 12.7 percent took place in schools.

Gileads experimental twice-yearly medicine to prevent HIV was 100% effective in a late-stage trial, the company said Thursday.

None of the roughly 2,000 women in the trial who received the lenacapavir shot had contracted HIV by an interim analysis, prompting the independent data monitoring committee to recommend Gilead unblind the Phase 3 trial and offer the treatment to everyone in the study. Other participants had received standard daily pills.

The results bring Gilead one step closer to introducing a new form of pre-exposure prophylaxis, or PrEP, and broadening its HIV business. Shares of the company rose about 7% on Thursday.

What the world needs is people to have more PrEP options so they can make the choice of the option thats going to work best for them, said Jared Baeten, Gileads vice president of clinical development for HIV.

Before seeking approval from the Food and Drug Administration, Gilead will first need to replicate these results. The company expects to share data later this year or early next year from an ongoing Phase 3 study of men who have sex with men. If those results are positive, the company could bring lenacapavir for PrEP to market as soon as late 2025.

More than a decade ago, Gileads Truvada became the first approved PrEP for people without HIV who are at high risk of acquiring it. Daily pills dominate the market, but drugmakers are now focusing on developing longer-acting shots.

PrEP slashes the risk of getting HIV from sex by 99%, and from injected drug use by 74% when taken correctly. Yet only a little more than one-third of people in the U.S. who could benefit from PrEP take it, according to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Health policymakers and advocates hope longer-acting options could reach people who cant or dont want to take a daily pill and better prevent the spread of a virus that caused about 1 million new infections globally in 2022.

Its really important to have more options than daily pills because the orals arent going to get us to the end of the epidemic, said Bruce Richman, founding executive director of the nonprofit Prevention Access Campaign. We need to make sure that people have options to fit with their lifestyles.

The FDA approved the first injectable PrEP in 2021. That drug, Apretude, is given every other month, or six times a year, by a medical professional. About 11,000 people take Apretude, according to its manufacturer, ViiV.

Tim Oliver, a 28-year-old public health worker in New York, said he doesnt mind going to the doctor for his Apretude shots. But he added that some of his friends have told him theyd rather keep taking a daily pill than get an injection. A longer-acting option could be more attractive to patients.

RBC Capital Markets analyst Brian Abrahams expects Gileads shot will significantly increase the number of people interested in preventive HIV medicine. He estimates peak sales of nearly $2 billion. Gileads newer PrEP pill, Descovy, notched about $2 billion of revenue last year.

Activists have urged Gilead to ensure that people in countries where low- and middle-incomes predominate can get access to lenacapavir. The company has long faced criticism over the price of its HIV medicines. Descovy usage carries a list price of $26,000 a year.

In its statement disclosing the lenacapavir trial results Thursday, Gilead said it plans to share an update on how it plans to address access in such countries where people suffer high incidence rates of HIV.

A Michigan lawmaker was arrested Thursday morning on an undisclosed charge, police confirmed with FOX 2.

State lawmaker Neil Friske, who is a Republican that represents Charlevoix and Emmet counties in northern Michigan, was taken into custody by Lansing Police.

He's expected to be arraigned on Friday.

The public information officer with Lansing police would not say what charge Friske was arrested on. She also would not say if he was arrested while driving or at a location.

Additional information from Lansing police include that officers were dispatched to the 2100 block of Forest Rd for a report of a male with a gun, as well as possible shots that were fired.

Law enforcement responded quickly and made contact with all parties involved. Friske was taken into custody for a "felony-level offense."

In a statement from his campaign posted to his social media, they did not have "any details" about why he was arrested. While it's not clear what happened, the Friske campaign said he is "always exercising his 2nd Amendment right."

The statement also alleged the timing of the arrest was "suspect" for multiple reasons.

Among them is the arrest happened right before absentee ballots are released and that it took place a day after someone was conducting polling in the lawmaker's district, the post claimed.

Friske was first elected to the state House in November 2022.

He's currently running for reelection, but faces a primary challenge.

Nancy MacKenzie, the actress who lent her voice to Marge Simpson in the dubbing of The Simpson for the Latin American market, has died.

The Peruvian-Mexican voice-over artist was 81.

MacKenzie had a long an illustrious career, dubbing hundreds of characters in films and TV series, including Trinity in The Matrix.

The news of her death was announced on social media by Patricia Acevedo and Claudia Motta, the actresses who voiced Lisa and Bart in the Latin American version of The Simpsons.

"With profound sorrow, the Simpson children (Lisa and Bart) announce the death of our beloved mum, Marge Simpson (Nancy MacKenzie). Rest in peace, we will never forget you," Acevedo wrote on Instagram.

Nancy MacKenzie did the Spanish-language voice over for Latin America for Marge Simpson in the first 15 seasons of the cartoon series.

The actor who lent his voice to Homer, Humberto Vlez, also paid homage to MacKenzie.

"[We spent] many hours together, working and travelling. A lifetime. Your passing hurts me very much, but I celebrate your love of life, of being free and living life fully," he wrote on X.

MacKenzie was born in Peru but moved to Mexico in her 20s, where she became a stage and TV actress.

During her career spanning more than five decades, she starred in many Mexican soap operas.

She also voiced over many famous actresses, including Bette Midler, Diane Keaton, Sigourney Weaver and Judi Dench.

But she became most famous for her Spanish-language voice overs of cartoon characters, including Disney villain Cruella de Vil, Daphne in The Thirteen Ghosts of Scooby-Do, and Sailor Galaxia in the anime series Sailor Moon.

Theres been quite a bit of news lately about crime rates in the United States, and fortunately, pretty much all of it has been encouraging. NBC News reported recently, for example, that crime in the U.S. declined significantly in 2023, continuing a post-pandemic trend and belying widespread perceptions that crime is rising.

Last week, the Justice Department released some preliminary data on this years figures, which also showed significant improvements in violent and property crimes in every region of the country. The Washington Posts Catherine Rampell noted soon after that murder rates in 2024 are on track to be at or below what they were every year of Donald Trumps presidency.

Prominent Republicans, however, arent just reluctant to celebrate the good news, theyre pretending that it doesnt exist.

On NBC News Meet the Press, for example, Rep. Byron Donalds told viewers, I think its important for people to understand your murder rate may be down, but that doesnt mean that violent crime, et cetera, are also lower.

But violent crime, et cetera, really are lower. It was a detail the Florida Republican, whos reportedly in contention for his partys vice presidential nomination, simply ignored.
