As a kid, it seemed random when I could. But when I went back to the game, it was super easy.

What I think people get held up on is the Up! Up! part of the landing. Most people will just hold down on the d-pad, because thats what makes you go up in most of the game, so it seems like that is all you should do. But you gotta look at the altimeter. During the landing, you have probably been told Slow down! a few times as well. So if you are going too slow, you wont gain altitude just by pressing down on the d-pad. You gotta also speed up enough so you actually do go higher.

Once I realized that, I dont think Ive failed a single landing.

While its BS, people need to learn local laws and punishments before doing stuff like this.

tl:dr - It is occurring in Indonesia. He has been held for 5 months and has received little public attention compared to when Brittney Griner when she was held in Russia. He uses gummies as a form of medical treatment to ease pain related to Crohns disease. Arrested over $400 worth of gummies. Being charged with having nearly a kilo of cannabis, although most of the weight is from the gummies themselves and not cannabis. Likely faces life imprisonment or the death penalty (possibly by firing squad, based on past executions).

https://www.theguardian.com/sport/2025/oct/03/jarred-shaw-drugs-arrest-indonesia-basketball

I use cannabis as medicine: the US basketball player facing execution in Indonesia over $400 of gummies

Unlike his fellow basketball player, Brittney Griner, Jarred Shaw has received scant attention after being arrested for a drugs offence overseas

When Jarred Shaw, an American basketball player in Indonesia, stepped down to the lobby in his apartment complex earlier this year to collect a package containing illegally imported cannabis gummies, he thought that the medicine to ease his Crohns disease had arrived.

It had but so too had 10 undercover police officers. A video on social media shows Shaw, wearing a black T-shirt and shorts, shouting for help as the swarm of officers move to apprehend him.

The 35-year-old from Dallas, Texas, is facing the possibility of the death penalty or a long spell behind bars. He was a key member of Prawira Bandung, who won the Indonesian Basketball League (IBL) in 2023, and he has scored more than 1,000 points over three seasons in the country. But now he is languishing in pre-trial detention and is banned for life from the IBL for life.

I use cannabis as a medicine, he told the Guardian over the phone from a prison just outside Indonesias capital, Jakarta, in his first comments to the press since his May arrest. I have an inflammatory condition called Crohns disease thats incurable. Theres no medicine apart from cannabis that stops my stomach from aching.

During the off-season Shaw lives in Thailand, where cannabis is subject to more liberal laws. He says he had endured the pain of going without cannabis in previous campaigns in Indonesia but says that health reasons spurred him to import the intercepted supply of 132 gummies this year. I made a stupid mistake, he says.

But that mistake should not warrant the death penalty or a long spell in prison, he says. Theres people telling me Im about to spend the rest of my life in prison over some edibles, he says. Ive never been through anything like this. In the first two months after his arrest, he was at the lowest point in [my] life and in a really dark mental place.

I felt helpless and alone, he says. I didnt want to wake up again. But through prayer and his faith, as well as access to a prison gym, he is starting to feel himself again, even while the 6ft 11in athlete shares a cramped cell with a dozen men. I just turned 35 but I still feel young, says the former Utah State basketballer, who has played in Argentina, Japan, Turkey, Thailand and Tunisia. I would love to continue my basketball career.

Shaw, who plays as a center or power forward, says cannabis helps ease his anxiety and depression, as well as insomnia and the pain from Crohns. I dont use it to have fun and go party, he says. With my stomach condition, sometimes its hard for me to keep food down or go to the toilet. It just soothes the pain a little bit.

Indonesia takes a hard line on drugs and carried out executions in 2016, by firing squad, of an Indonesian and three foreigners convicted of drug offenses. More than 500 people including almost 100 foreigners are on death row in the country, mostly for drug-related crimes.

Indonesian police have said that Shaw sent text messages to his teammates saying that he would share some of the cannabis candies with them. What they consider drugs, I consider medicine, says Shaw. Its just different cultures.

After Shaws arrest, Ronald Sipayung, the Soekarno-Hatta Airport police chief, told reporters that the American could face life in prison or even the death penalty if found guilty. We are still running the investigation to uncover the international drugs network behind this case and to stop its distribution, Sipayung said.

Shaw was swiftly paraded at a press conference, appearing with his hands cuffed wearing an orange prison-issue T-shirt and a black face mask. He stood with his back to the audience as police chiefs exhibited the cannabis gummies, which weigh 869 grams in total and are worth $400.

He said that to charge him with possession of almost a kilo of cannabis is unjust and sick, given that most of the weight is made up by the gummies themselves rather than the cannabis content. Ive been charged for almost a kilo, he says. I didnt have anything near that.

Shaw is fundraising to cover his rising legal fees. He has not yet appeared in court despite being arrested five months ago, and he is still waiting for a first appearance date. Theyre making it seem like Im this big drug dealer, he says. Why would I bring the candy here to sell? It was for personal use.

Stephanie Shepard, director of advocacy at Last Prisoner Project (LPP), which campaigns for the release of people imprisoned for cannabis-related offences, said: Jarreds case is not an isolated incident. Around the world, people are serving extreme sentences for non-violent cannabis offenses that pose no threat to public safety. Even in the US, she added, tens of thousands remain incarcerated for cannabis offences despite recreational legalization in almost half of states and a medical greenlight in all but two. These punishments run counter to international human rights standards, Shepard said.

The potential efficacy of cannabis on Crohns disease is understudied but in September the journal Nature Medicine published a paper on a study which found that cannabis can ease chronic lower back pain without serious side effects. It came as Donald Trump talked up the benefits of cannabis-based medicines.

There are parallels between Shaws case and that of Brittney Griner, the decorated American basketball player who was imprisoned in Russia for 10 months in 2022 after authorities found cannabis vape cartridges in her luggage. Griner was eventually released as part of a prisoner swap involving a Russian weapons trafficker.

Jarred has always been one of the most generous and selfless people you could meet, his friend, Bree Petruzio, said on Shaws fundraising page. Jarred made a mistake. But I dont believe that mistake should cost him his entire future.

The US embassy in Jakarta says it is aware of Shaws case but would not comment further.

Donte West, an advocacy assistant at LPP who is handling Shaws case, said: Cannabis cant kill you, but possessing it can. We must get as much attention on this case in the hope that a positive resolution will set a powerful precedent. Im dedicated to making sure Jarred gets home to his mother.

The Indonesian National Police did not respond to a request for comment for this story.

TC i get what youre saying but it does look like he illegally owned a firearm, didnt have a right to work or live in the us, and was given an final issue whatever a year ago. Are you saying the US should just let everyone in fully open borders? Or this man should get special treatment because hes a superintendent?

I dont think it should be as black and white as the system is making it. Dr. Roberts has seemingly been in the US since childhood. We (the US) are putting up a display of We want the best that other countries have to offer. Isnt this it? The concern is for foreigners to come to America, take advantage of our education system, then go back home as we have nothing to show for it. This is the opposite, where a man received one of the top degrees in our country and has been using his skills to give back to our youth.

If the mission of ICE is to get rid of the violent and dangerous illegal immigrants (a false narrative if there ever was one), then this should not be a priority. And logically, it should be a non-issue.

ICE arrests superintendent of Iowa's largest public school district

The superintendent of the largest public school district in Iowa was arrested Friday by Immigration and Customs Enforcement, which alleged he was in the country illegally and without a work authorization.

Ian Andre Roberts, a Guyana national and superintendent of Des Moines Public Schools, was arrested in an operation, ICE announced in a news release.

Roberts has helmed the district since July 2023, according to its website. It described him as a "career educator" with more than two decades of experience as a teacher, administrator and executive leader. He previously served as superintendent in two districts in Pennsylvania and Missouri.

Roberts worked as superintendent in Iowa despite not having legal status and despite having a final order of removal and no work authorization, the ICE news release said.

He had entered the U.S. in 1999 on a student visa, and was given a final order of removal by an immigration judge in May 2024, ICE said.

Roberts had existing weapon possession charges from Feb. 5, 2020, according to the release.

Agents approached Roberts on Friday in his vehicle after he identified himself, but he drove off, ICE said. The vehicle was later found near a wooded area, and Iowa State Patrol then assisted in the search for him Friday morning, and he was ultimately taken into custody, the release said.

The Iowa Department of Public Safety said it assisted ICE finding a person, identified as Roberts, who fled from a traffic stop.

At the time of his arrest he was found in possession of a loaded handgun, $3,000 in cash and a fixed blade hunting knife, ICE said.

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives will handle the investigation into how Roberts acquired a handgun, ICE said, noting its against federal law for people in the United States without legal status to possess a firearm and ammunition.

This suspect was arrested in possession of a loaded weapon in a vehicle provided by Des Moines Public Schools after fleeing federal law enforcement, Sam Olson, director of the ICE Enforcement and Removal Operations St. Paul Field Office, said in a statement. How this illegal alien was hired without work authorization, a final order of removal, and a prior weapons charge is beyond comprehension and should alarm the parents of that school district.

Its not immediately clear whether Roberts has retained an attorney.

Des Moines School Board Chair Jackie Norris confirmed that Roberts was detained by ICE agents Friday morning. At a news conference, she asked for the community to practice radical empathy.

The Iowa Board of Educational Examiners issued Roberts a license to serve as superintendent in the state in July 2023, Norris said.

He was identified as a candidate for the job in a search by an outside consulting company and underwent a third-party comprehensive background check, the district said in a Friday evening statement. He had also completed the I-9 employment eligibility verification form and submitted required documentation to work, it said.

Roberts had a previous firearm charge related to a hunting rifle, which he disclosed to the district board during the hiring process, the district said.

He provided sufficient context and explanation of the situation to move forward in the hiring process. He has also spoken publicly about this experience, the district said.

The district said that it did not have any knowledge of the 2024 removal order and that ICE did not notify the district about Roberts detainment before or after the fact.

Norris said that while the district does not have all the facts, she affirmed Roberts has been an integral part of our school community since he joined. She also noted that he's held educational leadership positions in districts across the country for 20 years.

"We stand firm with our community, many of whom are feeling sad, outraged and helpless. We understand as we too are devastated by the news of his detainment," interim Superintendent Matt Smith said at the news conference.

Roberts' biography on the district's website stated that he was chosen as superintendent following "an extensive nationwide search based on a leadership profile developed with input from the school board, teachers, families and others in the school community."

It said he was born to immigrant parents from Guyana and spent most of his "formative years" in Brooklyn, New York.

"Dr. Roberts is married, and enjoys hunting, reading, and spending time with family and friends," the biography said.

He earned his bachelor's from Coppin State University, master's degrees from St. Johns University and Georgetown University, and received his doctorate in urban educational leadership from Trident University. He also has several education certificates, including one from Harvard University, the biography said.

Separately, he was an Olympian, competing in track and field at the 2000 Games in Sydney, and in the World Championships in Maebashi, Japan and Seville, Spain, according to the website.

Just played through the game for the first time in like 35 years, which prompted the topic. Shocked myself by playing through all 20 levels on my first attempt, although I was getting nervous on 7-2 (had like 3 lives left at the end) the last few levels definitely have a difficulty spike compared to the rest of the game, which is fairly easy.

I let everyone have a turn, but Toad paved the way.

One way or another, conservatives coming out against this type of rhetoric is a good thing. Not saying it makes them better people, if they are doing 1 good thing for every 1,000 bad things. But Ill take the occasional 1 when it does come along.

Apparently Tuckers comments came before Kimmel was suspended? Didnt hear anything until I just looked it up. Had to do with him saying that the administration should not be using the assassination as a means for targeting free speech.

Varies. Some are good, some are bad. If theyre done well, I approve. But that goes with any segment of a game, really.
