In most situations - not necessarily all - weight gain or loss long term is the result of consistently eating more or less calories than you burn. It is possible to use exercise to burn more, eat less to take less in, or combine the two. But in my experience, a slight adjustment that does not feel like a punishment is far easier to keep up than a strict exercise or diet regimen. That always has the risk of making you feel you are "done" at some point, reverting, and the problem coming back. I found crash diets did not help, but long term changing of habits did. Just don't expect the results to be quick. Yeah, that's basically it. In ~8 months I went from 215lb to 177lb. I used this weight loss calculator with Activity Level == Sedentary to get the lowest calorie intake recommendation for my size/age: https://www.calculator.net/calorie-calculator.html I followed the 'zigzag cycling' diet recommendation it gave. It helps prevent plateauing (ie. when your body adjusts to the reduced amount of calories you're eating such that you stop losing weight) and basically gives me 2 'break days' when I can eat whatever (within reason) in exchange for dieting a little harder the other 5 days. I feel I could keep this up forever. I recorded the calorie count of all the stuff I typically eat, using a kitchen scale and some math as needed for foods with unintuitive serving sizes. I used a spreadsheet for this and like the versatility of it but there are apps for doing this too.
