It's generally not going to hurt. The further away you get from a source of radiation, the less irradiated you'll be and the better your prognosis. In the vast majority of cases, it's not going to make a significant difference, since there's a pretty narrow window of radiation intensity where you'll suffer significant negative effects if you don't run but will escape them if you do, but it's worth trying, at least.
That is a very sober, reasoned response and you're right. I just had a mental picture of Ralph Wiggum running from the winter of our discontent. :)

This one is actually kind of funny. I work for a Dept of Transportation. We try to get people to do the 'zipper merge' so that both lanes heading into a merge back up equally. It's safer if people take turns just before the merge.

Buuut...here in MN people are too "MN nice" to stay in the lane that will be ending so 95% get into the lane that continues. Which results in the few people that don't causing road rage and accidents...as you mentioned. It's not an issue on the east coast, because there's no "nice" about it.

Anyhoo...people that say they need to "re-look at" things annoy me. If that's you: stop it.

^ I'm not sure I understand your point. We DO need some sort of system to figure out who is best suited for which jobs (and even train some people appropriately if we can manage that). If the system is expensive, or racist, or not merit based etc (all of which it currently is) then it has problems, but the existence of such a system only makes sense.

Nobody should look down on janitors/etc as implied in the Jefferson statement (although of course many do) but we DO need both janitors and engineers, and some people are better engineers than others. ...or do we not believe that anymore?

Not everyone should go to college or be encouraged to do so if their record doesn't indicate that would be a good fit for them. If someone would want to go to college for the experience if they wouldn't qualify on pure merit, fine, but in my mind that's the kind of person that should be paying to go.

Trade-based training (Germany style) makes a lot of sense to me, but it's still part of a system designed to sort people into jobs.

Well...that leads into my point: the classes are irrelevant more often than not. If you're not getting anything out of them there are only two possible reasons to be there:
1) The degree gets you access to something so you have to sit there
2) Broader campus life with its independence and new experiences is valuable

Those are both fine reasons and #1 could be enough for you, but remote does away with #2. Convenient, yes. A good method for personal growth? Not really IMO.

The idea of college is good. Buuuut...
1) The economics of attending are broken. It should be a test of knowledge (and, yes, dedication) but NOT resources or connections. Research focus, college sports, building mania, etc etc...there are many things broken regarding cost.
2) The demand for true expertise (the specialty of college) is low. How many jobs TRULY expect college grads to know anything anymore? In my opinion not many.
3) ...because instruction has become less practical. The American education system from top to bottom needs to do a better job of focusing and getting people on paths for types of jobs earlier so we stop wasting so much time. Broad education is fine, but not at the cost we're paying for it in time and money. 80% of the things being taught are rather irrelevant in the long run.
4) Remote-style college (post-COVID) is particularly pointless: you lose all of the independence/connections that are inherent to going somewhere.

Etc etc etc.

I underestimated him too. I only read a few general tips about him and people mainly talked about his massive HP but said he was easy otherwise. I could see how certain setups would make him easy but I was surprised by his damage output, constant status effects, and other nasty tricks he had. Personally I really didn't find him any easier than the other superbosses.
I never really felt in danger of dying, as I recall, but I did not trust my gambits to heal so I micromanaged...and it sucked.

SilentSeph posted...
If you're on the same screen as him but too far away from him to detect you for a certain amount of time, he will start regenerating all of his health at a rapid rate. I believe you have to leave the entire screen to prevent that but I've always fought him in one go. When his health gets low, he puts Reflect on your party, so you have to be really careful with healing gambits (especially with Renew which will fully heal him)
Ah. I never had that particular problem: it was the completely non-optimized setup and micromanagement for me.

Disagree. CT is charming and classic, but a great storyline pushes things to the next level. FF7 has one, CT...not so much outside a couple short segments. CT's music is good. FF7's is weird...but occasionally great. CT's gameplay is vanilla, FF7's is...well, pretty vanilla, but there's more variety.

I'm an old school RPG player who started with DQ1 and FF1 and doesn't much like anything made after 2005 so I know I'm supposed to favor CT, but...I just don't. Maybe things would be different if I'd played it back when it was originally released.

Oh, and I have no idea what's going on with the remake so I'm ignoring that entirely.

Nah, fishing is better. Many types of hunting involve a lot of staying still and quiet in uncomfortable positions. At least when fishing you get to move around and do whatever you like in the boat.

Plus you don't have to shoot deer. Fish are...not very sympathetic.

I imagine grouse hunting might be fun: you get to walk around and it's just a bird. Never tried, though.

TopicHow does one become more talkative?
wpot
09/30/21 9:56:38 AM
#26
I'm not naturally talkative, although I enjoy a conversation in a small group if we're talking about something I'm interested in. In 42 years I've learned:
1) I don't bother to trying to join a conversation if I'm in a 4+ person group with an extrovert or two. I'm not going to get in more than a sentence every 5 minutes or so at the best of times. Just try to become that guy that says something funny/interesting when he does speak up.
2) Work conversations are generally easier, should you still see people in person at your job: you can talk about work or coworkers or the weather or whatever. People are generally happy to talk so they don't have to, you know, work.
3) One of the less-appreciated-than-it-should-be losses in American society is the lack of local organizations/VFWs/churches/whatever where people used to get together with a regular group. These held us together, exposed us to different viewpoints, and gave us social circles. They don't really exist in the same way anymore. Anyways, if you have any "in" with such a group it helps greatly (I still occasionally attend a church mostly - to be honest - because there's a small group of people I can talk with).
4) In my case, now that I've been isolated in my house for 18 months (and the news is generally depressing) I really struggle to find anything interesting to say. "I sat in my office all day again and society is still collapsing" It's never been harder than now.
5) Try initiating conversations. If you start a conversation you can control the topic and you'll be involved from the start. But yeah, #4 is a problem (combined, in my case, with my general lack of interest in the things most people like to talk about).

As for masking, yeah, once my 9-yr-old is vaccinated and everyone has had a chance to get a shot I'm not wearing one anymore. If I continue wearing one after that point...why? It's not as if the anti-vaccers are going to change their minds and (more or less as a result) it's not as if the virus will ever go away. Unless I plan on wearing a mask for the rest of my life then would be the time.
