No, but my grandfather used to do genealogy research. He wrote a couple books on the subject. The second one was over 1200 pages.

Yeah I did one even though I have extensive family history thanks my grandpa keeping up with it. They're pretty accurate which is kinda nice, I would have figured they're all kinda bullshit.

No because as I mentioned in another topic it's pretty meaningless. Beyond my great great grandfather whom I already know of, there's no need to go any further.

Its especially meaningless for the vast majority of black people who are not still in Africa. You can't properly trace any direct family lines that far because of slavery. At best only get a general overview. Well unless you're like me and also come from a traceable line. Since one set of my family is English. That's how I know exactly who my great great grandfather was. And why I don't care to know more.

I dunno man. These algorithms are doing some wild stuff. With enough collective details they might be able to piece together all sorts of stuff lost to human history.

Eh: everyone is related to everyone else if you go back far enough. I'm European American so (like every other European American) I'm descended from Charlemagne. And half of the world appears to be related to Genghis Khan. What's that mean? (Other than that we should all get along)

And besides, if I get my genealogy done I'm going to screw over any of my family members who commit violent crimes (or myself, if that's somewhere I end up). :)

Ehh, you're both right and wrong there.

Only about one-half of one percent of the world's population are supposedly descended from Genghis Khan (almost all of whom are Asian). But most of the lines of descent come from the son we're not entirely sure WAS Genghis' son (he may have been the child of a rape), so most of those might not even be related to Genghis at all.

Charlemagne is a common ancestor for pretty much every royal family in Europe, but only a very small percentage of people outside of those circles have ever been able to meaningfully prove descent in any significant way (probably even less than what's normally attributed to Genghis Khan).

To throw in an extra one, at one point there was a theory that something like 10% of all people of Irish descent (both in and out of Ireland, especially in places like the US) were descended from King Niall of the Nine Hostages, but more recent genetic testing has suggested that theory is probably bullshit.

Most of the theories that a majority of modern humans can trace their heritage back to specific royal historical figures are based around flawed math and assumptions that don't actually gel with real-world evidence. It's wishful thinking for people who want to feel special, sort of in the same way that people who believe in reincarnation always assume they were someone famous in a past life. It's never actually been proven in any verifiable way.

That being said, every human on Earth IS descended from a common ancestor (also know as the "Most Recent Common Ancestor"). We actually have a pretty good idea where and when "Mitochondrial Eve" lived, and a pretty good idea where and when to find "Y-Chromosomal Adam" as well. So if we had perfect family trees for everyone on Earth, they'd all become identical before a certain point.

So yes, literally every human you've ever met is your cousin to some degree. Unless they're closer (parents, siblings, children, aunts and uncles, etc).

This is kinda the point I was trying to make in another topic where someone was going on about having lots of children to preserve yourself in history. Outside of immediate family and offspring you're about as related to your future descendants as you are to any random person.

I did, mainly out of curiosity. my DNA results lead to no major surprises and gave me a better idea of where/when my ancestors came to the US.

It also lead me to work on a family tree. I was able to locate a picture of my great-great-great grand parents, where I can see the resemblance. It's wild since it was taken in the 1800s.

Theres something strangely comforting about that imo

No matter who you are or what you go through, it will eventually be forgotten. When that happens, did you actually exist?

I mean, all it takes is a look in the mirror to confirm my ancestry.

That said, I did start a family tree about a decade ago when ancestry.com was really popping off. I didn't get too far but I did find one of my grandparents' (the only ones that I actually got to know, in fact) wedding certificate which is something that even their oldest kids hadn't seen as well as a death certificate for the only grandparent who predeceased my birth. Honestly, I found it fairly difficult to piece together due to a combined lack of records and basically going on what my mother could remember of her grandparents and their siblings. I'm much closer to my father's family (simple geography, really) so it was much easier working with his side of the family, though I didn't get past his own grandparents who were all born in the 19th century.

Always said I'd go back but I never have.
