It's such a terrible movie.

A large part of the disappointment was everyone going in expecting something "Final Fantasy" related and getting something completely original that didn't feel like FF at all apart from having a guy named Sid and references to earth-magic and souls.

But even beyond that, it's just a mediocre movie with mostly meh voice-acting and a dull plot. And an ending that might fit the Japanese aesthetic but which was pretty much inevitably going to piss off the majority of the Western audience. With borderline Uncanny Valley issues.

If they'd done less stuff like this and more stuff like Final Flight of the Osiris, they might not have gone bankrupt and been forced into a disastrous "merger" with (which was really just an outright acquisition by) Enix.

I didn't hate the movie, and I still have the DVD (unlike some game discs I won't mention), but yeah, it's bad.

If only PS1 cutscenes looked anywhere near that great. The movie still looks pretty nice today honestly.

Yeah, but the theme of those games is that the universe is pretty much broken and everything's terrible, and no matter how hard you try to fix things they only get worse.

So in that universe maybe it is the best movie ever. Because everything else has gone horribly, horribly wrong.

The visuals themselves were great for the time, and still look decent today. But the animation is very stiff and wooden.

Plus it needed more spiky hair and fire magic
