As it turns out, the same hardware that's good for rendering video is also good for crypto mining (which I'm guessing isn't at all surprising to anyone that understands the hardware requirements for both processes, but I am not such a person), so higher-end video cards have been flying off the shelves as mining operations snap them up. Graphics cards are good at extremely simple math, applied extremely fast. That's, more or less, what they're built for. Cryptocurrency is solving incredibly complex, and arbitrary math problems by brute force (i.e. "does 1 work, does 2 work"). 3D graphics is a lot of moving pylons through matrices by shifting and warping them. This is done through long, simple math that computers excel in (araaaaaays). That's the long and short of it. |
