Cheats exist, both inside games and out. No shame in using them, as long as you aren't doing so to the point that you suck all the fun out of things. Infinite life cheats are nice for oldschool games, they sort of feel like training wheels. Some of the old Castlevanias actually come with cheats baked into them; I recommend looking them up. If he's playing the metroidvanias, a money or drop rate cheat might help him out without breaking the game. Imo, Castlevania 1 is about as hard as a NES game can get while still being pretty fair.
