I thought movement felt great in HK -- probably that game's biggest strength for me. Part of the reason I was so okay with the high difficulty is because (unlike something like Dark Souls) I was never fighting the game's controls. Everything felt super precise and doable.

I haven't played Ori 2 yet but I basically agree that the first wasn't much to write home about. I thought the movement felt sloppy and the combat was pretty bad. I also thought the game was ugly and had a nothing plot. (not plot spoilers, just very unpopular opinions in the tags lol)

I'll get around to the second at some point, based on what I've heard I think I'll like it at least somewhat more.

This one's an oldie but a goodie: Aquaria

It doesn't have much in the way of platforming for a Metroidvania since most of it is underwater, but the combat and exploration are solid and it's a very cool setting with great atmosphere and lots of secrets. Story kinda sucks unfortunately, but it's not a big deal.

Another old one: Shadow Complex

It's a Super Metroid-style Metroidvania with some 3rd person shooter sensibilities. Setting and story are kinda crap but great gameplay and again, tons and tons of secrets.

In terms of newer games... which elements of metroidvanias do you like the most? Hard to make a recommendation without knowing that since something like Yoku is completely different from Monster Boy, etc.

I think Riku is at this really weird section where he's really difficult as a kid, but as an adult you breeze through him. I always struggled at that fight when I was younger, but when I replayed KHI a couple of years ago I got him first try without too much effort either.
Oh yeah, that would make sense. I only played KH for the first time as an adult so it tracks.

Aggelos (Switch)

Technically I guess this is a Metroidvania, but it doesn't have a map so my hot take is that it doesn't count. It's a lot more like, I dunno, Zelda 2 without the overworld bits. It kinda rocks though. Recommended.

I did play the next VN these people wrote, Heart of the Woods, and I didn't enjoy it anywhere near as much. The friendship between the two main girls in that was compelling, but their respective romances both felt so contrived. There was no realistic buildup or doubts like HB had, just suddenly two characters are banging, and of course this century-old ghost is a lesbian, it's a yuri VN why wouldn't she be? Ugh. Amber and Marina had more chemistry in one scene than those two romances did combined.
I liked Heart of the Woods more, but I agree the romances weren't as compelling. I thought the drama in HotW felt more legitimate and that the broader (non-romantic) plot was better; I was never really able to suspend my disbelief enough to buy into HB's gold rush plot. Enjoyed them both, tho

Angel's Punishment (Switch)

This is kind of the opposite of what I said about Monster Boy. Angel's Punishment is a worse game in every technical sense (the dialogue is littered with typos, there are issues with hit detection, the sound and music are buggy, etc) but it does nail the Metroidvania feeling. There isn't much story, no NPCs or sidequests, just a big ol' area to explore, collect powers, and kill bosses. You can probably whip through the whole thing in one sitting. I wish it was harder; the few reviews I found described it as fairly challenging, but after the first 15 minutes or so you get a better weapon and upgrade your health and it becomes almost trivially easy. I also wish it was more polished -- idk if this makes sense, but it feels like an SNES game that you loved as a kid but when you go back to it years later it feels like a solid 7/10 at best. Still, I bought it for only a few bucks and enjoyed it a lot considering that.

You know it's funny, looking at what people have to say about the difficulty of bosses, for the battles that I had the most issues with (Ursula, Dragon Maleficent, Chernabog, enemy rush, and World of Chaos/Ansem) the consensus seems to be "yeah they're tough but just keep pushing through" while two battles that people have identified as brick walls for first time players (Riku-Ansem and the 1v1 with Ansem, the one after Darkside) really didn't give me that much trouble.
I agree that Riku wasn't a terribly difficult fight, tbh I was surprised that so many people had issues with it. On the other hand Maleficent Dragon just destroyed me over and over.

Xenosaga 1 does suck. 1 is worldbuilding, slow, boring in battles and with just about no music and a plot that goes nowhere. 3 moves relatively quickly, has great music, actually resolves some things and has a good battle system.
I think 1 is probably my favorite of the three, but they're all successful and flawed in different ways. I think I give 1 the benefit of the doubt because it got to set up interesting mysteries and subplots but didn't have to worry about resolving them satisfyingly. On the other hand, 3 tries to resolve a bunch of stuff from the first two games and I almost universally hated the resolutions they went with.

Don't fire a gun unless you know where you're firing and you absolutely think you need to. That's gun safety and if you can't be that mindful to do that, then you shouldn't be handling a gun.
So is it being too mindful or not enough? I don't disagree with the "shouldn't be handling a gun part" but it seems like doing something ineffective and dangerous is very much a thing that could happen while you fear for your life, while coldly trying to eliminate your target might imply a lack of fear. Why does the justice system only interpret it the one way?

Also I'm pretty sure "shots fired into the air can kill someone on the way down" is one of those theoretically-possible-but-insanely-unlikely things. Has that literally ever happened? No disagreement on warning shots in general being dangerous if fired e.g. to the sides though.

Oh man, I've been waiting for this one.

I know the plot's pretty stupid and cheesy, and its lows are low, but it also has some very high highs.

The whole opening sequence with Sonic escaping the GUN helicopter and then City Escape. "I'll make you eat those words!" Shadow saving Rouge before the Security Hall explodes. Eggman blowing up half the moon. "Sayonara, Shadow the Hedgehog." "Because you just told me, fox boy!" Tails beating Eggman without Sonic's help. Sonic using Chaos Control with the fake emerald. "What you see is what you get, just a guy who loves adventure!"

I know it's unintentional, but the characters constantly talking over each other also gives it the most natural dialogue in probably the whole Sonic series. If only the voice acting itself was a little better.

I'm conflicted here but I think I'll hit it with a somewhat generous:

7.5/10

This isn't win-win for the cops because they don't want to protect people and behave appropriately, they want to be able to control and hurt people with impunity.
