I'm watching a review of Hydelide on NES. A slime is the first enemy you encounter. This game predates Legend of Zelda. I'm assuming it predates Dragon Warrior and Final Fantasy as well.

So if it didn't start with a video game, was it from a pen and paper RPG?

On the whole, it could've been better. We were too caught up in being trendy and new. The 90s were like an extension of the 80s in terms of style, but they lacked the underlining heart. Films like Gremlins, Back to the Future, and Ghostbusters had good characters and good stories to go along with the flashiness. Films like Bram Stoker's Dracula, Independence Day, or Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves were just style for the sake of style and no underlining substance.

There were some winners. Most of which had Spielberg's name attached to them. As much as I love the 90s, I have to admit that cinema collectively could have been better.

It stinks that these parents are trying to pollute their children's minds with this bigoted garbage. On the plus side, it's probably going to go right over their heads. Children don't pick up on allegories the way adults do.

It's also important that we have pro-trans media directed at young people. If a parent wishes to teach bigotry, those children need four or five sources of pro-trans literature/television to drown out what the haters might say. And the pro-trans crowd doesn't have to hide behind allegory like the anti-trans authors who write books about fish trying to be birds. The pro equality side can openly state, "It's okay if you were taught you were a boy but you're really a girl." (Or vice-versa.) They can openly state, "It's okay if you don't like being labeled a boy or a girl." They can operate in full freedom - without masks, without allegory, without passive-aggressive insinuations. The fact that the opposition can't even address what it is they're talking about is an open admission that they're in the wrong.

There shouldn't be an opposition to an individual's right to be who they are.

Yeah.

It's this thread again.

Yeah.

Trump is totally gonna get reelected in a democratic election and then become dictator. 99.8% of all police and soldiers will be there to side with him in earnest. And only a diverse group of young people forming a resistance can topple this dictatorship -- not to restore the nation to its former inequality, but to bring about a new nation with social and economic equality the likes of which the world has never known.

I'm not apologizing for people who are anti-trans.

I think the reason some people are outright offended that there are people who are transgender or nonbinary is because categorization is our first line of defense against potential dangers. For example, "These berries are poisonous." Because we're able to categorize harmful berries, we know not to eat them. When an individual defies standard categorization, their detractors go into panic mode because, subconsciously, they feel there is a fault in their defenses. They're looking at that individual the same way a computer would look at a virus that's able to bypass a firewall. It's the same reason most monsters are combinations of different animal types. If something is part fish and part mammal, it's unnerving because it defies categorization.

By and large, trans people aren't trying to frighten or harm anyone. Like anyone else, the vast majority are just trying to be themselves. It just so happens that who they are defies the "male/female" binary which so many perceive as being iron clad. (It's not.)

I received a work call from an Alzheimer's unit at an assisted living facility. There was a woman in the background repeating a name over and over again. Finally, a nurse (not the one I was speaking to) uttered "Shut up, he's dead" in frustration.

There's no telling how long the woman with Alzheimer's had been repeating that name. But seriously, a nurse is going to talk like that to a patient? Had the nurse who said that been the one I was speaking to, I would have reported her.

List what your five sources of inspiration would be according to the following criteria:

1st influence: a series (any medium) you liked as a child that isn't as popular today as it was back then

2nd influence: that series' nearest peer

3rd influence: the first work (any medium) you remember enjoying primarily for the villain

4th influence: a dramatic under-the-radar movie you enjoy which features action

5th influence: a movie whose climax just kicks your ass

For me, it would be the following:
1) Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
2) ThunderCats
3) The Lion King
4) Lady Snowblood
5) Ghostbusters '84

I guess it would likely feature anthropomorphic animal protagonists or characters who channel animal powers? It definitely seems like there would be a subtle martial arts side to it and some hints of the supernatural.

When there's a standard for quality, you don't throw out something substandard. That's like setting fire to a village to light a cigarette.

You can potentially destroy IPs when you do that and it's for nothing more than an immediate cash grab. Fans have a right to be upset about that.
