My family doesnt have the best history of finding pleasure in others company. My mom and dad have admitted to staying with each other out of convenience. Grandparents before them were similar.
On some level, this is what you're expecting from relationships, but theirs doesn't have to be yours.

Since you have different interests, investing in your shared interests is a solid strategy, as is talking about your individual interests. The aim is to be able to be happy for each other, even if you have no clue what the other person is on about, or why they would find that subject interesting. Bolo likes strategy games and cute magical girls. I like old films and morbid historical horror stories. We have overlap, but we also have plenty of ways in which we couldn't be more different.

You can learn more about what brings them joy and fulfillment, and help bring them even more of that satisfaction. "Hey, isn't this kinda like that thing you like" is an attempt. Even if you're wrong, it shows that you're trying to understand and connect - which is often more than acquaintances or even friends may try to do.

Each time, shes acknowledged what shes been doing, and has told me she will try to improve. I ask her if there is anything I can do for her, but she says I havent done anything wrong, which then makes me feel worse.

Worth pointing out that people who are not doing well mentally are not always in the best place to delegate and tell you how they need help.

As in conversation, avoiding simple yes/no questions may lead to more useful information - "can I do anything for you" will likely invite a quick no and a qualifier that you aren't doing anything wrong. "what can I do for you" or "what do you need/want right now" might invite an actual response, or you could offer stuff you know she likes. "Do you want a blanket or a cup of hot chocolate" or something. People who are depressed may not always take what's offered, but knowing that you're there offering makes a big difference to them.

The rest of this post isn't specifically to you, OP. More of an educational moment to anyone else who reads this thread. The thing about being in a relationship with a depressed person that can be frustrating is you don't see an immediate, positive response to your efforts like you do with other things in life.

The person you love doesn't magically bounce back once you bring them a sandwich or a blanket, once you give them a cool gift, or take them out someplace neat. You could have a fun day together, and the next day they could be shrimping at their computer like it never happened. They may feel a little better, even if they're still low energy by 'normal' standards.

Your person won't be magically cured one day, no matter how hard you try. But that's not the goal - the goal is to build a relationship, to show the other person that they're valuable to you. They are your priority. You want to make life a little easier on them - after all, their own brain is beating on them in a way you wouldn't wish on your worst enemy. That means doing the little things, no matter what response it gets or doesn't get.

How do you dig a trench with a spoon? One spoonful at a time.

I've found that eggs are annoying to crack when I'm still sleepy. Some nights I crack them into a container and just seal that and stick it in the fridge, make sure there's a clean pan on the stove. Then toast 2 pcs bread while you grease your pan, pour the pre-cracked eggs and whatever else you want in there, cook it up, then put it on the toast open face or as a big sandwich. Voila.

You can't apply modern sensibility naively to a person in order to vilify them, but you can do so to their actual work which exemplifies the issues. The debate was never about whether... whoever wrote the song is a rapist who should be blacklisted, just the song is creepy as fuck and maybe there's other shitty christmas music we can listen to instead

but are you still wearing clothing passed that expiry date?...
I'm confused. Are we talking about clothing, or sour cream? Or forgotten food in the back of the fridge??

Shoes should be replaced regularly because your feet need the proper support, which wears down over time.

Clothes, however - if they are in good condition and still fit, continue to wear them! If they are in poor condition or in need of repair, repair them or relegate them to cleaning/painting clothes. You can upcycle old clothes into other things you can use. You can swap with your friends. You can shave pilling off your sweaters to make them look better.

I literally own a Montreal 1976 souvenir sweater that's in lovely condition - to be fair it's acrylic and for many years was stored carefully in a bag. But clothes are STILL. GOOD.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7BdnsB4RTcU
From about 9:20 to ~15:00 Bernadette Banner does a great job of explaining how practical older clothes are and what purpose they serve that modern, mass-produced clothing doesn't really do for us anymore.

Like if my kid gets a PS6 for his birthday, is there an understanding that it's his to do what he wants with it? Or does it get added to all of my systems as well as one big shared family game room?

Might be wise to introduce household gifts [consoles] in addition to individual gifts. That way, their games can be theirs and the console itself can belong to the family. This is, of course, open to negotiation once college/moving out enters the mix.

You don't wanna have to revisit 'this is ____'s PS6' when/if you have additional children, or if you want to use it yourself. As a 90s kid, I compare it to the VHS player - that was understood to belong to the family, for the family's use. Each individual negotiated time on it, or we all watched together. Certain tapes were mine, certain tapes were my parents', and those that weren't super family friendly were stored elsewhere. Like, The Hunt for Red October wasn't right next to Disney's Aladdin.

There are good resources online for this in case you want to and aren't sure where to start, including joincake and getyourshittogether. Caitlin Doughty/Ask a Mortician on YouTube has a whole series of end of life planning videos where you can pick up info/satisfy morbid curiosities in a more-entertaining-than-it-has-any-right-to-be format.

I will admit that I don't have this together but am planning to by the end of next year. I find that Americans in particular are not comfortable with talking about/dealing with death, and that leaves you up a creek when you have to deal with it. You do not want to face that learning curve while on grief brain, so get into it sooner rather than later. Set yourself a concrete deadline [pardon the pun!].

I love films!! Watching something 20x is quite a lot for me, though. #1 I have watched probably 10x at this point, the others are in an indeterminate 'more than once but less than 10x' category.

  1. Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust [2000] - incredible animation and cinematography
  2. Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow [2004] - retro zeerust feel and unexpectedly big ticket stars like Jude Law, Gwyneth Paltrow, Angelina Jolie and a posthumous cameo of Sir Laurence Olivier
  3. The Iron Giant [1999] - funny and heartwarming
  4. Kate & Leopold [2001] - my fave modern rom-com
  5. Roman Holiday [1953] - my fave film
  6. Disney animated films insert - Aladdin [1992], Little Mermaid [1989], Hunchback of Notre Dame [1996] and Atlantis: The Lost Empire [2001] top the list here
  7. Other animated films insert - Anastasia [1997], Prince of Egypt [1998], Fievel Goes West [1991], FernGully: The Last Rainforest [1992] some of these were watched more than Disney but not all
  8. The Sound of Music [1965] - family fave
  9. Ben-Hur [1959] - papa's fave film
  10. Remember the Titans [2000] - mama was watching this every time I turned around when I was in high school idk
  11. Seasons of the Heart [1993] - a direct-to-video 19th century drama about a couple who adopts a little boy. Stand in for several similar family friendly Christian films from when I was growing up.
I saw Bohemian Rhapsody a couple of times at the cinema, but only because I was going with different people. Can't recall going out to see anything else multiple times.
