Leveling up the squadron members is time-gated since you have to do dispatch missions so yeah, might as well get started on that in advance.

It definitely does not look "cheap" but I think I see what you mean? My first thought is that it has something to do with the frame rate. I can't tell if it's a higher frame rate than normal (I think it might be) but I can tell you it's absolutely going to be smoother and feel less dynamic and sharp than animation.

I think they did a pretty good job, but it is a little too smooth now that I notice it.

I think this game has some great concepts and awful execution. Love the characters, the story beats are there but just occur, resulting in a supremely weird vibe. I'm actually kind of into that vibe, it's just some bros hanging out on a road trip while events occur around them off-screen, but it feels unintentional. I never played the DLC though which might be enough to bump it up a point or so but I just never felt it was worth my time.

Great to see and the blog post XSEED posted about the process is really fascinating. It's basically happening because they asked about it during localization and came up with a workflow for it. There was a lot of work that had to go into it to get this done. Based as hell.

I honestly don't understand Texas's obsession with horse cops. Well, aside from the obvious intimidation tactics and cowboy aesthetic. We've got a bunch in the city and (like a lot of police equipment) they seem unnecessary. CBP at least has some kind of justification for terrain mobility but like...come on. We're talking about migrants and refugees here, this is a textbook problem policing is not a solution to even without being on a horse.

Also a day later and I'm still not over that Tulsi post where she's complaining that human rights violations are happening because the border isn't restrictive enough. I honestly wish I could get into Trilogy because there's a lot of great stuff on there, but it all runs together in my mind. I guess I should try listening to each mixtape individually and not as a triple album because oh man does my brain hate that. I think the only other competitor is Copperbell Mines which has extremely obnoxious mechanics on top of being boring but at least it's trying something...? All 3 of the tutorial dungeons I have literally fallen asleep while running them, but I can give them a pass because they're tutorials. Toto-Rak has no excuse and I do feel like it's more frequent.

I love the first game as as experience but I'm not sure I'm willing to sit down and play it all over again, especially with the sheer amount of new games coming out. I think it'll depend on if the new content is worth it and/or if there is a NG+.

Darkhold is waaaaay worse.

The second boss there used to not have AOE indicators (this was just the mechanic for how cyclopses worked) and would occasionally destroy newbie groups. Plus, while it's very little of an issue while synced down, people frequently run it undergeared which makes it MUCH worse for the tank and healer.

Right, and I'll say I point this out not to give credibility to the theory because information turns out to be wrong all the time, but mostly to point out we DO have semi-official support for it. I mean, it was openly the US's stance at one point, when we accused Cuba of using sonic weaponry over it, and we know enough to know that there's still leftover support for that as it's being investigated, being treated basically as fact even though the facts are up in the air. And it's precisely that with the lack of evidence that makes it so memeable.

As far as conspiracy theories go this would be a pretty harmless one EXCEPT it's a shadow policy accepted by some circles in the government and you can actually see it affect policy and foreign relations. At that point what is even left to do but joke about how absurd the entire situation is?

I mean there are plenty of sources claiming that "foreign attack" is the unofficial stance of the US government on this even though they publicly deny it, and a handful of scientific experts and papers published as recently as last year supporting the microwave theory. There's a lot of legitimate, but conflicting information! So I would get calling the skeptics conspiracy theorists if one were to believe the scattered support for the microwave weapon, but it's the both-sidesing here that's baffling me.

Your take on Isolation is interesting to me because I love that album but I consider it to be quintessentially good modern pop. A wide variety of styles and influence, executed at a high level, but ultimately still pretty straightforward! Glad you could at least enjoy some of it, though!

I played the original for the first time two months ago, RIGHT before they announced the Remaster, lmao. Cool stuff but it honestly could use an overhaul. Remedy has come a LONG way with both character animations and gameplay, both of which were pretty dated.

It had all the original licensed music too, I think, though. Space Oddity for the credits and all that. I might have had an old version from before they pulled it from stores, but I also think they put it back up with the old songs. Hopefully those Epic bux continue to pay off.

It's nothing groundbreaking or particularly unique but I've always enjoyed how it takes every cliche JRPG trope it can get its hands on and manages to spin that into something that taken as a whole is really fun. It comes out to be more than the sum of its parts. It's cheesy as hell but it knows what it wants to be. And as mention, the strong cast goes a long way.

Yeah I realized too late that 100 gecs is not "pop music for people who do not like pop music" which is more in line with what was being requested. With the Knower example given I could not tell you what about them would have been appealing on that angle because as someone who does like pop music, they just sound like well-executed indietronica to me. Though, now I understand the parallels and divergences - both have similar EDM influence and use random drops for example but they use them in the exact opposite ways (Knower more seamlessly incorporates them, gecs makes them MORE jarringly abrasive).

That's fine though, people love or hate gecs for a lot of different reasons so I think it served its role as a useful barometer.

Rap is a genre I generally dislike, but I didn't warn the topic not to nominate it because I can usually at least tolerate it, and there's probably some of it out there that'd I'd be a fan of. This ain't it. Even my headphones killed themselves 30 seconds into the first song!

To be fair this wouldn't have stopped me because overall it's a pop album and outside of Money Machine I barely register it as purely rap. Honestly I nominated 1000 gecs purely because of your comment about not being receptive to modern pop unless it's doing wild shit, and gecs is the current poster child for that. There is not much in the way of a complex narrative to Earthbound but it is telling a story about a journey. And it's one hell of a great journey. I'm not gonna come in here and declare Earthbound to be the "Odyssey" of video games but it is in a similar vein of storytelling and it mostly kills it. Some parts of that journey do drag, and that's the only thing stopping it from perfection.

Yep! I would never cut this sequence from the game, the cruise ship segment absolutely slaps, but there is zero narrative reason for it. It's the poster child for this for sure.

It still applies to other stuff like the airplane and wandering through the desert too. In these cases it's just really cool vignettes but they disrupt the narrative so much that you really have to stretch your suspension of disbelief when the story contorts itself to get it back on track. I'm more than willing to suspend disbelief in most stories but this pushes it.

Tangentially related, I don't remember why you have to go to the spider mansion but I assume it's to find a macguffin. That's usually what I expect from these games But even that felt really disjointed. Still, I remember the part with the spiders!

That's happened to me a few times and we just laughed it off and ran back. You can time it so that you trigger the animation while Returning but it's also easy to mess up if you're early. It's not like, a designated roles "job" or anything so pretty dumb that someone would get upset at a specific person over it.

I can confess to being overly glib too often in this topic.

I get that, I just take issue with the idea that this outrage is unwarranted or misdirected. Because I think a lot of the problem and why we are here is that people are not outraged enough, even over relatively niche things. People can be mad at everything all the time if they want, but it's hard to focus that energy.

I guess for my perspective on this specific situation, Roe v Wade is held up as this protective bulwark on a national level when it doesn't really accomplish that. Texas has been sabotaging abortion for years by doing things like redirecting money from Planned Parenthood to shitty Christian "clinics" that literally embezzle the money and fail (so, the state bullying a healthcare service out of business). I live here so I keep up on news about it, but I feel like it goes unnoticed on a national level. There are similar strategies going on all over the south that are technically legal under RvW (at least according to the court system, which...well.). And in terms of Democratic leadership, the "strategy" was always to talk about protecting Roe which was never going to be good enough. But a lot of the obstacles making this happen at a practical, local level go unnoticed nationally until Roe v Wade is invoked. Much like other issues, there is no drama or spectacle to latch onto until that happens. Hell, even this ludicrous law was flying WAY under the radar until the SC weighed in.

So I understand the cynicism around the news media outrage cycle, but this one is past due. Laws are fake, and the Supreme Court has gone mask off and confirmed that in the middle of the night. Abortion rights aren't exactly my biggest active concern either but...there's a lot to be mad about here and if people are coming around then good.

There is a lot of great moment-to-moment writing, interesting backstory, and setup that completely fails to come together in a cohesive way. The potential of having villains tied to the characters is completely squandered. I think the final act is the only part of the plot that is actively bad, but a lot of other parts arent good. More than any other Uncharted game, UC3's storyline is an excuse to shuffle you from setpiece to setpiece, but UC3 has SO MANY totally ridiculous setpieces (that are admittedly some of the best in the series) that they fail to come up with coherent connective tissue.

Psychonauts 1 likely still holds up and might as well get in on that while it's the hot thing. It's probably preferable to go into 2 with some background anyways.

I would have said Yakuza 0 in a vacuum but it's a much bigger commitment so it's the runner-up. Not even talking about the rabbit hole that is the series, but each individual game is also pretty huge.

If you're comfortable progging extremes at release, the first two floors of any given Savage tier aren't much harder. Typically the first floor is about as complex as an EX just with a higher DPS check and one harder mechanic. Second floor will increase that slightly but occasionally they will push one mechanic too far (hello E2S final phase and E10S towers). Still, you don't even typically need a static to do them and pugs can clear them on release just fine. Things don't get truly wild until the 3rd or 4th floors.

I think Savage raiding has a more intimidating reputation than it actually deserves because it USED to be that way in 3.0-3.3 era, but ever since Stormblood they have done a really good job of easing people into it with the difficulty and have also streamlined the game in numerous other ways.
