Yeah, it's quite depressing. But fuck me, I've become cynical enough over the past few years to the point where I've started thinking that's the only option. It's hard to pushback against grievance politics from the right. But they'll keep doing that shit regardless of how much people talk about race issues
Yes, I'm sure the problem would have been solved by now if not for all the meddling folks like MLK and Malcolm X and Huey Newton got up to.

Yeah, the Lions are really bad. They have been perpetual also-rans for the better part of six decades. The last time they so much as sniffed a Championship was in 92 when they got absolutely clowned by Washington, which easily beat my Bills in the Super Bowl.
They broke perhaps the best RB ever in Barry Sanders and one of the greatest WRs: Calvin Megatron Johnson. They just traded their long-running franchise QB Matt Stafford to the Rams for future picks and QB Jared Goff(who is truly wretched) because both Stafford and the Lions agreed that the Lions would likely not be competitive in what remained of his career. Stafford is balling out like never before in a offense better than any the Lions could have ever built, while the Lions are popping open the champagne because they tied the Steelers.

It's always been incredible to me how so many people just don't care about themselves or others. Throughout this pandemic. It makes me awfully pessimistic about the future of this country.

In any case, I got a flu shot for the first time and I've already got my booster(Connecticut is letting grocery store workers participate in the first wave this time, which they should've have done in the first place because I got texts about some one new getting COVID goddamned constantly last year! It was terrifying).
Even here, in liberal ass CT, lots of people just don't bother wearing masks inside. It's sad and discouraging. But then, even our elected leaders seem to be of the mind that this will all be over if we just believe hard enough that things are back to normal.

And don't be a hero, TC. Heroism is supposed to be a temporary thing, not a permanent gig.

TopicSo what does CE think about colonizing mars?
ElatedVenusaur
11/12/21 11:19:53 PM
#6
It's completely impractical for the foreseeable future. To maintain a colony on such an inhospitable planet would be an extremely difficult undertaking requiring our most advanced tech and a constant flow of supplies going from Earth to Mars. The supply chain would be of irregular length: it would be especially dangerous if a problem arose when Mars was furthest away and supplies(and help) would take the longest to get there. Like, you need to shield the colonists from radiation, keep them supplied with oxygen, food, tools, construction materials, etc. etc. And you have to somehow keep all that dust from mucking everything up. Just spitballing off the top of my head.

A moon colony would be easier, but only because the supply chain is shorter. It would still be near impossible at best with current tech and capabilities.

In both cases, the much weaker gravity would make returning to Earth difficult for colonists(if it's possible for them to adjust back to Earth gravity at all), and the long-term effects on a human body from living with such weak gravity aren't really known at all, but they're probably bad!

ElatedVenusaur

RustyFerret posted...
Because Jesus loves the poor and downtrodden.

In pagan Rome, the poor were looked at with scorn and assumed that they had angered the gods somehow and deserved to be in that state.
Yeah, OG Christianity was explicitly a Messianic reaction to the occupation of and (relative) impoverishment of Israel and Judah(Palestine). Jesus' followers were primarily the dregs of society: workmen like farmers and fishermen, tax collectors(they were 1000% worse back then), prostitutes, etc. It protested Roman oppression as well as the complicity of the Jewish elites, particularly the clergy. Jesus literally tells a rich man that he must abandon his possessions to follow him("it is easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle than it is for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God" and no, that wasn't a metaphor), he tells his apostles the old woman throwing her last copper into the collection plate is vastly more generous and worthy than the rich man throwing in multiple gold coins, and is enraged by the presence of money lenders in/around a temple.
Jesus basically went around telling the oppressed and downtrodden that they were the best people and that the elites sucked, which is how he wound up on a cross. Perhaps he even suggested that something should be done about it in the here and now....

It wasn't until Constantine that the religion became co-opted into a means of social and political control, and even then, it did put increased moral constraints on rulers, particularly in Western Europe where the Church was influential and independent.

Yeah, the Pacific theater was barely touched upon, in my experience.
No mention made of us mistranslating their response to our solicitation of surrender, no discussion of the extensive fire bombing campaigns we launched against Japanese civilians, no recognition that they barely had time to wrap their heads around Hiroshima before we dropped the second one on Nagasaki, and not really much reference to the role the Soviets breaking their non-aggression pact and invading Manchuria had.
Just rote parroting of Japanese nationalist rhetoric about total communal resistance that doesn't pass the smell test.

I do remember reading Sadoko and the Thousand Paper Cranes in 4th-grade. And my China and the Pacific Rim class(which the teacher made Japanese history. good move: too broad a focus for a high school class) incorporated the Japanese film Barefoot Gen, about the bombings. Literally better encapsulation of the horrors of the atomic bombings than anything else I encountered.
