Yeah, probably the actual tally of COVID deaths is significantly higher. Lots of people died real quick early on before they even got a grip on the situation.
Way too many people have died and continue to die because we just refuse to take this thing seriously, as a society. And our government response has always been geared more towards protecting the economy than saving lives.

Yeah thanks for taking the time to say that. I know I need to exercise but just feeling so shitty really makes me feel stuck here like i have no choice but to do nothing. And I really can't talk about this with a therapist. My social anxiety is too strong. It would be easier to repeatedly hit myself with a hammer.

Im already aware im not cis, but im not sure if im trans though either. Im somewhere in the nonbinary range and idk if hormones are the right idea.
Look: only you know the right path for you. But you have to trust yourself to know the way and tread the path. And I know thats hard! And its okay if you dont start tomorrow. Its never too late.

Top 5 games?
Ever? Or now? Geez. That's really hard. I'll pick five I really loved, how about? Probably not literally the five best.
Shadowrun: Dragonfall - It just has such a fantastic atmosphere, and I feel like it has the best story of the three, easily. And I kind of feel like your party in Hong Kong(which is great too, BTW) is just a little *too* good for what's supposed to be a bunch of randos. It manages to construct a really compelling mystery and the ending(s) are great. I love that you have multiple decision points with real consequences: what to do with APEX, do you side with Vauclair or manage to talk him down, do you spare Feurschwinge or kill her, what did you prioritize on Glory's mission, basically.

Transistor - The ending is a bit of a bummer, but I love it to bits regardless. Just brilliantly conceived.

Life Is Strange - The game that taught me how I would actually handle the trolley problem and made me sweat through several decisions.
But not the last one! Bae before Bay, sorry not sorry MaxxChloe forever.

Europa Universalis IV - Goddamn do I love this game, even if it's a bit bloated from being continuously added to for almost a decade. Kind of getting to be time to put it in the old regeneration chamber, but I've played it more than probably anything else.

Sonic Mania - Goddamn Sonic Mania is amazing and has all these little touches. Incredible work by the entire team. My favorite bit is probably the little vignette that plays before the Knuckles-exclusive boss of Lava Reef Zone 2.
The Heavy King is stealing the Master Emerald. You see a little cartoon thought bubble pop up from Knuckles, roughly depicting what happened to him in Sonic&Knuckles when Eggman stole it. He grits his teeth, shakes his fist, and settles on a different and ultimately successful method of stopping the heist.

Well it sounds better than nothing. But I live in a small rural area hours away from anywhere that I think would have anyone like that. Plus talking about that with anyone irl sounds way too scary.

Plus the being fat thing makes me not want to try yet, ive heard losing weight gets a lot harder.

Plus I don't think I actually have gender dysphoria really. Or maybe idk. I never feel like im depressed about my gender really. I just don't want to be alone and also think lesbians are cute and awesome and make me really jealous of how cute and nice their relationships can be.
I mean...it sounds like you need to lose weight, and exercise is insanely good for you. It'll even make you feel better mentally. I do think you should see a therapist, and remember: cis dudes don't want to be lesbians. They might wish they could be with a lesbian, but they don't want to be a lesbian. Transition is not just about minimizing gender dysphoria, but about maximizing gender euphoria.

Real talk: are you going to a therapist? If you feel you need help with possible transness, you should specifically seek out a therapist who services primarily or even exclusively trans clients. It requires a bit of a specialized skill set.
I lucked out with mine: not only does he work only with trans people, hes a trans masc himself! And altogether great.
Of course, if you feel like cutting to the chase, you can always seek out a clinic which serves trans people with an informed consent model. Theyll sit you down with a doctor who will, in excruciating detail, describe everything HRT does and does not do and then let you decide. You can leave with a prescription for a starter dose that same day. Youll feel better/worse pretty much immediately.

Do you feel like it will be hard to get/hold a job as you progress through your transition? Do you have any issues with discrimination now?
I'm studying to be a social worker, so if there's any field where that will be less of an issue, it would be that. I currently work at Whole Foods, which actually is decent towards LGBTQ+ people. I have a number of gay and lesbian coworkers as well as two gay transmen(they're a couple and they're cute). I actually came out to my assistant department manager Sunday night, and the first thing she asked was if I needed a new name tag with my true name and pronouns. I'm not quite ready to be publicly out yet though, but I wanted to let her know so she could game plan. She's a trustworthy, competent, and all-around good person, and two of my friends who also know her agreed with that assessment(and she smiled ear-to-ear when I told her that).

I haven't read a ton of philosophy, honestly. So I can't say, but something that's stuck with me and helped me through the process of transition is a Confucius quote. "To move a mountain, begin by carrying away small stones." With regards to transition, I'm not going to reach my goals overnight, but little by little. One day, I'll wake up and realize I actually moved the entire damned mountain, but it won't be tomorrow.
And I remember that because it was the tech quote for Mining in Civ IV and Leonard Nimoy's voice is both memorable and the kind of thing you *want* to remember, you know? I really did read the Analects though. Like 15 years ago. I should reread it.

Totally separate. We're hardwired with a gender identity and most of us seek to adhere to it, to "perform" it, if you will. Some of us are mushier and don't/can't conform to societal expectations of our gender, but still identify as that gender. Society's expectations are simply vastly narrower than the true range of expressions.

MC_BatCommander posted... Read any good books lately?
The books I've read for my Psychology of Addiction class so far are engaging, but probably not something most would pick up for light reading.
The highlights of this past summer's reading were:

-Ursula K. LeGuin's Earth Sea Trilogies. Got a massive hard-cover with all six of them, with forewords and end notes written by her where she talks about writing them and where her ideas came from. Also includes some never-before-published material set in Earthsea, a brief section on the history of Earthsea, stuff like that. It was great. She wrote very beautifully and purposefully.

-Fyodor Dostoevsky's Crime and Punishment. It's about a poor, starving student trying to get away with and justifying an unjustifiable crime, and the crazy stuff he suffers through. Also, after having read The Idiot and The Brothers Karamazov, I was shocked to encounter a happy ending! He could write those well too.

-I didn't finish it, but Dr. Chanda Prescod-Weinstein's book The Disordered Cosmos was a fascinating read. She talks a lot about physics, what she does, and why she loves physics. Also, she talks about why it's hard being the only black Jewish lady physicist and all the stuff she's put up with and obstacles she's overcome to get where she is today. Really well-written. It's at the top of my list once I finish the semester.

I'm not here to educate people on the basics of gender and sexuality. You can find plenty of excellent trans perspectives, some which delve into psychology and/or sociology, online. Suffice to say, I'm learning to give up caring about what our transphobic society thinks about me and my body.
Apropos: https://gompynan.storenvy.com/products/19963373-i-dont-want-to-look-or-be-cis-t-shirt

But speaking of my body, my GP/endo is great. I asked her what a good goal weight would be, given that I'm 5'11 and becoming a woman, and she says between 170-175. Then she paused and goes, "But <true name>, don't worry too much about it. You're 5'11! That's supermodel height! Lots of women would kill to be as tall as you."

Beats me. We don't even know why there are trans people to begin with, so far as I know. I mean, there are theories, and we know the body and brain develop separately: they're supposed to go the same way, of course, but sometimes they don't. Sometimes the body develops incorrectly, sometimes the body fails to map cleanly to male or female at all! Sometimes parts of it are male and others are female. But, personally, I think it has a lot to do with the fact that male and female are actually way closer together than we often realize.

Why do you like Courtney Barnett so much? :P
She's a talented musician with a sound I really dig, for starters. But she also seems like a genuinely thoughtful and compassionate person, and it comes out in her actions. Like, for example, on her MTV Unplugged, she performed her really explicitly feminist song, "Nameless, Faceless" with Evelyn Ida Morris, who is non-binary, and the version performed is reworked to be a true duet that incorporates them both. And, earlier this year, she did a livestream concert and opened it with a blessing from an Aboriginal elder, who was given time and space to talk a bit about his people and their history. As a White American(i.e. some one who hardly knows about the history of the indigineous people of *this* country), I found that fascinating. As a firm believer in social justice, it's nice to see some of it in action.

What are some of the best moments of gender euphoria you've had?
Almost missed this one, which is a shame, because it's great. A non-exhaustive list:

-When I visited my trans friend out in Oregon over the summer, I painted my fingernails for the very first time. A pretty blue-green shade. I couldn't stop looking at them, and it was a little painful removing it before I left. Also I got to go to pride with them, which was overwhelming but beautiful. Painted nails, mustache(RIP), she/her sticker, and no one batted an eye. So painting my fingernails is probably one of the very first things I'll do when I'm out-out

-When I searched "trans voice lessons" and found this woman(this wasn't the literal first video I clicked, but I did watch it the next day, and it's more illustrative): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2txYhkmhVts&t=65s
I cried tears of pure joy. I never dreamed such a thing was possible. Obviously, it's not an easy or fast thing, but I could literally sound like a cis girl with enough work and dedication.

-Oh yeah, I cry. Not often. I'm crusty like my sister. But I straight-up couldn't cry before. Not just because of toxic social conditioning, but also because I had to numb myself to survive. Being able to feel so fully and richly is great.

-Two months into HRT, I was putting a bag bundle on a cart to bring out to the front, and my grip slipped and it slammed into my chest. It happens. Except that time I felt twin shooting pains in my chest, yelped, and dropped the bundle. That was when I became aware of that development had started.

-I finally shaved my chest yesterday. I legit have boobs. They're tiny, but they're there and there's a lot of good growing to be done. Weird having bags of sand on your chest though, let me tell you :p

Really, if you want to be a girl/boy/both/neither, you can literally just do it. They can't stop you. It's never too late to live your truth.

Yeah, I brought my cat Louis to the vet for the last time. He was 15 at the time, and had been sick for a while: he struggled to keep food down and was rapidly deteriorating. My sister came to help me. I remember just before we left, he was walking around and soundly stopped, crouched down, and cried out, like he was in pain. I just pet him and told him it would be ok. Me and my sister didn't even have to try and collect him: he went right over to her when she came in, and we slipped him into the carrier without incident. I drove him.
The vet was concerned, examined him, and took him for a x-ray. They found a bunch of fluid in his chest, tapped that, gave him oxygen, and found a mass in his abdomen. She stopped, and then very quietly broached putting him to sleep, since he was already so ill he wouldn't make it. I knew that was coming, but it still hurt.
They had a side-room for it. We got to visit with him a for a bit before. He was feeling good from getting the fluid drained and get some oxygen. He was very curious and happy to see us. When it was time, the vet and a tech came in. Louis didn't struggle. We pet him and told him we loved him the entire time. He left peacefully. We were allowed to stay as long as we needed to collect ourselves, but the drive home was rough, not going to lie.
But it's our duty to our pets to care for them, and when we can't do that, when we can no longer take away their suffering and their quality of life is poor, we owe it to them give them a swift, painless end to it. I would do it again if I had to.

A bit off-topic, but typing that last part made me cry. Messy cry! I didn't cry at the time: my tears now are a blessing of my transition.

That ain't gonna help on its own. A lot of female execs might turn a blind eye to this shit too.
Yeah, a woman isn't necessarily going to be more sympathetic to this kind of thing. You climb the corporate ladder by greasing the right palms and covering the right asses, basically. A woman might even have to work harder at doing so to rise up the ranks!

There's no labor shortage. Millions of people have quit jobs. They are simply not returning to work.
Not all of them aren't returning: some just landed better jobs. Many people can't return due to so-called long COVID.
And, of course, all this mass death that we did/are doing barely anything to prevent serves only to exacerbate the problem: both by creating job openings and making these garbage jobs waaaaay less desirable.
Combine that with supply chain disruptions caused in part due to capitalism's "just in time" ethos and the attitude that contingencies are just fat to cut off and give to shareholders, a near total lack of investment in key infrastructure(which will continue) for decades, the increasing intrusiveness and demanding nature of corporate culture and work, and decades of coddling the very worst managers and customers at the expense of workers...

Well, it's no wonder everything's gone to hell.

They should have remixed the music to be Beatles tunes.
Actually, all the music is 8-bit renditions of Beatles songs, as I understand it.

My absolute favorite novel is probably Dostoevskys The Idiot but Ive read three and theyre all great (The Brothers Karamazov and Crime and Punishment , respectively).

Historical stuff, I really dug The Sleepwalkers: How Europe Went to War in 1914 , The Vanquished: Why the First World War Failed to End , Ghost on the Throne (about the death of Alexander and the ensuing wars for his empire) and War of the Three Gods about the cataclysmic war fought between the Eastern Roman and Sassanid Empires and how the rise of Islam was enabled by both empires essentially having bled themselves white immediately prior.

For biographies: Karl Marx: A Life and John Brown: Abolitionist are both excellent reads about divisive but hugely important and influential figures.

Make Mario a trans man, Luigi a trans woman, and Peach a black non-binary person.
Bowser is cis but enjoys performing in drag shows as Bowsette.

That's, uh, super disingenuous.

I'm sorry, did Vice President Harris not criticize President Biden for opposing federally-mandated busing to combat segregation, then not say she doesn't support federally-mandated busing and not produce some word salad about how it was necessary then but not now, essentially ruining her own point?

FYI: https://www.epi.org/publication/schools-are-still-segregated -and-black-children-are-paying- a-price/
Segregation is practically as big a problem now as it was in the '60s and '70s!
You'll have to fix the linebreaks because this website is garbage.

Very. The 2nd Republic is insanely dysfunctional, undemocratic, and straight-up dying. And there's really not much organized leftist anything: all the organization and momentum exists on the right. And if the fascists seize power, even if they ultimately fail to hold onto for very long, it's going to be extremely ugly.
Of course, the medium case is basically the Republic shambling along as is, with the Dems occasionally winning control of the presidency and House but increasingly seldomly the Senate as Miami sinks beneath the waves, the West burns, and we're regularly going deep into the Greek alphabet to name hurricanes and nothing except executive action and defense spending happens.

I think part of the problem is that KHive types and quite likely Vice President Harris herself expected and anticipated that she was going to be groomed to succeed Biden as soon as 2024, and she would have a policy portfolio and stuff to do.

But there was never any reason to expect any of that and the Biden administration just plain doesnt do much anyway. Worse, Harris has managed to flub what few choreographed appearances she has made, which is on her and her staff.

I mean, she basically rocketed up the ranks and many in the party establishment were eager to anoint her the next great thing, a sort of fusion of all the best qualities of Obama and Hillary Clinton.
But it turns out that the establishment is terrible at cultivating people who aren't transparently rank careerists and Harris in particular has negative charisma and surrounded herself with ex-Clinton flunkies. She's now under the thumb of a dude with a troubled past in regards to women and black people who is also famous for valuing familiarity and loyalty over all else.
The same dude she correctly skewered for opposing desegregation which was a genuinely great line that she immediately sabotaged by saying she basically agreed with him lol.
