iirc the writers actually had to retcon this, the explanation is something like Lahabrea is more than a little insane because he hops between bodies so frequently whereas Emet is remarkably lucid after all this time because he spends so much time in one body (or copies of that one body? I forget exactly).
Makes sense. I was still rolling my eyes a bit when Lahabrea was described as a 'great thinker' in Amaurot.

I'm leveling Summoner now and the 1-60 quests involve an Ascian and he is an absolute caricature of a villain. Really glad they fixed the issue of the main villain group coming across as completely one-dimensional, because that was the biggest issue with the writing so far.

Who would you say is the worst character?
I don't think FF14 has any outright bad characters. Even the ones with writing issues have something to offer.

Spoilers for everything up until 5.0:

The closest to 'bad characters' would be the Ascians in ARR/Heavensward, who are slightly below the standard set by Saturday morning cartoon villains. It's hilarious how much of a goober Lahabrea is in comparison to Emet-Selch.

Outside of them, Ran'jit is the closest I can think of. He's basically Shadowbringers' version of Zenos (who was already questionable) except worse, and he really stands out considering how good Shadowbringers is at writing...everyone else, really. They had a potentially interesting motivation with him being traumatized by the repeated deaths of the Minfillias he had to raise, but they don't explore it enough. His power scaling also varies wildly according to what the plot demands - he went from beating five named characters including the WoL in his intro, to being soloed by Thancred in a fair fight. Even with all that, though, he has a good design and a good voice and Thancred getting his big hero moment was actually pretty great so hey.

People seem to have problems with Atsuhi and Yotsuyu and I'm not sure why. Atsuhi is a loathsome shitheel, which is fine. He's supposed to be an Algus/Joffrey type character and he does it well. Yotsuyu is also a loathsome fuckup but again that's fine - her story acts as a nice foil to Fordola's. Both are given second chances, and one of them is able to reinvent themselves while the other fails to move past their childhood trauma (partially because Yotsuyu's was WAY WORSE) and pays the price as a result.

I hate Shulk's XB2 model. Takes the couple issues I have with the XBDE model and amplifies them. Ultimate's is really junky too for some reason. Which is weird as Smash 4 is probably the best overall Shulk model.

Prison Island is a fantastic sequence that gets even better on a replay.

I'm still in the early goings so maybe things will change, but if a big plot point here is to get me to feel bad about Fordola, it's uhhhhhh....not gonna work. I'm siding with the mob here.
I don't think it was a scene meant to make you 'side' with anyone, really. Just giving you more perspective so you can understand her lot in life better. Whether or not that naturally leads into sympathy is up to each individual player.

OK SO
It's my personal pet theory that they diverted budget to the third Ivalice raid. There's so much love and care (and visuals) put into it that it makes the Stormblood extra trials and 8-man raids look paltry by comparison. In terms of aesthetic, mechanics, and just plain hype factor, Orlandu and Ultima are absolutely top class, and the two fights before them are no slouches either.

Supporting my theory is that literally every major head of the development team is a massive, self-professed FFT fanboy/girl.

The old Xenoblade had a better art style - from the comparison picture you can tell that color tone of the original is darker and less 'anime smooth'. I definitely prefer the original in this regard, although the Mechon in DE look really good.

The quality of the faces is mixed - I think the only one that gets a clear upgrade is Melia. Fiora's original face is iffy, but her DE face isn't very good either (her eyes are HUGE for some reason). Shulk is not only a downgrade but looks like an entirely different person at times. DE is the product I'd recommend to people for many, many reasons, but there was something a little something lost in the feel of the game in the transition from original to remake.

None of this is worth giving up how the environments look in upgraded HD, or the numerous gameplay improvements.

Yeah but he turns into what I assume is some FFXII thing!
Duma (what Argath transforms into) is one of the Lucavi named in FFT, although it doesn't make an appearance onscreen. It isn't mentioned at all in FF12.

The entire concept of the Lucavi - people transforming into monsters when using a magic stone - is tied significantly more to FFT than FF12. The FF12-only Espers are basically just cameos, and there's not very many of them.

Leveling Summoner now, up to Level 64. The AoE rotation is both fun and frustrating. If the mobs take a decent amount of time to die then you can rack up damage like nobody's business, but if they die quickly you do like 1/3 of your max potential. Really like the way it plays against bosses though.

That quick instant heal will save your life.

Ranged Physical DPS are generally considered the easiest role to play due to the freedom of movement you mentioned. They deal with mechanics more easily than any other role type. As a result, their optimal damage is a fair bit lower than the other DPS roles...which honestly barely matters in the grand scheme of things. In casual content, enrage timers (a.k.a. mechanics that kill everyone if a certain amount of damage isn't dealt in a specific period of time) are rare, and when they do pop up, are designed to be able to be cleared by people who aren't very good so that everyone who plays FF14 can see the story. In hardcore content, enrage timers become a much bigger deal, but harsh, party-wiping mechanics become an even bigger deal, and the flexibility of a Dancer or Machinist or Bard is reeeeally nice to have in any team comp, cause you can't deal damage when you're dead.

Stealing this from the Politics board:

New study looks at the demographics of those who stormed the U.S. Capitol

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ubNwct0nO4U

Just so everyone doesn't have to watch a video, this is an article written by the same person:

https://www.theatlantic.com/ideas/archive/2021/02/the-capitol-rioters-arent-like-other-extremists/617895/

I also took the liberty of watching the video. Pape analyzed the 244 people who have been arrested and found that:

-2/3 of the individuals arrested were over the age of 34, compared to groups like the Proud Boys, where most of the group is made up of younger folks.
-Only 13% of the 244 were members of organized militant groups - 87% weren't - which means that we can't simply reduce this event to "organized militant group storms capitol"
-13% were business owners, 27% were from white-collar occupations (no overlap - the 2 are separately classified), and only 9% of them were unemployed.
-60% came from counties that Biden won.
-There's a critical failure of understanding of the political, economic, and social environment - our usual solution of "extremism ends when people get jobs" does not apply here since most of the rioters were gainfully employed and many of them were successful individual who actually had a lot to lose by doing this

Dark Knight storyline is in the top 1% of writing in the entire game, not just side quests. Conversely, when I was leveling White Mage, at one point I told my friend "all I've been doing is going around purifying the taint. Look, I'm going to talk to this guy, I bet he's going to say something unimportant then go tell me to purify more taint." He did.

My general class quest storyline ranking from what I've played so far would be:

Top:
Dark Knight

Great:
Rogue

Mostly Good:
Ninja, Machinist

Not Bad:
Red Mage, Pugilist, Samurai (50-60), Gunbreaker

Sub-Par:
Arcanist, Summoner, Marauder, Warrior, Lancer, Archer, Thaumaturge

Bad:
Samurai (60-70), Conjurer, White Mage

Healing is an entirely different ballgame, but tanking in non-Extreme/Savage content is basically just like playing a melee DPS while getting to ignore some mechanics. You could start tanking whenever and be fine.
