I love Froyo though. I don't see why you would put toppings on it, but whatever.

I knew the season 1 twist because it became a meme, but fuck me it was executed well. Ted Danson's evil laugh was incredible, and the fact that he just stands there and gloats at them as the entire facade crashes down - incredible.

But yeah. Eleanor and Chidi were such an incredible love story by the end of it, and it fucking killed me to see Chidi go. I'm a total sap, I like to believe in the power of love and finding such satisfaction in the comfort of another human being that you could stay in their presence and be content forever - but the fact is that despite his love for Eleanor and the weight of what they all accomplished... he was done. He found himself satisfied with everything he had accomplished, and all that was left for him was to go to the great beyond and become a part of the universe.

I mentioned in a thread not too long ago that I feel a pressure to not cry. Even when something is really sad and I want to cry, I've managed to harden myself to such a degree that I can hold it in.

I cried like a little bitch when Chidi went. I fucking wept.

I've been going through a similar sort of wringer TC, not on the same level as you've gone through and with a much quicker gestation cycle, but I can relate to what you're saying due to the relief giving way into shame and despondency.

In my case, I confided in a friend of mine about a girl I liked for about a year - I decided I was gonna pursue her in June of last year, and that's when I started confiding in my friend. I admitted how I felt, she let me down easy - all good, so I started working to put that all out of my mind.

I started getting a weird third wheel vibe, so one night when we were walking home from hers - our main friend group lives in the same house, so we're always going up to hang out - I tell him if there's something going on between them, I'd appreciate being told so I can distance myself and lessen any pain that it would out me through. He told me nothing was up.

A couple months pass, during which I confide in him about how hard it is getting over her. I go up after being sick, and his arm's around her shoulders and they're cuddling under a blanket. Internally, I start freaking out - I'd accepted that she'd re-entered the dating world, but the thought of her with my friend was like the one most painful scenario imaginable, and I began to go downhill. Eventually I confronted him about it - the way I phrased it was "I'm not going to be made to feel like a third wheel any more". And he told me that she made a move on him and he was pursuing it.

Initially, I was relieved to know that I wasn't losing my mind. I came to terms with what happened. But the next day, the depression and anger and feelings of betrayal kicked in - the way he phrased it had me making excuses for him doing something that fucking sucked and hurt me, and that's when it sunk in that I had confided in him about this girl for an entire fucking year before this happened. It fucking sucked. I'm still angry at him, because I wouldn't have done the same thing to him if I was in his shoes.

Not really comparable to leaving your abuser, I know. But when I found out the truth, I was able to process the reality of the situation and come to terms that it was happening. I was genuinely okay for the rest of that day - I had beers with another friend and played pool, and I felt like I was on top of things.

I spent the next week after that in bed. I didn't leave the house the entire time. I was upset and confused, I was angry, and I didn't know how to process how I felt. I at least appreciated that he had told me about it, but the next day I realised I had to confront him for him to tell me - so who knows how long this would have played out behind my back if I hadn't spoken up - and I realised that I had taken on this mindset of being the better person when I felt like I had been wronged. So why the fuck do I have to be the better person? Fuck them.

It was the worst week in recent memory, and frankly I'm surprised and eternally grateful that it was only a week. I've gone through the same process in the past, and it's taken months of feeling like that before I've gotten better.

I don't mean to equate our situations, or like make this all about me. But I wanted to let you know the thing that helped me get over this.

Fuck everyone else's feelings, especially the people who've made you feel this bad. You need to make time for yourself. You're hurt and upset and you might feel like you're sinking - so you need to do whatever it takes to take care of yourself and make yourself feel better. Be selfish - be upset, let people know you're in pain, spread yourself over as much support as you can whether it be your online communities or your IRL support structure.

And don't worry about being selfish - when you're in a place where you feel like you can stand on your own two feet, then you can worry about feeling selfish and you can consider paying people back for being there when you needed them. Until then, take what you need for you to feel better.

That's not to say "take an ice cream from a little boy and cut the ribbon to his balloon so it flies away if that'll make you happy" - don't take more than other people can offer. But when you're in a spiral of depression and anger and shame, don't feel bad for relying on others and taking what you need to get back to a place of normalcy. You need time for YOU.

D. I've always preferred easier game modes, and nowadays I tend to start on normal. If I really like a game, and it offers reasonable rewards, I'll play the harder modes for the sake of completion.

The last game I did that with was A Robot Named Fight. There were two limited run challenges: complete a run in 35 minutes, and complete a run with a 15% collection rate. I'm not a speedrunner, and my favorite part of metroidvanias is getting OP as fuck, so I really had to modify my playstyle to get those challenges done.

Like, the average run takes about 50+ minutes for me. Getting through the entire map and back up to the final boss in half an hour? Shit's fucked.

She has an actual personality unlike Rei at least.

Misato > Asuka > Rei
I feel like this misses the point of Rei's character. She's basically been engineered to have no personality, to be subservient to Gendo and NERV without fail and without question. She's only ever used as a tool, and as that's all she's ever known, she only knows how to behave like a tool - following orders, responding to requests without fail and with blinding diligence, and putting aside her own wellbeing for the sake of the mission.

She's infatuated with Gendo due to the incident where he burned his hands, sure, but when Shinji does the same thing for her and actually treats her with love and care rather than as a tool, it begins to deprogram her. He doesn't ask anything of her, he generally seems to want to know her better. And that's why her death, and her subsequent replacement, is so bad - because the Rei who dies is an emotionally complex person who finally has a lease on life and who understands how it feels to be included and cared for, only to be contaminated so thoroughly by an angel that the only way to save the day is to obliterate herself. The Rei at the start of the show would have done that without a second thought. The Rei who sacrifices herself in episode 18 has an intense monologue with the being trying to meld with her, and she starts crying when she realises what she'll have to do.

Asuka has her own sad backstory and arc, but she behaves like an asshole the entire time. Rei has nothing, and over the course of the show she gains something. I find her to be a more compelling character than Asuka ever was

I just booted up Yakuza 5 for the first time in ages, and the last time I played it was in 2019. That's insane.

The shitty fake dualshock controller I had to buy for my PS3 fucked up, the joysticks stopped flicking back into place so they just stayed stuck in one direction. Total fucking waste of money. The replacement I got was a $20 third party controller I got secondhand online, and the directional buttons were total garbage and just bled into each other. The d-pad was essentially useless.

I'm at a part of the game where you need the d-pad, so I just couldn't progress any further. But now I have a genuine dualshock 3 with standard d-pad controls, so I can continue.

Also the weirdest thing I've found out about Australia recently is that Burger King is called Hungry Jacks
This year is the 50th anniversary of Hungry Jack's, and I was sick around the time that the birthday happened so I was laid up on the couch watching morning shows. They had the guy on who brought the franchise to Australia - he was a Canadian entrepreneur who had already brought KFC to Australia, and his name is Jack.

I honestly think naming it Hungry Jack's down here has served as a boon. It suits the nation's spirit really well, like who has time for Burger King? Who made him the king of burgers, why is there a burger monarchy? Whereas a bloke named Hungry Jack seems very down to earth and relatable. Sounds like he knows his way around a burger, unlike that royal dipshit who sits on his throne all day.

And I never bothered asking why.
So I'm gonna ask now.
Why is this series so popular? What does it even play like? I know nothing about it other than that bread scene with the good good bread.
All of them except the new one (and a zombie shooter game that almost ended the series's localisation in the west) are 3D beat em ups with a ton of quirky side activities. You square up with thugs on the street, you go into a battle mode and you use the punch, kick and grab buttons to chain together combos. And then when you're done kicking ass, you can grab a beer at the bar and play pool, it you can go to the arcade and play the crane game. Later games added legit Sega arcade games too, like Virtual Fighter 2 and Outrun.

I'm usually not a fan of beat em ups, but this one is incredibly stylish and there's a real sense of openness and progression the further you get into each game.

Yakuza: Like A Dragon is the most recent game in the series, and it's a turn-based RPG. And apparently, it's the best Yakuza game in YEARS.

My take on it is that I'm disappointed if he's slept with fans, which I do believe he's done, but I think the document was stitched together in a way to make him look as bad as possible. There's an audio recording where the person getting the calls disguises their voice for privacy, but there's allegedly proof that the audio file has been edited more substantially than disguising the person's voice.

I heard rumblings of Vinny sleeping with fans back in January - the first wave of that coincided with a webcomic creator getting called out for abuse, so the first week of 2021 was really fucking stressful since I had to come to terms with two content creators I liked disappointing me. I still think it's feasible that Vinny slept with fans - legal fans, sure, but it's still not ethical and I'm still disappointed.

But the document dropped in March some time, and by then we had allegations that he badmouthed other content creators, gave one woman HPV and was very controlling. The first accuser made a big point over him name-dropping other creators and spun that into him badmouthing that, and the most vitriolic anti-Vinny people were making it out like Vinny knowingly gave a woman HPV because he was safe the first time and not the second time - though HPV is apparently hard to diagnose in men, so I think that's not a fair argument.

I can get the allegations to a point. What I heard in January? I think it's likely. But between January and March, more charges were added to this rap sheet, and I find it hard to stay invested in the entire scope of his cancelling when it went from "Vinny fucks his female fans" to "Vinny is a manipulator and a liar, and I think he knowingly infected me with HPV". Even if the woman who got HPV didn't say that, that's what it became.

A similar thing happened with Joel being transphobic in the past, which I think he was. I still think he's a bit conservative personally, but he keeps his personal views and his streamer persona more separated nowadays. He was making really shitty jokes for years, and at no point was it really brought up until enough evidence was there to take him down. That one rubbed me the wrong way because I like to think he might have apologized if confronted beforehand? But people waited, collected it all into one place and then used it to try and take him down.

The fact of the matter is that we don't know how much of this is true. We have some anonymous accusers with some manipulative rhetoric and some tenuous inferences, and we have the video game streamer who - in my eyes - has left some compelling evidence that he chats up his female fans to fuck them. His privacy has been violated, but if some of these charges are true, then it is condemnable and it is disappointing. Though for my money's worth, the only thing I'm convinced of is that he slept with female fans. Ethically, I think that's pretty disappointing, and I don't like or support that sort of behavior. But I can see myself moving past that and watching his streams again if that's the case - it's disappointing, but it's not a deal-breaker.

But until I know what's true and what isn't about the accusations, I don't think I can make that call. I hope Vinny's okay, but I won't be able to comfortably watch his streams until the accusations are confirmed or denied.

Elton John released an album called Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy in 1975. It was autobiographical in a way - it detailed the start of Elton John and Bernie Taupin's careers, and songs like Gotta Get A Meal Ticket go into their experiences with the music industry and the like. The album is known best for We All Fall In Love Sometimes and Someone Saved My Life Tonight.

The sequel came out in 2006, titled The Captain and the Kid. It picks up where the first album left off, and covers events from the three decades since - blowups, substance abuse, finding love. The entire second half of the album is bangers imo, though the first half is very hit and miss.

Late-career Elton John is an acquired taste, and it isn't for everyone - but I personally love his output from the early 90's through to this album. The songwriting and structure is different - much slower, arguably more simplified. But I genuinely love the sound of Songs from the West Coast and The Captain and The Kid, and while it's the song that took the longest to grow on me, Mansfield is probably the last great love song Elton John ever wrote - though I haven't heard beyond this album.

What are some other albums you can think of that have sequels?

TopicCars 3 was such a good movie, but the original endings were awful *big spoilers*
MrMallard
05/12/21 11:44:11 PM

So the way Cars 3 ended was that Lightning realises that he can't race as well as he used to, and he tags in the young upstart who's been managing him the entire time, coaching her to win the Piston Cup. It's a pretty solid passing-the-torch story, where the main character realises that he's getting older and he's not gonna be around forever, so he finds potential in the next generation and nurtures that potential. Basic, but sweet and well executed.

But Pixar were struggling with the ending, and it went through a few revisions. And some of these could have tanked the movie.

The first ending was that Lightning McQueen introduces Cruz as 95 at the start of the race. This ending is innocuous enough, with the writers realising that it would have wrapped Lightning's arc up too soon and the rest of the movie would have no stakes.

The second one had Lightning and Cruz racing each other, which would have split the audience as to who they wanted to root for.

The third one fleshes that idea out more, outright painting Cruz as a backstabber who took up the managerial role to learn Lightning's techniques and secrets. So rather than "you slow down when you get older, and we should look out for the younger folks as they come into their own", the message becomes "the younger generation will challenge you and take everything you have when you're at your lowest".

Philosophy about life after death is fine, and I like the thought of life after death, but I just don't think it's feasible. We're an ongoing chemical and electrical reaction occurring in the brain - once that reaction ceases, we stop existing.

"But who's to say?" - look, if the "self" or an individualistic "soul" is actually a metaphysical reality, then I'll be pleasantly surprised. I would prefer to go on once I'm dead. But I think it's much more likely that we're all just flukes on legs, given the one chance to live our lives, and that when we die the parts of us that used to perceive and feel and house the "self" becomes a piece of decomposing meat with none of its former function.

Once we die, we're gone forever. We're lost. And there will be no hallmark or space for us to reflect on that when it happens, because any trace of us stops existing the second we die. I don't think I'll ever be okay with that, but I have to come to terms with that. And it'll be in my mind as my friends and family age and die around me - because they're not going anywhere either.

Just rewatched it, and I wanted to give it another shot. Last bump for real this time, I promise
