If anything, George Floyd became a martyr. People didn't rally behind him because he was a great leader, or for anything he said or did. They rallied behind him because he died an unjust death in the streets at the hands of law enforcement, and his death - as senseless and unnecessary as it was - reflected a shared experience of brutality, corruption and lack of accountability that black people tend to have with the police.

He wasn't a hero, he was a man who was suffocated by the police over some funny money whose death could have been avoided with a more humane detainment technique. He was killed amidst pleas of not being able to breathe, and the man who killed him kept kneeling on him for minutes after he lost consciousness. And that made people furious - and rightfully so.

To ask if he was a hero is missing the point. He didn't do anything befitting of a hero except die a pointlessly cruel and unjust death that people rallied behind. He was just a guy who didn't deserve to be suffocated in the street over some funny money. He became a martyr, when he deserved to live.

Someone should make a thread talking about neo-nazism and how terms like "cultural marxist" date back to the red scare and antisemitic conspiracy theories of the 1950's. Oh yeah, the video is rough. I can relate a lot to what he's singing about, and the part where he feels so alienated and left out while everyone else is having so much fun that he goes and cries in the bathroom... I've been there. It fucking kills me.

Dude definitely had it rougher than I did, I came to terms with my queerness kind of easily (though I'm not out, admittedly, so :/) and while I've had issues with my appearance and self esteem, none of that was rooted in internalized racism like his bars about his lips and skin.

But I know where he's coming from about having friends who actually just pick on you. I know how it feels to basically want to live for the sake of eventually dying, and to live in the shadow of your past mistakes and not being able to move on from them. A lot of what he's saying is pertinent to what I'm going through right now.

I'm really happy he's moving forward with his life and career, and I hope the hate he gets doesn't get to him and ruin his career and his life. He's like 5 years younger than I am. He's still got a chance to make it.

I'm doing okay, on and off y'know. I'm coming to terms with what caused the original depression and moving forward with that, but I've got new stuff to worry about which is why I'm coming back to this world.

I just got back from a week-long trip meant to clear my head, but on Thursday I got black out drunk in a city I don't know too well and lost four hours of my life. Last thing I remember was a taxi driver driving slowly around the block to rack up a bigger fare when he thought I was passed out. Just kinda blinked back into existence, walking along a light rail track about 5km from where I was staying, at 5.30 AM (light rail starts at 6, I figure I knew that would be the safest place to walk home). And then I got lost again.

It's a lot to take in. All my money was gone. So now I've gotta work through that, and it really harmed all the progress I had made already.

The goal is to have a perfectly flat horizon, levelled down to sea level, by hand. On survival (peaceful), no cheats.

I made a topic earlier this year about it, which is why I made an update thread.

On a track-by-track basis Bobby and the Rat-Kings is definitely the best one, but as a whole the EP definitely works better when approached as one long song. When taken that way it probably comes close to rivalling Palisades Park as their best piece of work.

Yeah, I tried listening to Bobby and the Rat-Kings by itself and it really benefits from the build up provided by the rest of the album. And you're right, when taken as an entire, long song, it takes cues from Palisades Park. Like the soft breakdown at the end of Bobby and the Rat-Kings is very reminiscent of that song.

It's insane to me how they've managed to marry the past and the (relative) present to create something this rich. Again, wasn't super hot on Somewhere Under Wonderland - but this suite really brings their sound forward from that album and brings it up to a whole other level.

Also, fun little observation from the YouTube comments: Bobby and the Rat-Kings is very much in the vein of the Boomtown Rats - it gave me I Don't Like Mondays vibes at points, which is the one song of theirs I know - and it can be intuited that Bobby and the Rat-Kings are meant to represent Bob Geldof and the Boomtown Rats. Kinda blew my mind when I read that lmao.

My initial thoughts were mixed, but after a few listens, it really grew on me. The last album I loved was Hard Candy, and Saturday Nights and Sunday Mornings grew on me - but Underwater Sunshine and Somewhere Under Wonderland didn't hit super hard.

I would recommend listening to this single before listening to the full stream of Butter Miracle. You'll see why.

The way they're releasing music is in "suites". Butter Miracle is suite one, and over time they're releasing different suites, presumably at around the same length as Butter Miracle (18 minutes).

Honestly, this is the most enjoyable Counting Crows project in years. I know there's a user here who liked Somewhere Under Wonderland, but personally the last two albums have been very hit and miss for me. Butter Miracle really harkens back to the Counting Crows I enjoy the most.

There are a few callbacks to prior albums and songs, so if that's not your thing, you might not like it as much. But holy fuck, I'm enjoying this. I'm so happy, Counting Crows are back.

I agree completely. This song has this soft brokenhearted rnb sound from like the 90's or something that I really like.

And I get what you mean about too much fat, but some songs need that little extra something to chew on. I don't like the radio version of Careless Whisper for example, but the album version actually has a little bit of preamble that leads up to the first sax part, and it genuinely makes the entire song more palatable. Some songs overstay their welcome, and the radio single that cuts it down ends up being a better product.

Personally I just want something more to chew on with this track. One more verse that brings this song in at like 4:30 or less? Perfect song.

I don't know enough about TC to say if he's trolling or not. But in regards to abuse, people can remain in abusive relationships for years because the alternative looks worse.

TC mentioned that his current home life is untenable, which is why he was moving out with his girlfriend. Between a relationship with another person in a new environment and being single and isolated in a poor living situation, most people are going to take the former. Even if the former situation has its own caveats.

There's also the fact that abuse can manifest in ways that make the abused party rely on the abuser, physically or emotionally. By isolating someone, making them rely on you for housing and transport and limiting who they spend time with, you can basically control someone's entire life.

And people who are vulnerable, i.e. in untenable living conditions at home, are ripe for that sort of treatment. They don't want to be alone. The other person, regardless of how poorly they treat them, seems like a better option because it's love and it's an escape from the issues they already face. And this can last for years, especially when the vulnerable party doesn't have access to healthy, tenable relationships - which abusive relationships can remove from the equation by isolating them.

I don't know what's up with TC, I don't know them well enough to know if this is a troll or not. But not being able to leave an abusive partner for years, even when they're being overtly abusive towards you, is an experience that most abuse victims share. The same people who troll users like butthole666 for going back to his abusive girlfriend should be ashamed of themselves, because there's usually a lot more going on than "I'm going to go back to someone who punched me in the face". Isolation, misguided feelings of love and/or living conditions and relationships that just aren't working for you - especially when you've already been groomed by an abuser - makes it incredibly easy to relapse back into abusive relationships. The process of abuse enables that mindset to make abused parties come back to their abusers.

I'd rather waste time on a troll than forego someone who's legitimately in need of help.

You are not responsible for her wellbeing, especially after what she did to you. This is a manipulation tactic.

You need to get in touch with a friend who can help you weather this, and you need to call 911, tell them that someone is sending you suicide threats and that you think they need to be on suicide watch. You don't engage with her. You are not responsible for how she treats herself, especially with the way she treats you.

This is a manipulation tactic. It's scary, but you can offer her the help she seeks by calling 911, telling them what she told you, and directing them to where she is to administer treatment. If she's serious, the care will do her good. If she's not serious, you can't be blamed for not knowing that since she sent you messages threatening to kill herself. Whatever you do - don't engage with her directly.

Whatever you do, I think it's imperative that you cut her out completely. Even if every instinct you have is screaming at you to "be civil" or whatever, you'll be doing yourself a massive favour by unfriending and blocking any and all accounts of hers you're familiar with.

We all want to love and be loved in return, and we can't really control how we feel. You can do everything in the world to be less jealous, but jealousy still manifests when something hits you the right way. The musician isn't so sure about that, and he subscribes to the Greek ideals behind love - that it's a wild force of nature that can and will destroy anything in its path to its own ends, which is just the expression of itself. And to that end, love can drive people to terrible, terrible extremes, and it can lead to people enabling behavior that harms them.

You don't have to act on feelings of love and suffer the ill effects of doing so, but if they're strong enough, you might be compelled to do so. That's why support is so important. You've got to be around people who'll tell you no, that what you're thinking of doing is a terrible idea. And you need to be around people who understand what you've been through, and who care about your wellbeing. You'll probably love your girlfriend for a long time, even with everything that's transpired between you both. But you don't have to give in. You don't have to make that mistake.

I do listen digitally, I'd even say that I've heard each and every album in my collection on YouTube or Spotify before I picked up the album.

I picked CDs because even if the platform is being phased out, with newer cars not even coming with CD players any more, they're still physical media that I can grab off the shelf and put into a machine to enjoy whenever I want. I like the form factor, my entire collection fits in a desk drawer or in the console of a car. They're relatively cheap as well.

Honestly, if Minidiscs had caught on, I'd probably be more into Minidisc. They're hardy, they're portable and I think they'd be insanely collectible with the different colours the cases can be. But as a platform, CDs are ubiquitous because of their popularity, they're relatively portable and if I can't get to the internet - whether there's no cell service, the Wi-Fi is spotty or goes down for a while or if I don't have phone data - I can always get to a CD.

The question is, do I always have access to a CD player? Sometimes I don't. But that's a problem with a simple solution.

Edit: I actually bought All Eternals Deck at a Mountain Goats show in 2017 lmao - got a tote bag too. That was the only show I've ever been to, due to distance from the venue (I saw them in Sydney which is a few hours away, and I caught a train up) and because as an Australian, shows aren't all that plentiful when pretty much everyone you listen to is from overseas.

I just got home from a trip I was planning in April - I was gonna hop on a bus and spend a week in Canberra, and I saw that King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard were touring around the same time so I got excited about syncing my trip up with a King Gizzard concert. They hit Adelaide, Sydney and Brisbane - but they skipped Canberra entirely. So that sucked. That's partially why I took the trip later than planned.

If you liked I Don't Want To See You With Her, I have to recommend Nevermind Me if you haven't heard it before. Apologies if you have, though - it's just such a great song about being on the hook for someone and putting yourself second, and it's probably the song that resonates with me the most.

Has it Happened Yet is on the Heavyweight EP! It's one of the reasons I got the thing in the first place. And Meet Me By the Water is probably one of my most listened to songs by her, just through like playlists and stuff. That's wild, I'm glad you enjoy their stuff

Try not to get bogged down in the Montero discourse, and even if you hated that song, give this song a chance.

This song really needs a second verse. I love the jangly guitar, I love the vibe of the song and of Lil Nas X singing, and I love the video. I relate to a lot of what he's singing about. But it's one verse and then it's over.

Last year, my pop hit of the year was Blinding Lights. I maintain that Blinding Lights is an incredible song, whether people are sick of it or not. It's loud, it's energetic and the synth hook on that song should hopefully go down as the hottest hook of 2020.

My feelings on Sun Goes Down are that with a second verse and a refrain at the end that goes into a higher register, this song will be this year's Blinding Lights for me. That might sound ridiculous, because they're honestly night and day. I'm not saying they're similar at all, I'm saying that this is the pop single of 2021 I've enjoyed the most - just like how Blinding Lights was my favorite pop single of 2020.

I don't like how Lil Nas X songs feel like they're templates for even better remixes. It's like if Gorillaz put out Song Machine without any of the features - The Pink Phantom would probably still be a decent Elton John pastiche, but without Elton John himself on that song, would it have had as much impact? Would The Lost Chord have resonated as much without the ethereal vocals of the feature?

There actually are some rough Gorillaz demos out there, and they're fun to listen to, but when you add a feature or add that something that really makes it pop, it takes on a life of its own. If Lil Nas X made a Song Machine-esque album where all the features were there from the start and all of the songs were between 3 and 5 minutes long - or longer - it would probably do numbers.

But shorter songs are better for streams, which is probably where Lil Nas X is focusing his business. And while I understand that the music landscape is changing, and that he's basically at the forefront of the industry at the moment in that regard... I can't help but feel like songs like Sun Goes Down are incomplete. And it's a real bummer when I hear something like this song that feels like it should have gone longer, especially if it gets a remix later on that completes it.

I heard Anthony Fantano espouse the same idea of incompleteness before I heard the track, and I heard Todd in the Shadows say the same thing about Montero and Lil Nas X's music as a whole. I don't want to be seen as a critic nuthugger, though I have been bringing Fantano up lately on a discord channel I'm in. But I can't help but agree. Sun Goes Down feels half-finished. And I hate that, because I like it a lot.

I've got a local game store that's trying to get rid of all their CDs, so they're going for a dollar each. I used to go into and buy 10 CDs at a time - even tried making a music review blog where I review each of those $1 CDs - so I've got a ton of stuff just fuckin lying around.

I've got a shoebox full of mediocre CDs, there are like 50+ in there. The collection I posted are CDs I got specifically because I adore the artist and/or album in question.

Rachael Yamagata is an interesting name.

It is - I think it's very fun to say, haha. Her dad's Japanese. I don't know how I'd describe her sound, but I think her work has a lot more Americana influence later in her career - songs like Nashville or Stick Around, for example.

She's also got this album out called Elephants... Teeth Sinking Into Heart, which is legitimately one of the most downcast albums I've ever heard. Over and Over gives me this feeling of waking up to cold rain coming down in sheets, with a blanket of freezing air seeping in from an open window and lying low over everything in your room. And you look up from your bubble of protective warmth kept in by your blanket, and see rain clinging to the fly screen of your window. It's cozy but dismal at the same time - like it's beautiful, but you don't want to get out of bed and live in a world like that.

We're a group of people who will sit for hours, days, even weeks on end performing some of the hardest, most mentally demanding tasks. Over, and over, and over all for nothing more than a little digital token saying we did.

We'll punish our selfs doing things others would consider torture, because we think it's fun.

These people honestly think this is a battle they can win? They take our media? We're already building a new one without them. They take our snack cakes? White people aren't shy about throwing their money else where, or even making the cakes our selves. They think calling us racist, mysoginistic, rape apologists is going to change us? We've been called worse things by prepubescent 10 year olds with a shitty head set. They picked a fight against a group that's already grown desensitized to their strategies and methods. Who enjoy the battle of attrition they've threatened us with. Who take it as a challange when they tell us we no longer matter. Our obsession with proving we can after being told we can't is so deeply ingrained from years of dealing with big brothers/sisters and friends laughing at how pathetic we used to be that proving you people wrong has become a very real need; a honed reflex.

White people are competative, hard core, by nature. We love a challange. The worst thing you did in all of this was to challange us. You're not special, you're not original, you're not the first; this is just another boss fight.

I just want to clarify because that sounds extremely fucking KKK-adjacent - it's the gamer rant copypasta but I replaced gamer with white people. Like I'm sure it came across, but I'm not taking any chances of being tied to this statement unironically - this is a repurposed meme and not a reflection of my views whatsoever.
