The reason the US is so pro-vaccine/booster is because advocating for another lockdown is political suicide.

If the vaccines don't work, then we should go back to mask mandates and lockdowns, but I'm sure Ulti isn't for that either.

I hope your bud gets well

I am of the mindset that vaccines do something but I can understand the frustration. I'm a teacher and I can use my own personal experience to make an argument that the vaccines have been effective, but who knows about the next few weeks

I think case numbers by and large are underreported anyway due to the asymptomatic nature of Covid (which is why we are seeing big outbreaks in professional athletes, because they actually test). This isn't to say that vaccines don't work, as long as they are keeping the virus relatively mild/manageable.

The argument that "if E1-3 was your first third case you would probably think about it more fondly" is just bunk. The writing in the first Edgeworth game is bad. The first PW game is basic/bare bones/simple, but the writing throughout is objectively better than anything in E1.

Also "6-2 is seen as the best second case and it's not even close." CITATION NEEDED. That's 3-2 all day.

GAA1-1 and 1-3 both utilize circumstantial evidence surrounding steak as sound legal arguments. But does 1-3 have a hidden baby? I don't think so! Anyway 1-3 wins.

GAA1-2 and GAA1-4 are definitely NOT better than 1-3. I like GAA1-4 more than most, but it just isn't.

GAA1-3 is a great case, but it's still mired in tutorial stuff and bad character design. 1-3 wins.

I'd say GAA1-5 is better than 1-3, but it's a tough call. 1-3 is formative for the series in many ways. It has the first real surprising twist that the series is known for, and it's got some good Edgeworth. The culprit is a big whatever. That said, there is just so much "more" to GAA1-5 than 1-3 in terms of stakes, characters, and emotional heft.

GA2 definitely makes the first one better in context, but I also think GA1 is good on its own. I agree that the multiple witness/jury stuff isn't that great, and the deductions (particularly in GA1) are so "elementary" the point of wondering "why bother." That being said, the game still deserves good marks for its overall story.

By story, I don't mean the mysteries themselves, because there are certainly some issues there, but in terms of how the game develops the four main characters - Ryunoske, Susato, Sholmes, and Iris, I was honestly shocked at how good a job it did. I think the game handles romance/romantic potential better than any prior AA game. I think Magnus McGilded is a really fascinating character, and the game makes some really intriguing decisions if you think of him as the game's overarching villain. I really enjoy Gina, Gregson and Natsume as supporting characters (that last one is for sure debatable). People are right to say GA2 is better in every way, but there's a lot to like, I think.

Anyway, that's my pitch for why GA1 is okay/mid-tier Ace Attorney.

Regarding character writing, I completely agree. I feel like the 3DS games - perhaps after the backlash of AJ - are a bit afraid to develop the main characters/take them into new places, which is why Phoenix feels a bit off and Athena is introduced and developed in DD but turned into an afterthought in SOJ. Apollo gets development, but it's in very heavy handed ways that can be emotionally satisfying but also kind of awkwardly implemented (characters retconned into his backstory and subsequently killed).

But you don't have a problem with GAA2-4 (along with other GAA cases) not feeling like their own cases...?

yeah I'm probably being a bit too harsh on 5-4.

As for GAA2-4; you're right, that does seem hypocritical. I think I would have preferred if GA2-4 ended with getting seishiro declared guilty while GA2-5 begins with the Sholmes dinner scene, with the next trial day devoted to revisiting the professor case. I'm not quite sure why they didn't do it that way but eh. Because I actually do think that GA2-5 eventually begins to feel like it's own case... it just takes a while to get there.

My only issue with G1-5 the cat door thing is that I'm PRETTY sure the game lies to you. I am pretty sure that door had like a handle on it and was clearly not a cat door in the cutscene. Other than that, I thought it was an absolutely brilliant twist.

the outrage over handlegate is what caused them to not have anime cutscenes in GA2 obviously

I don't get the low rank for DD which is my #1 (can't speak for I2), but otherwise I agree with a lot of that.

I never got into the juries in this game at all, definitely a huge negative. The very last just was totally solid both in mechanics and meaningful presence. Everything before that was just annoying.

I really don't think the hologram and catbox are on the same level, though. One's a visual gag that's not really effecting anything and is pretty dang funny. The other is a fundamental core piece of case evidence that completely falls apart and damages the narrative.

I won't belabor the point because like I said I totally get the complaints but I feel like the game going out of its way to show you wagahai going through the cat door on no fewer than 2 occasions is enough of a "plant" to make it not feel like a "total" asspull. It's obviously completely absurd on multiple levels, but I guess I just don't care? Like to me this is not all that different than and even preferable to somebody showing up with a book on "evidence law" at the very last minute and objecting on those grounds

DD doesn't click with me for whatever reason. I like 5-3 and the DLC case a lot. I think I dislike how 5-1 and 5-4 don't feel like their own cases by the end of the game (and just parts of 5-5).I also think every single culprit in DD sucks (again 5-DLC is an exception) which might be my main problem now that I think about it.

Finished GAA2. I think it's a monumental achievement. So impressive. I honestly thought Takumi didn't have it in him anymore. All the high reviews make sense.

In terms of "tight murder mysteries" and challenging puzzles these games might be disappointments, but the pathos/characterization/humor is pitch perfect and top tier AA to me. Like I definitely get people's complaints about GA1-4 (for sure) and GA1-5 (to a lesser extent). Its really hard for me to take issue with GA2-5 though. It goes a bit long but that's about it. All of the murders do require suspension of disbelief and some willingness to ignore strict logic in order to serve the narrative, so yeah, I get it.

One thing though: if stuff like the cat-flap-o-rat and the hologram stuff bothers you, then I understand. Normally I'd be with you. Like if this stuff showed up in Danganronpa I'd groan. But for some reason it works for me, because of how well Sholmes is written as a character.Again, I get it though.

The only thing that prevents me from calling this my second favorite game in the series are the annoyingly cartoony witness/jury characters. I know the series has always had the occasional weird looking NPC but there's a weird children's book aesthetic here that's been carried over from PLvsAA that I just find distasteful. Both of the GA games are also way too easy. Anyway, "story-wise" GA2 is probably the best game in the series since T&T, but when I factor gameplay in it drops it down to maybe fourth overall in the power rankings. GA1 is weaker, but I would still rank it over AJ, DD, and the Edgeworth games(yes, both of them).

Bad comics news, in case anyone here reads X-Men:

https://ew.com/books/inferno-jonathan-hickman-last-x-men-comic/

I don't know if anyone else here was reading this, but long story short: X-Men comics sucked for a long time. Marvel got one of their best writers - who had crafted long high-concept critically acclaimed arcs for Avengers and Fantastic Four - to revive the brand. It worked. He came out with the best X-Men comics in decades. He confirms in the interview that he had broad plans for a three-arc storyline. Marvel pairs him with a bunch of (hack) writers to capitalize on the event. Marvel decides to stay in "the first arc" and the good writer (Hickman) leaves.

I'm gutted

Overall, an exceptionally pleasant experience. I'm mad at myself for believing this was a bad game due to some comments here and elsewhere. It started out kind of rough but by the end of it I was fully loving these characters. The way this game handles Susato is amazing.

I will say that Case 5 and the spectrograph stuff made me feel like something was wrong with me. I've never been able to cross my eyes my entire life, so it was frustrating having to just let the game solve the puzzles for me.

Looking forward to starting GAA2 soon!
