there's some weird shit going on with sega having huge amounts of unpaid royalties to the jackson estate (among other entities)

1 and 2's music was done by a popular japanese music group and they have to pay royalties whenever they use the tracks
i think they own green hill's music but idk

they don't own a chunk of 3&k's ost but there are plenty of tracks by jun sunoue and co they can use (lava reef, angel island, flying battery, marble garden, assorted jingles, etc) and the ones they can't use are pretty clear stylistic outliers (ice cap, carnival night, launch base)

the ai's pretty bad when it comes to routing and using items
it's insanely easy to gain an insurmountable lead on many tracks because the ai just doesn't have the ability to optimize it route

how do you fall into the pit while fighting egg viper unless you just really suck
falling for the final attack, sure, but otherwise? you pretty much have to be trying to fall

it's a way rougher game but it has a lot of dumb charm
it's hard to hate it

Also SA1 has these hub world sections that you travel through as the different characters as opposed to just picking the next level on a map like in SA2.

you didn't pick your next level on a map in sa2, the game sent you from level to level with cutscenes in between

they make everything really round and simple and boring

the only reason to talk to toads is to get stars, all other toads are just there to say hi to you and we have better things to do than say hi!

yeah, and the very same toad that gives you a star in the final area is the same one who tells you about the clock's mechanics
if people don't know about the clock, it's because they make an active decision not to seek out information from the game (or choose not to read it when it is presented)

it's weird how people talk about stuff like "the water level is based on the height you enter at" and "the clock speed is based on where the hand points" when there are literally toads nearby that explain in no uncertain terms how it works
