Will we still be okay? Because there are evidently a lot more anti vaxxers around me than I first thought, I have two co-workers in my department who are openly stating they won't get the vaccine and I definitely don't want to sit by them if that's the case.

10% is probably okay
I mean ideally everyone, but that would still give enough herd immunity given the logic the 1 out of 10 people wouldn't often run into each other. I think 85% is considered decent herd immunity? Immunology is a distant memory. --- Pit doc ... Copied to Clipboard!

well, if its just 10% that go unvaccinated then we'd be fine, that's well within the required rate for herd immunity to actually work. thing is it'll likely be well above 10% that try to refuse.

True
Most studies I've seen seem to indicate around only half of people will actually get it Which makes it somewhat useless. However, these mRNA vaccines seem to get humoral and cellular immunity well. People that are vaccinated are PROBABLY not going to be able to transmit it or really get that sick. So, the population that doesn't vaccinate is essentially going to self-select for whatever consequence that comes. --- Pit doc ... Copied to Clipboard!

Really though 40% isn't even that scary of a number if we're talking this early on. We need a lot of them to change their mind, but I believe it's about 70% that we need to feel like we for sure have herd immunity. If these 40% are steadfast against a vaccine, then that's a problem, but typically some of the people saying no change their mind after more testing and more success. If just 40% refuse right now, I don't think it's out of the question that 10% change their mind if the vaccine is shown to be safe and effective.

I think a lot of people are reasonably skeptical about how quick these vaccines have developed, but they don't understand that the reason for it is because a lot of the red tape beauracratic stuff was cut out and shifting priorities allowed researchers to get it done this quickly as it became the only focus for a lot of these companies. Not to also mention the use of modern scientific tools. The vaccine still followed the usual testing and review process and also had thousands of people volunteering for the clinical trials.
