Literally you need to make an argument here about reasonable expectation of risk, and if that expectation was violated, for it to be a rational argument here and that's literally not done here.

That's why I mentioned other places keep theirs cooler. Seems reasonable enough to me to expect fast food places to be about the same, why not?

COVxy posted...
Is literally the argument you have to make, that it's not reasonable to expect customers to know that spilling a hot liquid in their lap and not being able to remove it instantly could be bad.

But there's a big difference between 190 and 150 even though both are hot. So that's why I'm asking you to talk about that directly.

So that graph is for constant temperature from a faucet. How much bigger is the difference in that case? You're better at math than I am but I remember stuff cools based on like surface area and volume right? So if you spill coffee it gets colder pretty fast. Do you know how fast and how that would change the relationship in the graph?

We're literally talking about two different things. Like, what if she wore tear away hydrophobic pants!? Then there's no risk at all. McDonalds obv. wins.

I asked you specifically how you knew what you were saying was accurate, and you were the one turned to examples. I was just responding in kind. Fwiw I think it's crazy to assume minutes is closer than seconds regardless in normal circumstances. I'm actually not sure why it's relevant she's 80, again to me there is a big difference between basically instantaneously vs a few seconds for any age. Keep in mind this graph is for a constant temperature from a faucet, irl coffee cools off when you spill it!

COVxy posted...
What literally happened in this case is a 79-year-old woman got out of the car to rectify the situation. That's a very long exposure time.

So you're arguing that it doesn't even matter if it was hot enough to fuse to her skin, because old women take a long time to get out of a parked car? Are you seriously listening to yourself here?

COVxy posted...
I mean, if 180-190 is denoted unsafe, then we obviously know what safe is, right?

Absolutely not, I'm not the one claiming to be smarter than anyone else or know what the real deal is rather than liking a narrative. I'm just looking at how you're arguing your point and it's so incredibly obvious you haven't looked into it because you don't think it matters because you know coffee is hot so everyone should, case closed

Sure, possibly, but on average? Probably not.

How do you know that?

COVxy posted...
But, like, do you really think people don't know that spilling a cup of coffee on their lap and leaving it there for an extended period of time is a risk of serious injury? Like is it unreasonable to expect an average person to know this?

I dunno, I don't think she just decided to leave it there? My assumption is she couldn't take the pants off because she was in too much pain or because it literally fused to her skin. But I don't know, how do you?

COVxy posted...
Sure, McDonald's shitty ass coffee can sit in the vat maintained at some lower temperature. But it sure would suck if that was the only way you could buy coffee!

I really feel like you just wanna be right here and haven't actually looked into it much at all except in response to criticisms of your argument. It's a weird look imo

It's so bizarre to me that you can say that without imagining maybe they don't need to do that at 150 or 160 instead of 180 or 190. I'm not even saying that's the case, you just haven't even acknowledged the possibility.

It's because they is a subject marker, which follow certain rules and conventions. The issue of confusion arises when the singularity or plurality of a statement matters, which is going to be contextual.

Most examples where people say it isn't problematic take simple example sentences which are often rigged to make sense because they follow established conventions or are fairly easy to parse.

If however you attempt to interchange They/Them with singular pronouns in a large research report or study that has many individual and group subjects (linguistic subject) you might find that the subject becomes confusing or ambiguous, or it becomes difficult to differentiate between when the subject is a known individual or a group. It'll also cause issues where there are multiple people in a conversation and you want to refer to a individual person but end up applying the subject to all people. OFC there will be times when it doesn't matter, but there are times when it becomes messy or confused.

OFC, if people continue to use they/them then this is something we just have to deal with, but it doesn't make those who point out that a new pronoun might be preferable ignorant.

Being a progressive doesn't prevent you from being able to enter dialogues about implementations, thats not regressive, especially when ideas are fairly new in mainstream discourse. What is regressive is to say that the intents of people who want a non binary pronoun are wrong.

I pulled up that languages have lots of exceptions, which some then go on to say "well yes, we deal with this all the time", which we do, but its a learned skill. Anyone who has studied Spanish or Japanese will understand how what may appear fast and loose with rules often isn't so fast and loose. There are established conventions that make the exceptions work, these conventions can often be a case of learning them on a case by case basis or studying lots of complex rules. Ser and Estar or and being prime examples.

That was a lot of words to not give a single example where it might matter. I can't think of a large research report where it would be appropriate to use either he/she or them, but using them would cause confusion but he or she wouldn't.

It's also probably true that this particular issue with gender identity wouldn't come up much if ever in that format anyway.

In what large group conversation is he or she going to be less confusing than they?

I don't identify as progressive, this has nothing to do with ideology, I'm being totally transparent about my reasoning. Which is that it's hard for me to see when it would matter. And which your post didn't dissuade me from thinking

It's definitely a big boon to business, and it's not accidental. But the vast majority of the tax benefits will accrue to the wealthy, because of how income taxes are structured.

But in either case it's just bad tax policy to let a business write off expenses it pays for out of something that didn't count as income. You can be in the red on paper until you make enough profit to negate the forgiven loans

Like I'm struggling to think of a scenario where it creates confusion. It's not impossible but in most of the contexts I can think of any pronoun would be confusing.

"Jim, Dan, and Joe came by earlier, man they suck" is unhelpful but no less or more than just saying he.

it's kind of technical, basically it lets businesses that have ppp loans forgiven to deduct expenses paid with ppp loans from their taxable income. But since ppp loans that were forgiven don't count as income, that gives businesses a tax subsidy on top of the federal government paying their expenses directly

I don't get really get it. Maybe politicians do favor the middle class (debatable) but even if they do that wouldn't prove appealing to the middle class is the most effective use of political capital. For example, if the term working class is meant to sneak middle class people into conversations about poverty, that's evidence it's more effective to make broad appeals
