After several conversations and literally running away from reporters, Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (Q-CA) made clear that he is refusing to take action against conspiracy theorist Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene. As a result, the House will continue with a vote to strip Greene of her seat on the esteemed House Committee on Education & Labor and House Committee on Budget. McCarthys failure to lead his party effectively hands the keys over to Greene an anti-Semite, QAnon adherent and 9/11 Truther.

McCarthys cowardly refusal to deal with Greene breaks with calls from Senator Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, Rep. Adam Kinzinger, the Republican Jewish Coalition and several prominent members of the party to take action against Greene.

As No 2. Senate Republican John Thune warned Tuesday, McCarthy has chosen to make House Republicans the party of conspiracy theories and QAnon and Rep. Greene is in the drivers seat.

I don't get where this idea that Columbus thought the world was smaller than it was is coming from.

Because he did. Not only did he use completely wrong values and units (not counting for conversions), he straight up changed geography to fit his beliefs.

https://spectrum.ieee.org/tech-talk/at-work/test-and-measurement/columbuss-geographical-miscalculations

Washington Irvings overly imaginative A History of the Life and Voyages of Christopher Columbus notwithstanding, it was widely known by the 15th Century that the Earth is spherical. The question was, how big is the sphere? In 200 BCE, after all, Eratosthenes calculated the circumference of the earth to within one percent of its actual girth. He figured that one degree of latitude was equal to 59.5 nautical miles.

In making his own calculation, however, Columbus preferred the values given by the medieval Persian geographer, Abu al Abbas Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn Kathir al-Farghani (a.k.a. Alfraganus): one degree (at the equator) is equal to 56.67 miles. That was Columbuss first error, which he compounded with a second: he assumed that the Persian was using the 4 856-foot Roman mile; in fact, Alfraganus meant the 7 091-foot Arabic mile. (This is, of course, the sort of confusion of units that sent the Mars Climate Orbiter into its terminal swan dive in September 1999.)

Taken together, the two miscalculations effectively reduced the planetary waistline to 16,305 nautical miles, down from the actual 21,600 or so, an error of 25 percent.

And then there was the third error. Not content with whittling down the degree by 25 percent, Morison writes, Columbus stretched out Asia eastward until Japan almost kissed the Azores. Through a complicated chain of reasoning that mixed Ptolemy, Marinus of Tyre, and Marco Polo with some corrections of his own, Columbus calculated that he would find Japan at 85 west longitude (rather than 140 east)moving it more than 8,000 miles closer to Cape St. Vincent.

All in all, he figured, the Indies were just 68 degrees west of the Canary Islands. Calculated travel distance: 3080 nautical miles. Actual distance from Tenerife to Jakarta: 7313 nautical miles. Margin of error: 58 percent.

Of course, Morison noted, Columbus's calculation is not logical, but Columbuss mind was not logical. He knew he could make it, and the figures had to fit. Morison, an admiral himself, is full of admiration for Columbuss skill as a practical navigator, capable of pinpoint landfalls on his returns to the New World. As a metrologist and theoretician, however, he failed to double-check his work.

Portugal mainly got control of Africa and the Eastern part due to the Treaty of Tordesillas, but Spain also grabbed the Philippines too. Portugal was already in Africa(vaguely North Africa at the time well before Columbus set voyage). There's a reason they risked everything to sail west to possibly find an alternative route.

Spain didn't grab The Philippines until the 1520s. It took them almost 30 years after Columbus landed in the East Indies to finally reach Asia. Their trade route ended up having to go across the Pacific and then the Atlantic.

And were long gone by then and that would have been a fairly long time ago. What is your point? They had gone through the dark ages by then.

The spice trade literally drove the world economy for centuries and Genoa was one of the main trade centres when Columbus was born and grew up there. This has nothing to do with the Spanish potentially not knowing what Indians look like, it's all on Columbus.

JBaLLEN66 posted...
Cristopher Columbus is a **** human being, but it's not like he knew there was a different continent lmao

Columbus being an idiot has nothing to do with North and South America actually existing. It's solely:

1) He massively overestimated how wide Eurasia was in terms of longitude.
2) He massively underestimated how far west India/China/Japan were, partly because of 1 and partly because he used the wrong fucking units in his calculations

There's also no evidence he ever actually believed he hadn't reached the Far East, despite the fact all evidence would point to the contrary the longer he stayed there and the more he explored.

And don't forget that just 5 years after Columbus landed in The Bahamas, Vasco da Gama sailed south around Africa and up its east coast and made it to India for the Portuguese, which eventually led to Portugal having complete control of the spice trade in the early 1500s.

https://www.nknews.org/2021/01/kim-jong-uns-wife-has-been-missing-from-the-public-eye-for-more-than-a-year/

The wife of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has been missing from the public eye for more than a year now, leading some analysts to wonder what happened to the countrys breakout first lady.

Ri Sol Ju, who is thought to be 32 years old, was last seen in state media sitting next to Kim at Pyongyangs Samjiyon Theater for a Lunar New Years Day performance that took place on Jan. 25, 2020. Before she disappeared from state media, Ri was the first wife of a North Korean leader to repeatedly appear next to her husband in public and experts now say that her missing status suggests that Kim no longer cares to look like a normal world leader.

North Korea has already emphasized enough how Kim Jong Un is a normal country leader who brings his wife to events, said Lim Eul-chul, a professor of North Korean studies at Kyungnam University. But now, for Pyongyang, economic problems and real achievements not formalities or image are most important and urgent.

Analysts also said that the public should be skeptical of rumors that Ri is in poor health or that she has been purged. After all, Ri has intermittently disappeared from the public eye for months in the past without any explanation.

[Her disappearance] could be due to COVID-19 As a mother with young children, participating in public activities risks potential infection, said Hong Min, director of the North Korean research division at Korea Insitute for National Unification (KINU). Even Kim Jong Un went on the lowest number of on-site guidances in the past year.

North Korean state media first introduced Ri Sol Ju in July 2012, with her appearing at public events more than 100 times since. But experts say that Ris only 2020 public appearance was at the Samjiyon Theater, and they can only guess why that might be.

The change in the foreign affairs situation could have affected Ris disappearance, Hong told NK News. When there were multiple summits with other countries, Ris role a role universally expected as a first lady was on the rise But now, diplomacy has all stalled.

Ri accompanied her husband during the height of North Korean diplomacy in 2018, when Kim met with South Korean President Moon Jae-in and his wife, Kim Jung-sook, in Pyongyang.

Ri also went to Beijing with her husband in March 2018 to meet Chinese President Xi Jinping, and greeted him again in Pyongyang in June 2019. All of these diplomatic visits were on top of her other trips with Kim Jong Un, such as a visit to North Koreas Wonsan-Kalma tourist zone, as well.

At one point, Ri stood alone in the spotlight: North Koreas state-run Rodong Sinmun newspaper wrote on April 15, 2018 that the respected first lady met a Chinese delegation without Kim. At the time, some experts thought that she was rising to further state prominence.

There was definitely a time when it looked like Ri Sol Ju is going to gradually start taking on a role such as independently greeting foreign dignitaries, Hong said.

For now, North Korea watchers are waiting for Ri to reappear and once she does, she still probably wont show up on state media as often as she once did, according to Lim.

Ri may attend from time to time on family-related events, like her last appearance when she sat next to Kim Kyong Hui, [Kim Jong Uns aunt], he said. [North Korea is not] pressured anymore to plan for extra formalities to have Ri attend events just to show that Kims wife is well.

Bio1590

https://www.cbsnews.com/news/rnc-trump-donor-retreat/

The Republican National Committee is planning to invite former President Trump to their spring donor meeting in April, two sources confirmed to CBS News. The news comes as the RNC tries to figure out its post-Trump future and amid his polarizing impeachment and the loss of two high-profile Senate seats in Georgia, throwing the Senate majority to the Democrats.

Despite the turmoil within the party, RNC chair Ronna McDaniel, an ally of Mr. Trump's, was unanimously reelected earlier this month.

Mr. Trump has not yet made a public appearance since he left office on January 20. McDaniel told The Washington Post on Thursday that Mr. Trump's role post-presidency "is going to be up to him in a lot of ways."

Mr. Trump has publicly indicated he is considering running for president again in 2024. McDaniel assured The Associated Press on Thursday that the national party would remain neutral in a 2024 primary, even if it included Mr. Trump.

"The party has to stay neutral. I'm not telling anybody to run or not to run in 2024," McDaniel told The Associated Press when asked whether she wanted to see Trump run again in the next presidential election. "That's going to be up to those candidates going forward. What I really do want to see him do, though, is help us win back majorities in 2022."

McDaniel made few references to Mr. Trump in her speech after being reelected to lead the RNC two days after a mob of Mr. Trump's supporters stormed the U.S. Capitol, sending lawmakers fleeing and delaying the count of the Electoral College votes.

Earlier on January 6, Mr. Trump had urged his supporters to "fight like hell" to stop Congress from counting the Electoral College votes, leading to an assault on the Capitol that left five people dead in the melee. A number of Republican lawmakers went ahead with objections to the electoral vote despite the assault, most notably Senators Ted Cruz of Texas and Josh Hawley of Missouri.

One week later, he was impeached by the House on a charge of "incitement of insurrection" at the U.S. Capitol. Ten House Republicans, including Congresswoman Liz Cheney, the third-ranking Republican in the House, joined with the Democrats to vote to impeach Mr. Trump.

Since casting the vote for impeachment, Mr. Trump's allies have targeted Cheney, although House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy has urged the GOP to move on. Other House Republicans have faced backlash for the vote too.

Congressman Matt Gaetz, an ally of Mr. Trump's, traveled to Cheney's district on Thursday, calling her "disappointing" and "exactly like Congress deeply unpopular and owned by special interests."

Mr. Trump's impeachment trial is set to begin the week of February 8 in the Senate. Democrats would need 17 Republicans to join them to convict, but only a simple majority vote is needed to bar him from office moving forward.

While Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell has had some harsh words for Mr. Trump since he left office, 45 Republicans including McConnell voted earlier this week to block the impeachment trial.

Does this make them complicit?
