The thing that sucks about both this seat and Toomey's seat in PA is that they're almost guaranteed to go to Trump Republicans in '22.

We'll have to see but yeah I wouldn't be surprised if that played a role in his decision.

https://www.cnn.com/2021/01/25/politics/rob-portman-not-running-reelection-ohio-senate-race/index.html

Republican Sen. Rob Portman of Ohio announced Monday that he will not run for reelection after his current term in office ends in 2022, saying in a statement that the entrenched partisan gridlock in Washington was a factor in his decision.

The announcement will set off what could become a highly competitive race to fill the seat and will reshape the 2022 battlefield for control of the Senate. The news could also potentially pave the way for a crowded GOP primary field in a state won by former President Donald Trump in both the 2020 and 2016 presidential elections.

There is already speculation that Ohio Republican Rep. Jim Jordan, a close ally and vocal defender of Trump, could run. Other possible GOP candidates include: J.D. Vance, the author of Hillbilly "Elegy," Josh Mandel, who dropped out of the 2018 GOP primary race to challenge Democratic Sen. Sherrod Brown, and Jon Husted, the state's lieutenant governor.

A GOP source who has worked with the Portman team texted CNN: "There are two scenarios for the seat now: 1.) Jordan Runs and Clears the Field; 2.) Everyone in the State Runs."

Ohio Secretary of State Frank LaRose is also seriously eyeing a Senate bid, a former Ohio GOP official said.

LaRose, who served as a Green Beret in Iraq as a member of the Special Forces, is a former Republican state senator. He largely financed his own bid as secretary of state, and his family is well established and funded, as he is the son of a beer distribution family company.

At least three Ohio GOP representatives are also interested in running for Senate following Portman's announcement: Rep. Steve Stivers, Brad Wenstrup and Mike Turner, according to people familiar with their thinking.

On the Democratic side, one possible candidate could be Rep. Tim Ryan, who unsuccessfully ran for president in the 2020 Democratic primary. A top Democratic operative in the state told CNN they hope Ryan finally pulls the statewide trigger and runs. He had been thinking about governor, the source said, "but Senate clearly fits him better."

In his statement, Portman said that partisan stalemate has grown worse and that played a role in his decision, saying, "I don't think any Senate office has been more successful in getting things done, but honestly, it has gotten harder and harder to break through the partisan gridlock and make progress on substantive policy, and that has contributed to my decision."

"We live in an increasingly polarized country where members of both parties are being pushed further to the right and further to the left, and that means too few people who are actively looking to find common ground. This is not a new phenomenon, of course, but a problem that has gotten worse over the past few decades," he said, adding, "This is a tough time to be in public service."

In announcing his decision, Portman also signaled he stands ready to work with the Biden administration as it attempts to win bipartisan support for the President's economic rescue package responding to the pandemic.

"For many of the issues I am most passionate about, I will continue to make a difference outside of the Senate, beyond 2022. In the meantime, I am hopeful that President Biden will follow through on his inaugural pledge to reach across the aisle, and I am prepared to work with him and his administration if he does," he said. "I was on the bipartisan call yesterday on a new COVID-19 package. I hope the Administration will work with us on a more targeted approach that focuses on things like vaccine distribution, testing and getting kids back to school."

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell reacted to the news on Monday by saying in a statement that "My friend Sen. Portman's announced retirement in two years will be a big loss for the entire Senate."
"Both the Republican conference and the institution as a whole will be worse off when Rob departs. Fortunately, in the meantime, we have two more years to continue drawing on his knowledge, his principles, and his dedication as we keep fighting for American families," McConnell said.
GOP Sen. Lindsey Graham of South Carolina echoed that sentiment.

"Very, very sad to see that @senrobportman is not seeking reelection. Rob is one of the smartest, most sincere members of the Senate that I have ever known. This will be a major blow to the Senate as well as the Republican Party," Graham tweeted.

God help everyone if Jim Jordan runs and wins

lmaooooooooooooooooooooo apparently SCOTUS basically had no "choice" because the only lawsuits that made it through were trying to prevent him from continuing to do it, not actually seeking damages (which means he'd have to pay back all the money, which has happened to people found in violation of this in the past).

Almost like that was by design

https://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/americas/us-politics/supreme-court-trump-cases-emolument-b1792308.html

The US Supreme Court has dropped multiple emoluments cases against Donald Trump accusing him of profiting off the presidency, describing the remaining cases as moot now that he is no longer in office.

In tossing out the remaining cases against the former president, the nations highest court also ordered appeals courts in New York and Virginia to dismiss the lawsuits against him.

The justices threw out lower court rulings that had allowed the lawsuits - one filed by the District of Columbia and the state of Maryland and the other by plaintiffs including a watchdog group - to proceed, while also declining to hear Mr Trump's appeals of those decisions.

Plaintiffs accused the former president of running afoul of the Constitution's "emoluments" provisions that bar presidents from accepting gifts or payments from foreign and state governments without congressional approval.

The plaintiffs had asked the Supreme Court to reject Mr Trump's appeals because the dispute would disappear once he left office last Wednesday.

In one of the cases, plaintiffs including the nonprofit watchdog group Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington (CREW), a hotel owner and a restaurant trade group said the former Republican president's failure to disentangle himself from his businesses had made him vulnerable to inducements by officials seeking to curry favor.

The plaintiffs said that they lost patronage, wages and commissions from clients who chose Mr Trump's businesses over theirs because of the ability to gain the former president's favor.

After a federal judge initially threw out the case, the New York-based 2nd US Circuit Court of Appeals revived it in 2019.

A 2020 decision by the Richmond, Virginia-based 4th US Circuit Court of Appeals allowed the similar lawsuit by the District of Columbia and Maryland to proceed.

That suit focused on the Trump International Hotel in Washington, which became a favored lodging and event space for some foreign and state officials visiting Washington.

A third lawsuit filed by congressional Democrats against Mr Trump ended last year after the Supreme Court refused to hear their appeal of a lower court ruling that the lawmakers lacked the necessary legal standing to pursue the case.

https://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/americas/us-politics/giuliani-sued-election-fraud-trump-b1792216.html

Dominion Voting Systems has filed a defamation lawsuit against Rudy Giuliani, following months of baseless claims from Donald Trumps personal lawyer that the companys systems were rigged in the favour of the Democrats in 3 Novembers presidential election.

The 107-page lawsuit, which was filed by the company in the Federal District Court in Washington, DC, on Monday, accused Mr Giuliani of carrying out a viral disinformation campaign about Dominion that was made up of demonstrably false allegations, according to The New York Times.

The suit is seeking damages of more than $1.3bn (1.15bn) and is based on more than 50 statements made by Mr Giuliani on Twitter, his podcast and in the media.

In those statements, Mr Giuliani claimed that Dominion, which is one of the biggest voting machine manufacturers in the US, rigged its systems to flip votes from Mr Trump to then Democratic candidate Joe Biden.

Mr Giuliani filed around 50 lawsuits in several swing states lost by Mr Trump in an attempt to overturn the election, and has been widely criticised for his baseless claims. There is no evidence for claims of widespread fraud in 3 Novembers election.

Earlier this month, the chairman of the New York State Senates Judiciary Committee formally requested that Mr Giuliani have his law license revoked by the court system because of his claims.

He led the effort from the Trump campaign and its allies to overturn the election results and made several false comments on social media and on TV about Dominion.

In one statement on Twitter, Mr Giuliani said that phony Dominion voting machines needed to be investigated, while as recently as last week, he said on his radio show that he has boxes of evidence to support his claims, adding: So long as you have Dominion, there is clear and present danger.

However, in the lawsuit, Dominion notes that Mr Giuliani did not mention the company in any of his court filings, where he could have faced legal ramifications for making false claims.

Notably, not a single one of the three complaints signed and filed by Giuliani and other attorneys for the Trump Campaign in the Pennsylvania action contained any allegations about Dominion, the lawsuit filed on Monday said.

The lawsuit also claims that Mr Giulianis false claims about Dominion helped lead to the Capitol riots that took place on 6 January, as he mentioned the company in a speech at a rally prior to the insurrection and several times on social media as the Capitol was breached.

Five people were killed and several more were injured in the riots, as Mr Trump was impeached by the House for the second time for his role in inciting the riots at the Stop the Steal rally held nearby.

Having been deceived by Giuliani and his allies into thinking that they were not criminals but patriots Defend[ing] the Republic from Dominion and its co-conspirators they then bragged about their involvement in the crime on social media, the lawsuit said.

However, Thomas A Clare, a lawyer representing Dominion, said that the riots did not factor into the companys decision to sue Mr Giuliani, but showed how seriously Mr Trumps followers took the false claims.

In an interview to the Times, Mr Clare said: From a defamation law perspective, it just demonstrates the depth to which these statements sink in to people.

He added: That people dont just read them and tune them out. It goes to the core of their belief system, which puts them in a position to take action in the real world.

Last week, Dominion sent a cease-and-desist letter to MyPillow CEO Mike Lindell after he repeatedly supported Mr Trump and Mr Giulianis false claims, and Mr Clare suggested to the Times on Monday that more lawsuits will be filed soon.

There will certainly be others, he said. There are other individuals who have spoken the big lie and have put forward these defamatory statements about Dominion, but then there are also players in the media that have amplified it.

Mr Clare also refused to rule out filing a lawsuit against Mr Trump, adding: Obviously, this lawsuit against the presidents lawyer moves one step closer to the former president and understanding what his role was and wasnt.

The Independent has contacted Mr Giuliani for comment.
