TopicRemember when Trump stopped the FBI HQ relocation because of his hotel?

President Donald Trump was more instrumental than previously known in scrapping plans to move the FBI headquarters out of Washington to the DC suburbs, according to newly released internal government emails.

The decision could have financial benefits for the President, whose own hotel is located a block away, critics say.

The documents were released Thursday by House Democrats in a letter to General Services Administrator Emily Murphy that suggests she misled Congress about the Presidents involvement.

New documents provided to the Oversight Committee indicate that President Trump met personally with you, the FBI, and White House officials on January 24, 2018, where he was directly involved with the decision to abandon the long-term relocation plan and instead move ahead with the more expensive proposal to construct a new building on the same site, and thereby prevent Trump Hotel competitors from acquiring the land, states the letter by Maryland Rep. Elijah Cummings, the top Democrat on the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, and other senior Democrats.

White House spokeswoman Sarah Sanders said that the House Democrats have it all wrong.

The President wanted to save the government money and also the FBI leadership did not want to move its headquarters, she told CNN in a statement.

A financial analysis conducted by the GSAs inspector general, however, concluded that constructing a new FBI building in downtown DC would actually be more costly than relocating the bureau.

In a statement Thursday afternoon, GSA argued that the emails Democrats cited were taken out of context.

As previously testified by GSA and the FBI, the leadership team at the FBI made the decision to keep its headquarters at the current Pennsylvania Avenue location. A number of emails referenced in todays congressional letter are taken out of context and refer to the projects funding approach, not the location decision, agency spokeswoman Pamela Dixon said. Suggestions that those emails indicate presidential involvement in the location decision are inaccurate. GSA stands by its testimony and the cost analysis proposed in the joint revised plan submitted to Congress in February.

The days following the White House meeting included efforts to make the decision to keep the FBI in Washington official, specifically referencing Trumps wishes.

Just one day after the meeting with Trump in the Oval Office, GSAs acting chief of staff, Brennan Hart, sent an email to Joseph Lai, a special assistant to the President, to emphasize the decision had been made not to relocate the FBI headquarters.

Days later, GSAs acting general counsel, Jack St. John, suggested the need to get something in writing from the FBI and Justice Department that solidified what had been agreed upon in the meeting with Trump.

Hart responded in an email, Ideally, I think it would first recap the oval meeting with what POTUS directed everyone to do then ask Emily [Murphy] to execute POTUSs orders.

On January 28, Hart also sent an email to officials in the Office of Legislative Affairs discussing Trumps role that said, GSA is going to hold our ground on funding source and that it is a demolition/new construction per the Presidents instructions.

The documents obtained by House Democrats are a preview of the kinds of oversight Democrats might escalate if they win the House majority in November.

Democrats have serious concerns about the move on the FBI plan to replace it with a more costly plan to keep the current location, demolish the existing building, and construct a new facility on the same site, the letter states.

The have also raised questions about why the GSA chief was not more forthcoming with Congress about the White Houses role. In April, Murphy did not disclose shed met with the President about the project when asked by Rep. Mike Quigley, an Illinois Democrat, during a congressional hearing if the President or anyone at the White House was involved in the discussions about the future of the FBI building.

The General Services Administrations inspector general later said Murphys testimony had been incomplete.

We found that Administrator Murphys testimony before the House Appropriations Committee, Financial Services and General Government Subcommittee on April 17, 2018, was incomplete and may have left the misleading impression that she had no discussions with the President or senior White House officials in the decision-making process about the project, the IG said in a report in August.

Democrats accuse Murphy in their letter of concealing valuable information from Congress.

Your meetings with the White House came to light only after direct evidence emerged, including a photograph of you meeting with President Trump in the Oval Office, along with other White House, Justice Department, and FBI officials, the Democrats wrote in the letter Thursday.

Democrats on the committee argue that Trump had a clear interest in the FBI property being developed before he was President, but after he became President and was not allowed to invest in the project, his interest became ensuring no other developer could buy the property, convert it and compete with the Trump hotel.

Many years before becoming President, Donald Trump expressed interest in the FBI headquarters moving out of Washington, D.C. so he could acquire the land on Pennsylvania Avenue and redevelop the property, which is directly across the street from the Trump International Hotel. However, after he was sworn in as Presidentand became ineligible as a federal employee to obtain the propertyhe reportedly became dead opposed to the government selling the property, which would have allowed commercial developers to compete directly with the Trump Hotel, Cummings and his colleagues wrote.

The bigger fuckup here is assuming that quarantining old old people would accomplish a goddamn thing, when the staff isn't also quarantined.

Yes and that was the case where I live as well. A lot of the homes here are run by the same company (not as in NY necessarily but the same singular entity owns/runs multiple homes), and obviously also perpetually understaffed, so they were sending the same employees to multiple locations which led to outbreaks in basically all of them.

And of course another problem is that they can't even properly isolate the patients as well because they're filled to capacity.

https://www.businessinsider.com/mccarthy-make-trump-visit-shows-his-enduring-gop-control-2021-1

In the wake of the deadly Capitol riot, it seemed President Donald Trump's brand was toxic.

Even the usually staunchly loyal Rep. Kevin McCarthy, the House minority leader, said Trump bore responsibility for the violence. Ten Republicans, though not McCarthy, voted with Democrats to make Trump the only US president impeached twice.

Three weeks later, it's a very different story.

In a tacit acknowledgement that Trump retains his status as the GOP kingmaker, McCarthy on Thursday visited Trump in his postpresidential home in Florida.

A statement from McCarthy's office said the two discussed how the Republican Party could win back Congress in 2022.

https://twitter.com/edokeefe/status/1354884305827328002

Contradicting opinion polls, Trump's new Save America PAC boasted after the meeting that "President Trump's popularity has never been stronger than it is today, and his endorsement means more than perhaps any endorsement at any time."

Trump had vented to aides about McCarthy initially blaming him for the riot, Reuters reported.

This apparently prompted McCarthy earlier in the week to reverse his claim, telling reporters Monday that he didn't believe the president provoked the riot in a speech to supporters before violence.

McCarthy shifted his stance to say that "everyone across the country" was responsible.

He's not the only senior Republican whose tone has changed. Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell initially blamed Trump and signaled he was open to convicting him in an impeachment trial. He was said to be determined to rid the party of Trump's influence.

But on Wednesday, McConnell voted with most of his GOP Senate colleagues against having a Senate impeachment trial. The move failed, with Democrats and five GOP senators voting to have the trial.

The prospect of Trump's conviction in an impeachment trial, which could be followed by another vote to bar him from future public office, looks increasingly remote.

The abrupt shift comes with polls showing the hold Trump still has over the party's grassroots.

A poll by Morning Consult this week found that Trump's popularity among Republicans while below all-time highs had bounced back since the riot.

Of the Republican voters polled Saturday to Monday, 81% said they held a favorable view of the former president, a rise from a 76% low in mid-January, while 75% said they disapproved of his impeachment.

Trump has dangled the prospect of starting a new party that could split the GOP vote and leave the task of winning back Congress in the midterms all but impossible. It's most likely another factor in the thinking of GOP leaders.

Speaking on NBC, former GOP Rep. Carlos Curbelo on Sunday spelled out the dilemma facing the party: a Trump wing, which he said wanted "to purge those who have stood up to the president's lies," and an establishment wing seeking to purge Trump.

"Right now," he said, "it's clear that the Trump wing is dominant."

On March 10, 2007, Khalid Sheikh Mohammed claimed responsibility, before his Combatant Status Review Tribunal at Guantanamo Bay, for the murder of Daniel Pearl.[37] He is an alleged Al Qaeda operative reported to be third in command under Osama bin Laden, mastermind of the 2001 attacks. He claimed to have beheaded Pearl.[38] In a confession read during his Tribunal hearing, Khalid Sheikh Mohammed said, "I decapitated with my blessed right hand the head of the American Jew Daniel Pearl, in the city of Karachi, Pakistan.[39]" This confession repeated word for word the phrasing leaked in 2002 from his interrogation at a CIA black site interrogation center.[40]

On March 19, 2007, Ahmed Omar Saeed Sheikh's lawyers cited Khalid Sheikh Mohammed's confession as part of an appeal in defense of their client.[39][41] They said they had always acknowledged that their client played a role in Pearl's murder, but they had argued that Khalid Sheikh Mohammed was the actual murderer. They plan to feature Mohammed's confession as central in their appeal of their client's death sentence.

According to an investigative report published in January 2011 by Georgetown University, the Federal Bureau of Investigation used vein matching to determine that the perpetrator in the video of the killing of Pearl was most likely Mohammed, identifying him through a "bulging vein" running across his hand that was visible in the video.[42] Federal officials had been concerned that Mohammed's confession obtained through waterboarding would not hold up in court. They intended to use this forensic evidence to bolster their case that he had murdered Pearl.

It's widely acknowledged that Mr Sheikh first handed himself over to Pakistan's powerful intelligence services. However, police and prosecutors attempted to gloss over that, and instead, in spite of overwhelming evidence to the contrary, claimed he had been arrested a week later, wandering around Karachi airport.

What's more, evidence began to emerge that Mr Sheikh had not physically carried out the murder himself. Instead, it's now thought a senior al-Qaeda operative currently in Guantanamo Bay, Khalid Sheikh Mohammed (no relation), was responsible. The Pakistani authorities, however, deliberately discounted testimony suggesting that was the case.

Speaking on the condition of anonymity, two former leading figures in the investigation told the BBC of their frustration at how it had been handled. One said the decision to try and brush over discrepancies in the timeline, and ignore evidence suggesting Mr Sheikh was not present at the time of the murder, undermined the rest of the case, even though they believed it was clear he had orchestrated the abduction.

Journalist Asra Nomani, a close friend of Daniel Pearl's, who was with him in Karachi before the abduction, led an in-depth investigation into the incident, in conjunction with Georgetown University. Their work substantiated claims that Khalid Sheikh Mohammed had carried out the beheading, but she believes that Omar Sheikh should remain in prison. "Omar Sheikh is the man responsible for Danny's kidnapping, and he is the man who set up the circumstances so that Danny was ultimately murdered," she told the BBC.

https://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/americas/us-politics/marjorie-taylor-greene-omar-tlaib-bible-b1793806.html

Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene, a QAnon-supporting Republican who is known for pushing conspiracy theories and making racists comments, previously tried to force Ilhan Omar and Rashida Tlaib to retake their congressional oaths on the Bible.

Video footage surfaced on Wednesday of Ms Greene walking through the halls of Congress prior to being elected as a Georgia representative.

In the footage, she was claiming that Ms Omar and Ms Tlaib were illegitimate Democratic representatives because they took their oaths of office on the Quran instead of the Bible.

Were going to explain about how you cant swear in on the Quran, Ms Greene said in the footage. Were going to have the Bible and ask them if they would swear in on the Bible I think thats important.

Someone off-camera then told Ms Greene that she was infringing on the two representatives religion by asking them to take their oaths of office with the Bible instead of the Quran.

It wasnt a law yet at the time they swore in. I think at the time they swore in it wasnt passed, because it wouldnt pass in a Republican-controlled ... Ms Greene said. So theyre not really official, I dont think.

What she was insinuating in that video was that there was some law that required all members of Congress to be sworn in on the Bible. At the time of Ms Omar and Ms Tlaibs ceremonies, Ms Greene claimed, there was no law allowing them to use a Quran over the Bible.

This position has been repeated in recent years by other fringe members of the Republican party, and its inaccurate.

There has never been a law in United States history that requires an elected official of the country to take the oath of office with a Bible or any other religious text. The United States Constitution actually states "no religious test shall ever be required as a qualification to any office or public trust under the United States. Why does the Constitution specifically say this? The Framers of the Constitution valued the separation of church versus state.

Four presidents and several members of Congress have been sworn in without the use of a Bible.

The resurfaced video comes after a CNN KFile report revealed that Ms Greene has filled her social media feed with several extremist viewpoints in recent years before she was elected to office in November.

In a January 2019 Facebook post, Ms Greene liked a comment advocating a bullet to the head for House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, according to a screenshot shared by CNN.

Another post from April 2018 involved a commenter asking, Now do we get to hang them ?? when speaking about Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton. Ms Greene responded: Stage is being set. Players are being put in place. We must be patient. This must be done perfectly or liberal judges would let them off.

She did not denounce the suggestion of executing the two political figures.

On Twitter, Mrs Clinton shared the report of the representatives past social media activity and said: This woman should be on a watch list. Not in Congress.

Ms Greene took to Twitter to defend herself after the CNN report was published.

Over the years, Ive had teams of people manage my pages. Many posts have been liked. Many posts have been shared. Some did not represent my views, she wrote.

She added that Facebook posts from random users were being used to try and cancel me and silence my voice.

But these werent the only instances where Ms Greene exhibited extremist behaviour or promoted conspiracy theories.

Previously, Ms Greene has claimed the Parkland shooting was staged and that there are Democratic lawmakers in Congress who participate in child abuse. The representative was also vocally supportive of former President Donald Trumps baseless claims that he won the 2020 presidential election.

Ms Greenes statements on Twitter have caused her to be temporarily banned from the social media site and lawmakers are now calling for her removal from office.

Republican House leader Kevin McCarthy has revealed he would be speaking to Ms Greene following the recent reports of her social media activity.

These comments are deeply disturbing and Leader McCarthy plans to have a conversation with the Congresswoman about them, Mark Bednar, a spokesperson for Mr McCarthy, told Axios.

https://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/nfl/2021/01/27/chad-wheeler-seattle-seahawks-arrest/4274187001/

Seattle Seahawks offensive lineman Chad Wheeler was arrested on suspicion of felony domestic violence and booked into the King County Jail in Seattle on Saturday, according to jail records. He was released on $400,000 bond Tuesday morning, jail records show.

According to a Kent (Washington) Police Department report obtained by The Seattle Times, a woman called 911 following a "physical fight" with her boyfriend and said that she was being "killed." The report noted that the alleged victim was bleeding and suffered a dislocated arm when police arrived before being taken to the local hospital to treat injuries.

In a statement provided to The Seattle Times, the Seahawks said: "We are aware of the situation and still gathering information."

According to the report obtained by The Times, Wheeler initially was uncooperative before being detained. He had picked the lock of the bathroom door where the alleged victim was hiding and was standing beside her when police arrived at the scene, the report stated.

In the police report, the alleged victim claimed Wheeler strangled her before she lost consciousness after she did not bow to him like Wheeler requested. The alleged victim claimed Wheeler told her upon regaining consciousness, "Wow, you're alive?"

Wheeler, a restricted free agent who was a backup offensive linemanlayed in five games for Seattle in 2020. The 6-7, 310-pound lineman played college football at USC and went undrafted before playing in 2017 and 2018 with the New York Giants.

It was not clear Wednesday morning whether Wheeler had legal representation.

There's a photo of her in the hospital on Twitter but I'm not entirely sure I can post it.
