Once this gets going the transformation can happen in just a few years. It can happen much faster than any of the models being put out by climate scientists. I think we are very close. The market is acting that way at least (with Tesla basically being comparable in value to all other car manufacturers combined).

Notice the 80% decline over a 10 year period. This is why I haven't invested in BP (otherwise it would be screaming buy to me). I believe.

Yeah, I'm pretty convinced the free market is going to end the global warming problem on Earth, not government or international regulations. Once the cost of green energy gets below the cost of fossil fuel extraction, we are looking at a whale oil level extinction event for fossil fuels.

I feel like this would be very controversial:

When you're talking math and science there IS (usually) a hard answer. 2+2 = 4 and any other answer is incorrect. Is she doing something like?
Q1) 2+2 =
A1) Something less than 2
A2) Some thing more than 2

Because that would be bizarre to me. I know my example is math rather than science but still...I think I'd need an example of how this would work.

In principle this is good, but it is very easy to end up with Trump after students are given this kind of education. Trump is basically the embodiment of the worldview that objective truth does not exist, only subjective feelings. Be careful what you wish for.

Bloomberg has it as expected to close in 2nd Quarter 2021. The post-merger ticker will be ME, which I like - it's simple and catchy. I actually think there is significant value in C3.AI getting the ticker symbol AI - if there was no company, that ticker symbol alone would have a lot of value.

This next Trump lawyer is better, he's coherent and what he's saying is correct and makes sense. But, all he's saying is that the impeachment trial needs to be fair and Trump deserves due process. I don't think anyone disagreed with that.

Oh, now I see where he's going with this. He argues Trump was entitled to all the due process of a full trial in the House. That's not how it works. Defendants are not entitled to defend themselves before a grand jury. That's what the trial is for....

Edit: There he goes again. There was no classical Greek Republic. Greece was not unified back then. So there is no way the Greek Republic could have collapsed because they did something like impeaching their leader.

At this point I'm not sure the commissions are such a bad thing. At least then you can be more confident your trades are being executed at fair prices. If you aren't a day trader, there aren't that many trades anyway. I think I've had something like 2 true day trades (where the same stock is bought and sold in the same day) in a year.

I would say that gold and silver have the same characteristic where most of their value comes from people collectively assigning them value. Fiat currency definitely has that characteristic. But, gold and silver have been valuable for thousands of years, and that's because people genuinely believe it is valuable, so they are willing to hold it.

It's the system that's bad. In the apple tree analogy, the tree itself is bad, from the roots up. ACAB still misses the point because it makes it sound like all the fruit just happens to be bad, without acknowledging the problems with the tree. And it is inflammatory because it pins the blame on individual police officers, many of whom are decent people, and by and large are not super powerful or rich.

People need to understand how deep the rot goes - far beyond individual officers. Look at police chiefs, mayors, district attorneys, attorneys general, politicians, and even voters with blinders on as to how police treat other people in other places.

I remember Airbnb and Doordash being ridiculously overvalued so I'm surprised anyone made money there. I may have to check the day 1 patterns. Curious if there was a big dip after the first hour or so before they went back up.

AirBNB is up quite a lot from where it opened. My recollection is that no one in this topic bought Doordash.

This topic had quite a negative experience with the AirBNB and Doordash IPOs a little while ago. Not that anyone lost money - I think we all made money. But the way the price pretty much doubled from the "IPO price" to the first trade accessible to the general public the next morning was just unfair. If you can somehow buy the IPO shares from the company, that's gotta be the easiest way to make money in the stock market. Nothing is guaranteed but those seem to go up most of the time, and often by a lot.

I also plan to buy the Coinbase IPO. I think they've got a great business model and it's a good way to get more exposure to crypto.

The modern way of paying dividends is to buy back stock. Because that one isn't taxable, or if the shareholder sells, it is often taxed at the long-term capital gains rate.

While we no longer grant outright monopolies like the East India Company enjoyed, there are clearly significant advantages to the corporate form. The most important of which is that the shareholders have limited liability. Moreover, double taxation isn't an issue for many of our largest and most successful corporations because they don't pay dividends anyway.

I think it makes a lot more sense to make dividends tax-free than to not tax corporations.

Responding to Cly from the last topic, my current allocation is:

Cash 11%
Crypto 6%
Stocks 83%

I don't own any ETFs, mostly because I perceive them as boring. A big reason for doing this for me is the fun of picking stocks myself, and being right or wrong. Also, I don't normally have this high an allocation for cash, but I just sold some stocks the past couple days and haven't reinvested them yet. Usually, I like to keep cash at a level enough to cover immediate expenses and that's it.

I do have some other investments managed by other people, like a 401k, which I basically try not to think about or include in allocation thoughts.
