red sox 777 02/10/21 4:59:15 PM #209 | Jakyl25 posted... Well its probably already too late for that to happen so oh well Once this gets going the transformation can happen in just a few years. It can happen much faster than any of the models being put out by climate scientists. I think we are very close. The market is acting that way at least (with Tesla basically being comparable in value to all other car manufacturers combined). https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Whale_oil#/media/File:US_Whale_Oil_and_Sperm_Oil_Imports_(1805-1905).jpg Notice the 80% decline over a 10 year period. I feel like this would be very controversial: In principle this is good, but it is very easy to end up with Trump after students are given this kind of education. red sox 777 02/09/21 4:22:02 PM #149 | This next Trump lawyer is better, he's coherent and what he's saying is correct and makes sense. But, all he's saying is that the impeachment trial needs to be fair and Trump deserves due process. I don't think anyone disagreed with that. Oh, now I see where he's going with this. He argues Trump was entitled to all the due process of a full trial in the House. That's not how it works. Defendants are not entitled to defend themselves before a grand jury. red sox 777 02/07/21 1:33:23 PM #496 | It's the system that's bad. In the apple tree analogy, the tree itself is bad, from the roots up. ACAB still misses the point because it makes it sound like all the fruit just happens to be bad, without acknowledging the problems with the tree. And it is inflammatory because it pins the blame on individual police officers, many of whom are decent people, and by and large are not super powerful or rich. People need to understand how deep the rot goes - far beyond individual officers. Look at police chiefs, mayors, district attorneys, attorneys general, politicians, and even voters with blinders on as to how police treat other people in other places. --- September 1, 2003; November 4, 2007; September 2, 2013 Congratulations to DP Oblivion in the Guru Contest! |

red sox 777 02/05/21 10:35:14 PM #178 | This topic had quite a negative experience with the AirBNB and Doordash IPOs a little while ago. Not that anyone lost money - I think we all made money. But the way the price pretty much doubled from the "IPO price" to the first trade accessible to the general public the next morning was just unfair. If you can somehow buy the IPO shares from the company, that's gotta be the easiest way to make money in the stock market. Nothing is guaranteed but those seem to go up most of the time, and often by a lot. I also plan to buy the Coinbase IPO. red sox 777 02/05/21 2:49:12 PM #338 | While we no longer grant outright monopolies like the East India Company enjoyed, there are clearly significant advantages to the corporate form. The most important of which is that the shareholders have limited liability. Moreover, double taxation isn't an issue for many of our largest and most successful corporations because they don't pay dividends anyway. A big reason for doing this for me is the fun of picking stocks myself, and being right or wrong. Also, I don't normally have this high an allocation for cash, but I just sold some stocks the past couple days and haven't reinvested them yet. Usually, I like to keep cash at a level enough to cover immediate expenses and that's it. I do have some other investments managed by other people, like a 401k, which I basically try not to think about or include in allocation thoughts. --- September 1, 2003; November 4, 2007; September 2, 2013 Congratulations to DP Oblivion in the Guru Contest! |
