The bigger issue with Covid-19 though is the after effects. Generally after you recover from the flu you're back to 100% in a few days. Covid though is showing to have after effects that are going to last the rest of people's lives.

holding an actual conversation requires more than 5 words. even oblivion NPCs use more than that.

you could potentially get by with that many words, but you would have to use lots of body language as well

tbh I don't care that much about combat in games in general. as long as there's not too much of it and the rest of the game is good, I'm more or less fine.

Hollow Knight is a good example: it has a good combat system, though I didn't like it nearly as much as the exploration or the platforming

you used French as an example, so that's what I'm using here.

if you can go to Montreal and talk to people in French without people talking back to you in English, you can speak and understand it pretty fluently. the next level beyond that would be something like opening a bank account in French.

if you can read an adult fiction story or some sort of long news article in French without using a dictionary, you can read it pretty fluently. the next level beyond that would be something like reading a manual for some kind of complicated equipment

and I don't see what the "actual risk" is. if you make an investment to make a profit, the risk is that your investment is not profitable. what is the risk that you are describing that they are taking on, other than renting places no longer being profitable?

again, they are not providing a service. please do not characterize it as such; it is inaccurate.

if the government wants to provide a "free" alternative for this "basic human need", then landlords can be fucked and can make their money elsewhere. but as long as people use their property (you can call this a service, or something else, if you want, doesn't matter), than they should get paid the agreed upon rates.

it does matter. the money that they make is contingent only on owning the building, not on actually doing anything.

real estate is a private business venture. it is an investment. if they want to treat it as an investment, they need to accept the risk of not making money on it. or even *gasp* losing money on it

they do not make money by providing a service; they make money by owning the building. housing is a basic human need which they are treating it as a way to make money (i.e. an investment).

so I will state my question again: why do you think they are entitled to receive returns on their investment regardless of any external circumstances?

yeah, some landlords perform some labour in addition to owning the building, but that isn't actually relevant to the position -- the money they make is not contingent on performing that labour

I agree that owning property and doing no work is not a job under pretty much any reasonable definition of 'job'. If there is regular maintenance, then i would argue the job is property management moreso than landlording, but that is kind of just semantics.

it's not semantics though. managing the property is a job, but it's often outsourced to another person, meaning that it's not inherent to owning the building.
