Aura is one of the most broken things in a FF game. My first instinct was to pick haste, but Aura-Limit Break becomes essentially the only rational damage dealing strategy because you don't have to sit through turns or GF animations, it's just big damage at will, quickly.

AB5 was not passed to protect gig workers. It was passed to protect the governments taxi rackets, which ride sharing companies had bypassed as they do not need a taxi license to operate.

State governments run these rackets for all kinds of occupations. You pay money to the government to get a license required to work, and in return they limit the supply. This is why Taxi companies were able to charge such high prices, the government was purposely limiting competition.

If you don't believe me check out the long list of exemptions for AB5. Why is an uber driver not considered a gig worker, but a manicurist is? Because one requires a license and the other doesn't. You pay to play.

I don't think there's been a single anti-worker move you haven't supported on these boards for one.

Two, as I said, I'm not here to defend AB5. Notice how I didn't. I'm anti Prop 22 and anti-firing workers and replacing them with workers with less pay, less bargaining power, and less protections.

Three, I don't care about your libertarian anti-licensing crusade, whether you're right or wrong. You're certainly animated by that and not any concern for workers.

Anyone who thinks that bill was passed in good faith to help workers does not understand what is happening here.

I'm not here to defend AB5 or any other bill in a state so captured by and reliant on so many different industries. I'm here to say that the public was captured by misinformation and money from the tech industry and workers will feel the pain by being downgraded and stripped of protections in the interest of profit.

Businesses want plentiful, interchangeable, replaceable, low cost labor, regardless of sector, and the people of California voted to become that.

The law was changed explicitly TO try to redefine them as employees. That was AB5. Are you saying that California explicitly recognized gig workers as company employees prior to ab5?

AB5 was just codifying what the courts had already determined using preexisting employer-employee law.

The California Supreme Court had already decided several years prior that these types of gig workers were employees. AB5 made that into statutory law and specified that it meant that these workers were entitled to benefits and protections.

Prop 22 undid all of that.

If you honestly believe gig workers are "clearly" employees then there's really no discussion to be had because you fundamentally misunderstand (willingly or otherwise) gig work. Uber drivers can literally pick and choose their hours, their clients, where they work, etc. If they were employees all that would be set for them and they could be fired for not doing their job.

If you want me to say something about people who "dared" advocate for themselves, it's that they should be angry at Vons rather than trying to throw Uber drivers under the proverbial bus. Prop 22 didn't do this. Assembly Bill 5 (which prop 22 counters) is only about a year old. Uber launched in CA a decade ago. That means from 2011 until August 2019 Vons could have used gig workers but they didn't. Laying their actions on the prop is propaganda.

Well I am a labor attorney that researches and litigates employer-employee classification law and under California law, they absolutely are employees. That's why the courts said that they were and why the law had to be changed to make them not employees. It's pretty cut and dried.

I agree that they should be angry at Vons for firing them. However, Prop 22 absolutely did this because if not for that prop, Vons would have had no incentive to do this because both the gig workers and the existing drivers would have been employees. The prop has clearly created two classes of workers and incentivized employers to pay less when they were paying more before. That's bad for workers and good for companies.

No one is throwing Uber employees under the bus, other than Uber. Workers are being set against each other for the benefit of their employers. The employment relationship is almost infinitely varied in terms of the level of control exercised by employers and autonomy exercised by employees. If it benefitted the companies, they would have argued that the relationship of Uber to employees fit under the umbrella of the employer-employee relationship. They didn't because it wasn't in their interest, not because it didn't fit.

Ah you're right. I couldn't remember and it's tough to tell because of how heavily loaded this article is in terms of biased language. As far as I can see online all the proposition literally does is acknowledge that app based drivers are contractors not employees, yet this article literally says that it "gutted worker protections." Doesn't help that the site is just an embedded medium page pretending to be a real news site which doesn't even have its own page on media bias fact check.

That's not true at all, it did a lot of other stuff. And the industry funded prop was necessary because those workers were clearly employees under existing law.

Now we see the consequences, less security and unemployment for workers who dared to advocate for themselves. You don't have anything to say about those workers being immediately replaced with workers without power or benefits?

It's easy to get worked up about the injustice and imbalance of the criminal justice system rather than focusing on innocence or guilty. You focus on the insane charges, racial injustice, class injustice, the relative power of prosecutors and police vs defendants and defense attorneys, etc and on securing due process and the least worst outcome for the defendant in the face of all that.

I've learned that regardless of guilt or innocence, when the criminal justice system sets its sights on you, you're 95% of the way to being screwed, your life is already permanently worse. When we look back on criminal justice systems from past eras and criticize them for using moon logic and being blatantly unfair, just know that the same thing applies 10000% right now and for the foreseeable future.

I'm tired of this idea that people are criticizing him for a mere "difference of opinion" like it's the difference between preferring Pepsi or Coke. Political views and policy stances matter. They matter a whole hell of a lot. They are the difference between life and death, prosperity and poverty for a lot of people.

He was an elected official for the party that is blocking Covid relief, blocked Covid response, and turned all anti-pandemic measures into a culture war issue. This lead to the unnecessary deaths of hundreds of thousands and poverty for millions of others. Because of that difference of opinion.

This person didn't deserve to die, his young children and his wife shouldn't have to bear losing him, but his political stances and his political party have subjected countless Americans to that very fate and no one should apologize for recognizing that when it happens to him.
