No. This is a very important distinction. Reform is things like requiring more minority officers in schools or requiring them to take bias training or banning chokeholds. Defunding is going to the area in the budget that authorizes and funds cops in schools and removing that so there won't be cops in schools. And then reallocating those funds to the things that tend to lead to violence and unsafe situations in school to address those instead. Those are two very different things.

One assumes the legitimacy of police presence and a continued role where the reform is intended to cement that legitimacy. The other does not assume that legitimacy and assumes other methods will be more legitimate and more effective.

The guy won two terms and left office with a 60% approval rating. He is certainly not a failure in a political or electoral sense.

This is the issue with the left and goes into this echo-chamber stuff I've spoken about before.

He didn't address any of the underlying social and economic issues that led to Trump and the Democratic Party lost power nationwide under his watch. Those are significant failures. Winning elections is a personal achievement, but it's supposed to be a means to an end, not the end itself. The end is policy that changes people's lives for the better.

For example, in defending this phrase a bit earlier in the year, ilhan omar said her vision of what getting rid of the mn police department meant was dismantling it and reconstituting it by 'doing what San Fransisco did.' referring to attempts to limit what kind of incidents officers respond to. I mean that's great but that's the equivalent of getting rid of ICE and calling it something else. It's hardly transformative; 'reform the police' seems more accurate for that type of policy view.

It doesn't change that it seriously hurts the movement though. "Reform the police" could have got many behind it, as 99% of politicians don't want to upset others by "ending crime prevention" as supporting defund police would come across.

Their goal is to de-entrench the police and prove that there are better ways to keep the public safe. Obfuscating their message takes them further away from that goal because people are even taking "Defund the Police" to mean keep the police and give them more money.

The goal is to introduce a fundamental shift in how people think of public safety and what police actually do, not stating what they want just reinforces the idea that it's unthinkable or impossible.

The people they police also have to make split second decisions, often in disorienting situations and when receiving conflicting or impossible directions. The police don't seem to have much empathy for the public, while they expect infinite empathy from us.

Biden will get all the hate for his DoJ going after Trump anyway. Does anyone seriously think a single Trump supporter will care about or be aware of the DoJ's independence? The only two options for this administration are being perceived as going after Trump or not going after him.

The only way to avoid that while still holding him accountable is to let the states handle it, but you'll still have the cultists screaming about deep state conspiracies and oppression and you'll still have the media talk about nothing else.

When people talk about not being racially divisive, not talking about abortion, not talking about trans rights in order to avoid being seen as socially radical and to get socially conservative people on board, or when they say the Democrats should focus on economic populism and drop the social issues, is that meaningfully different?

No one thinks of themselves as not caring about minorities and most certainly wouldn't admit it. But many people consider civil rights issues "special interests" or otherwise secondary and just so happen to find the issues of inequality in society that affect them to be the ones worthy of attention.

Have you considered that this is exactly what people are already doing and is why spread is so common in gyms? People assuming they're being clever when what they're actually doing is breathing heavily, indoors, with air conditioning, and surrounded by other people doing the same?

If it isn't, gyms shouldn't be open at all then. Which they probably shouldn't be. Human beings have been exercising without gyms for almost all of human history.

So pick your poison. Wear a mask or exercise outside or in your own home. There's no third option here if you don't want to kill people and destroy gyms long term.

Countries and states that implemented lockdowns crippled the growth of their economies, many of those businesses and jobs are never coming back. In what way are you saving someones life if they are in one of the low risk demographics for COVID-19 if you are killing off their source of income by dubbing their business or job non-essential? Breaking someones legs and giving them a band aid in the form of a stimulus check (that is going to be coming at their expense and future if they are a Millennial or Zoomer) is a solution to a problem that the Government created in the first place by making billions of people unemployed and broke. A Depression on top of a pandemic would simply be adding more fuel to the fire.

Dude, 80 percent of COVID spread comes from gyms, restaraunts/bars, and churches. All of those are non-essential and should be shut down until there is essentially no community spread. We can afford to pay those people to stay home because we essentially can't afford not to. The cost of not doing so is thousands and thousands of lives AND a crippled economy that won't recover.

You either give these indoor based businesses a chance to recover by getting control of the virus or you slowly bleed them to death and kill industries permanently once they are associated with sickness and death.
