The Tsar Bomba is terrifying, but what always bothered me was the fact that we made an air-to-air nuclear missile.

What did we know about that was flying that would require a nuclear missile to knock it out of the air?

The AIR-2 Genie unguided rocket was equipped with a very small 1.5 kt warhead. It was designed to be fired into middle of a formation of Soviet strategic bombers.

There was also the AIM-26 Falcon, which was a guided air-to-air missile. It carried the same warhead as the Davy Crockett recoilless rifle, with a yield of only 250 tons. Guided missiles were extremely inaccurate at the time, and using a nuclear warhead ensured a high kill probability against Soviet bombers.

The real question is who does the Wedge belong to?

Does it belong to Pennsylvania because it was beyond the Twelve-Mile Circle, as indicated in this 1989 USGS map?

Or does it belong to Delaware because it was never intended for Pennsylvania to go below the northern border of Maryland?

(It cannot belong to Maryland because it is east of the north line of the Mason-Dixon)

In 1921 Pennsylvania and Delaware agreed that this small sliver of land should belong to Delaware.

Oh, I forgot, I've also dialed 911 a few times to test the phone system after an install. You explain to the operator that you are testing a new phone system and ask several questions such as what phone number and address they are seeing and if you reached the correct call center. The phone system can't be certified ready for use otherwise.

KeePass. LastPass and its ilk are more convenient, but to me it seems like a perfect target for hackers, one successful intrusion and you have EVERYTHING. KeePass keeps its encrypted database local. This means I have to copy it to my phone every time I make a change, and you have to be very careful about maintaining backups, but I think it's worth it for the increased security.

And it's totally free.

I called 911 a couple times when my grandmother had a bad insulin reaction. In one instance her blood sugar registered only 12. (Normal is 80-130, most people pass out at 20).

I've called 911 when there was a car accident right in front of me and one of the vehicles started smoking (didn't catch fire, though), and a couple times to report dangerous debris in the road.

I've called the Sheriff's non-emergency number several times, when our Great Dane got stuck in a tree, when a strange vehicle with non-local plates was parked in my driveway for several hours with no sign of the driver, and when I found several cattle wandering around loose.

If you want something totally cheesy, there's always Splinter of the Mind's Eye. It was written to be a low-budget sequel to Star Wars in case the first movie was a bust. Since it broke box office records, a different, big-budget script was used instead for the sequel.

Thanksgiving dinner isn't really that expensive if you do the cooking yourself. Turkeys are quite inexpensive, especially around the Holidays, often under 50 cents a pound. I cook the turkey on top of a bed of potatoes (cheap), carrots (cheap), and onions (cheap). A box or bag of stuffing is usually about $1-2 each. A can of green beans, a can of cream of mushroom soup, and a bag of french fried onions is probably under $5. A package of rolls is about $2-5, depending on the kind. I make my own cranberry sauce, a bag of cranberries is usually about $3.

Now TIME, that's where a Thanksgiving dinner gets expensive. I brine my turkey so I have to start thawing the turkey at least a week before Thanksgiving, and I start the brine on Tuesday.

I do what I can. I've replaced light fixtures, outlets, and switches and run ethernet cable inside the house, and added new light fixtures and circuit breakers and run Romex and conduit in the garage and barn. I've replaced the kitchen sink and the fixtures in the kitchen and bathroom sinks, and I've replaced a leaky toilet flapper. I installed a drain pipe to carry water from a badly placed gutter away from the house. I hooked up all the major appliances in the house except the hot water heater and the furnace/air conditioner. I built a new door for the barn and a gate for the barnyard, I built a few shelters for the goats and the horse, and I've repaired damaged sections of fence. And of course I set up the network, which is surprisingly complex (VPN router, 5 switches, wireless bridge, and 3 WiFi access points, plus a network printer, NAS, VoIP, and a light controller).

I'm not about to try doing plumbing, the wiring inside the walls, the air conditioner, or the water heater.

This paper in particular is quite interesting. It shows that criminal behavior is highest at the end of the month, when food stamp benefits have run out, and lowest at the beginning of the month when food stamps, welfare and other benefits are issued. Just staggering the issuing of SNAP benefits over multiple days in the month so people don't run out of food reduced grocery store thefts by 32%!

There would be fewer people forced to turn to crime because of poverty. I didn't say we could completely get rid of the police. Even the rich commit crimes. But statistics show that employment, lower rates of poverty, and better access to healthcare all correspond with lower crime rates.

50 Megatons, though the bomb design could theoretically have exceed 100 Mt with a U-238 fusion tamper instead of the lead tamper that was installed.

All the buildings in a village 55 km away were obliterated, and wooden houses over 100 km away were destroyed. The heat from the explosion would have caused third-degree burns to exposed flesh 100 km away. Windows were broken as far as Norway and Finland. The fireball was visible from 1000 km away. The mushroom cloud reached 67 km in height, past the stratosphere and into the mesosphere. Despite being detonated 4 km above the ground, it still created a magnitude 5.0 earthquake.

Here's what the bomb would have done if it had detonated over the city of Paris. The yellow circle is the size of the fireball and the red circle is the area of total destruction.

The bomb was highly impractical, however, as it was 8 meters long and weighed 27,000 kg. It was far too large for a missile, and the only aircraft capable of carrying it was a heavily modified bomber that had its bomb bay doors and most of its fuel tanks removed so its range was extremely limited. Even with a parachute to slow the bomb's decent, the bomber was only given a 50% chance of surviving.

Defunding the police doesn't mean getting rid of them, but taking the money that's currently being spent on police and spending on stuff to eliminate the need for police, like job training, low income housing, treatment for drug addiction, and mental health services.

And while we're at it, how about defunding the military as well. We currently spend over 1/2 the discretionary budget on the military, more money than the next 12 largest militaries combined. If we cut the military budget in half we'd still spend more than the next 4 largest militaries combined, and think about all the money we could pour into things like education and scientific research.
