There would be fewer people forced to turn to crime because of poverty. I didn't say we could completely get rid of the police. Even the rich commit crimes. But statistics show that employment, lower rates of poverty, and better access to healthcare all correspond with lower crime rates.

This paper in particular is quite interesting. It shows that criminal behavior is highest at the end of the month, when food stamp benefits have run out, and lowest at the beginning of the month when food stamps, welfare and other benefits are issued. Just staggering the issuing of SNAP benefits over multiple days in the month so people don't run out of food reduced grocery store thefts by 32%!
