You do realize that character arcs and personality traits aren't necessarily disjointed from one another, right? Traits can be developed from character arcs.

Sure. But if literally nothing about your already immensely bland character is seperated from the hackneyed melodramatic scenarios you threw them into for the sake of it. Then your character sucks.

This is why Marcus Holloway was much better recieved than Aiden Pearce. He was actually well rounded.

This is why RDR2 devoted entire optional missions to doing things like Fishing or playing Dominos while people talked about shit that had nothing to do with the main narrative.

Did you know Bill was a Free Mason? And kicked out of the army for being gay?
Did you know Ellie played guitar and was gay? Yes because the game revolves around it. There is literally no thought whatsoever put into the characters beyond "then they capture Ellie and put her a room 5 steps away from her gear." "they then capture Abby and put her in a room 5 steps away from her gear!" trope to trope. Anything in the plot is put in to force those scenarios.

There is nothing but melodrama. Slitting a pregnant woman's throat isn't deep because it's sad. Especially when the pregnant woman is a block of wood. The random number Black Mages in FF9 learning that their friends and loved ones "Stop" and not understanding what that means was sadder because some actual thought was put into it, they were relatable people acting in a belieable way forced to come to terms with harsh realities and they were background NPCs just adding worldbuilding to a larger narrative. It wasn't just drama from another movie shoved in for the sake of it before another trope.

Silent Hills would have sucked and it's cancelation was possibly the best thing that could have happened to the horror Genre. Look at RE7

Nope.

Not exaggeration or hyperbole, I'm completely serious.

Neither character has an arc, neither is likable, neither is well rounded. They are just placeholders to hit the next trope of the plot.

Tell me one thing or personality trait about Ellie or Abby that has no bearing on the plot or tropes of the game?

Only 1 I can think of is that Abby doesn't like video games.

It's pretty clear close to zero thought was actually put into the creation of either character. Other than as vessals to push set-pieces. Which is fine in a dumb game like Tomb Raider Legend but in a game that takes itself seriously, it's just trite writing.

Pretty much all the ones I just listed.

Also Silent Hill, FTL, RDR2, RDR1, Spec Ops the Line, The entire Fallout Series except maybe 3, Dragon Age Origins, All the God of War Games, Amnesia The Dark Descent, Broken Sword off the top of my head.

Pretty much the majority of WRPG or Adventure Games come to think of it.

Lesuiresuit Larry had more character depth than Ellie or Abby and was a deeply flawed but still likable protaganist who had a character arc.

Batman almost killed the entire Justice League by himself.

I can't remember why but I remember he did. He had plans to stop every hero incase they turned evil or got brainwashed. Then he tuned evil or got brainwashed and unleashed all his plans at once and single-handedly brought the entire league to it's knees.

Then Supes was like "Well you almost killed us all but here's some Kryptonite for some reason because you're so Kaiwai. Use that on me baby"

The story is built around emotion, not logic, which is the most human way to build a story. We all make decisions based on emotions.

Literally the fallacy David Cage uses to defend his games.

Writing shit that doesn't make sense as a vehicle to insert generic tropes we've seen 500 times before isn't "Emotional human story telling" it's just uninspired laziness.

It's the first game I've ever played that actively acknowledges and shows that EVERYONE is both good and bad.

Jeez you need to play more games.

Metro especially. The characters in that series actually have personalities. They're not just there to full a checklist for the next trope set-piece stolen from movies and TV shows and inserted in without reason.

According to the PS4, less than 9% of players have beaten the game with an S Rank. That includes Normal Diffculty and that's not S+. In fact less than 8% have beaten Hardcore mode at all on any rank

I don't count PC Data since people can just cheat so the Data is unreliable.

So let's guesstimate that what? Between 4-6% of RE2make players have beaten Hardcore with S+?

Yes because the story of Last of us 2 was so nuanced, complex and cerebral it was just so hard for the average man to comprehend it.

Wasn't like it was just a bunch of tropes and cliches taken from other works of art and slammed together without rhyme or reason as a bunch of bland characters do absolutely stupid decisions with absolutely no innovation whatsoever in gameplay or art-design or music...

Christ Thomas Was Alone had a better story and characters and was more innovative and that was a game for children about putting shapes in holes. Made largely by 1 guy.

Sadly the "we did them a favor " was a very common defense of slavery

From its inception in the US till about 1970

"We took them from ravenous uncivilized lands. Gave them food and clothes and sanitation, they were better off and should be more grateful!" was an unironic statement very popular in the South

Its only the past few decades were the "Lost Cause" myth defending the confederacy has changed into arguing that Slavery actually wasnt that bad and no one fought a war for it

I know people complained about the sidequests, but now only did I not mind them, I thought there was a perfect number to them. Simple quests that give you cool stuff and change small things later in the game.

They could have slapped in a mission board that autofills with quests and call it a day.
