I would frame this very differently. Grad students and postdocs are the workforce of the lab. It's uncommon for a PI to spend much time in the lab. But that doesn't mean that the relationship is exploitative. Usually your PI works with you to develop your skills, in lab work and writing. You also should be working toward work that literally has your name at the front of it.

Like, there are good lab environments and bad lab environments, but I would label your description as pretty misleading.

Typically you are either interviewing for a particular lab, or you do rotations, in which case you get the chance to scope out the lab environment.
Well, I graduated some time ago. 2003. The relationship may have changed - with the help of grad student unions, IMO.

I was also in the social sciences, which were extremely exploitative towards grad students.

Physics and the "hard sciences", or anything involving a lab, I am not an expert.

Unclear what you mean to convey in this post.
Grad students are seen by some professors as cheap labor. They (grad students) come to learn but some professors just want to use them to lighten their own workload.

Also, when you are assigned a professor to guide you through the program, find out how many Phds s/he has graduated. My first guy did like 3 in 13 years. Some professors are only interested in grad students who will grade papers and run sections for them..

Switched him out.

I am a historian/international relations guy by training. I don't know physics. But I know professors and grad school.

I don't know about other schools but I got into 3 Ivies.

Wherever you choose to go, go with the school offering the best financial package -unless there's a superstar professor you just want to work with - but again, the money will become an issue when you graduate.

Also, there is no "Ark of the Covenant" containing special knowledge that is only available at one school, but not another.

Take fellowships over loans and ask how long the average student takes to get through the program.

Find the best fit for you, and good luck.

After the 1994 World Cup final - in Pasadena - I watched approximately 75,000 people dance and samba (Brazil won against Italy) a mile to the Old Town Pasadena bars.

I was among those responsible to keep them safe. It was a scene that had to be seen to be believed. The joy amongst the people could be felt. Sure, they rooted for opposite teams but afterwards? The result was the result - they decided "good game" and "lets get shit cracking tonight".

When my shift was over, I partied my ass off.

what exactly is the ticketing structure like, for the olympics? do you buy a ticket to every event, or are you gated into certain events or buildings only with certain passes? it's such a long event.

i think just for the sheer volume, location, duration, and cost, the olympics wins this one for me.
Event by event. Or game by game depending on the sport.

Fat cats can buy the equivalent of a "season pass" but even that is limited. There's a lot of money to be made and the organizers want to make it.
