I read about people freezing to death and then I look at Google weather and it's 1 degrees Celsius and no snow accumulation...

  • There has been snow accumulation
  • It has gotten colder than 1 C
  • Texas is not at all prepared for weather like this

Yeah that's got to suck, that said if it's around -10 to 1 C, layer up and you should be good to go.

Hopefully you have some propane, you can bbq for food.

I've had no power for 48 hours, my apartment quickly fell to like 20 degrees

Today a water pipe ruptured and flooded the place with freezing water. and yes I was letting water out properly. In response to all the flooding, they just shut down water for the entire complex. Now those people don't have heat, electricity, or even water, and there is further freezing weather for the next few days. I'm only ok because I abandoned the apartment and drove to my friend who has power bc he lives next to a hospital.

So yes it's really that bad

Also not all texans have much winter clothing

As I understand it, the lack of power makes the cold more dangerous.

Disappointing how ignorant some of these comments are, atleast a dozen people confirmed dead and will probably find more after all said and done

Anywhere else and it probably wouldnt even count as a snow day. But their crumbling infrastructure does make this a serious problem.

It's not like the north where people are prepared for it. Theres probably like 1 person per neighborhood with the tools to deal with it, if that.

I suspect lots of people are burning shit in their backyards for warmth.

Edit: Serious question; how many people just went to the airport or something else just for warmth and food?

all of the hotels either had no power or had no vacancy (all of texas and anywhere before West of Baton Rouge, LA), I was thankful my boss let me call off today so I could make the drive to New Orleans. My apartment lost power yesterday at 6pm and I didn't trust the officials to have it it on/keep it on tomorrow so I made the decision to leave :( I just want to make it clear that it's not just Texas that endured this arctic storm, but it's only the state of Texas that failed its citizens. This is was self-imposed, not a natural disaster.

Idk how they would make it that far. I had to go without a decent meal until I reached Lafayette, LA because everything was shut down

Apparently El Paso, TX was spared because:

1. It's outside the system.

And...

2. El Paso got shutdown due to a similar winter storm in 2011 and the electric company that runs the city learned its lesson.
