Have you eaten many burgers like that yourself? The real answer is dopamine - eat a few of those and your brain will quickly work out it's a pretty solid source of all carbs, fats, proteins, even reasonably abundant in vitamins and minerals too. Low effort, high reward. If you haven't had one before, that same response wont quite be there yet.

But also the vast mix of tastes - burger, cheese and sauce all have that full rich umami taste, the slightly cooked bread sweetens things up a bit, the lettuce and onions keep it fresh and juicy, the kilogram of salt doesn't hurt either.

I dunno, the current trend this century is a rapid downturn in poverty, conflict and carbon emissions, and we're pretty near all those stereotypical future things, electric cars, AI automation, VR, Mars travel...
The next generation will either just keep that momentum going or go full conservative and mess it all up.

I read the study, and it seemed to conclude that the protests had two populations to them: those who stayed home, and those who attended the protests. The amount of people who stayed home was increased by the protests (those in this population did so for e.g. afraid of violence), and they saw a decrease in COVID-19 cases. The ones who attended the protests seemed to have increased cases of COVID-19, but these were "on net" the same of the ones that stayed home. The conclusion seemed to imply that the protests impacted the amount of COVID-19 cases in each of these populations differently, but on the whole, protesting counties still had the same number of cases as the control, non-protesting counties.

From the conclusion:

I would be interested to know if anyone else read the study and what their conclusions on the study were. I am not a scientist or economist by trade, so it would be good to know if I explained this correctly.
That's seems pretty spot on as a summary. Makes both sides of the argument kind of correct too - it's true that mass protests will spread the virus and have potential to increase or even spike the number of new infections (and probably true that some people will now die as a result of them), but also true that in this case the total number did not rise, because the lower spread from more people staying at home as a reaction effectively cancelled it out.

I wish it was possible to see the exact effect of there not being any protests but also having the same number of people staying at home.

Probably, it's a contagious virus that spreads when people are in close proximity. And with 1.5 million active cases in the US just now, you'd only need 150 people in a group for a >50% chance that one has it.

Though, even with a reasonable spread of infection in the protests themselves, they wouldn't cause a noticeable spike right away, besides maybe slightly slowing a downward trend. But long term, if say only two people at a protest infect another ten, that's ten new branches of infection that could have been avoided, particularly if the same people are visiting multiple protests.

Causes the diabetus. As that Harvard link mentions artificial sweeteners disrupt your reactivity to insulin, with increased consumption correlated with risk of metabolic diseases, including diabetes.

Sugar though doesn't cause diabetes, that's a total myth, although excess sugar can help make you fat, as an indirect risk factor. Either way just have some. Don't be drinking litres a day.

There's a bunch of surveys on this type of thing. Even though there's a fair bit of variation by location, age, gender (though that's probably men/women over/under reporting), average is typically 5 - 10. There's no data to say 35 is particularly common.

TopicIs being neutral just as bad as being on the "wrong" side of an issue?
Woodger
06/07/20 7:58:33 AM

Neutral in thought or neutral in action? Cause obviously thinking that the police shouldn't be killing a disproportionate number of black people is the right side of the issue, but if you take action by joining physical protests that help spread a virus that kills a disproportionate number of black people, are you still on the right side? Are you then neutral for not taking part?

But you're also right that one person can't hold the weight of every issue, and there are thousands of them worthy of a protest. The current protests are a good opportunity to take a stance, but I can't imagine the same people will be protesting police brutality in Brazil, Jamaica or Venezuela next, where it's much worse than in the US. Now that you've read and know about this too, and probably think it's bad, but not going to protest or even post a thing on instagram about it, is that you being neutral?

He says the noise from turbines cause cancer. Can noise actually cause cancer? Sadly this is an honest question.

My brother works on turbines for GE, he's never mentioned birds lying dead everywhere. I have to ask him about that tomorrow. I mean I assume it's true, birds fly into my house all the time so I assume they run into the blades quite often as well. I wonder how many are on the ground surrounding the turbines.
The cancer thing is total nonsense - theres no possible mechanism by which turbine noise, which is typically less than traffic, can cause cancer in humans.

Wind turbines do kill some birds, bats too, but it's way less than fossil fuel generation, even adjusting for kWh output. It's also way less than power lines, windows or cats.
