a "naturally fast metabolism" only burns about 100-200cal more a day, and it's more to do with you moving more in general than someone with a "slow" metabolism

you just didn't eat as much as you think you ate

I def didn't eat that much, but what I did eat was still only taco bell and donuts

I only eat about 1200 calories a day now

Thats literally all I knew. I didn't realize it was possible to overeat or that certain foods had more calories than others. For example, I would eat about 20 strips of bacon for 1 meal

Its pretty bad that your school health class never mentioned this stuff.

They may have mentioned it, but my mom just told me it was a lie and not to worry about it (she did that a lot on multiple subjects, resulting in me being very sheltered)

No one ever told me. I also used to just eat desserts as full meals. As long as I was full I thought the food did its purpose

I did not

I've said it multiple times, my parents were foreign and grew up in a time where everything they knew they learned from old wives tales. They also grew up poor and thought it was a miracle I could eat until I was full at all and didn't care much beyond that. I grew up in a very abusive household

I knew, I just didn't think they mattered. I thought CICO was a myth and that my sedentary lifestyle was to blame for being morbidly obese, not the 2000+ excess calories I was eating daily.

That's a great idea.

Apparently the reason why weight loss programs like Weight Watchers use points instead of calories is because they don't want people to figure out how to manage their own diet. So they hide away all the important information behind an arbitrary point system that you use to track how many points you're getting in a day, but the moment you stop you end up putting all the weight back on because you never actually learned how to pay attention to what you're eating.

No why would I wonder? My parents actually worshipped being fat, because it meant you were privileged enough to be able to eat enough to get fat. They were thoroughly disappointed at how skinny I was and told me every single day. Like I said, abusive household

how is this possible

Why would I have a nutrition fact panel around, let alone read it? Remember my parents were immigrants, 95% of the reading material in our house was a foreign language

33, ive been monitoring my calories for the last 5ish years since I noticed my metabolism slowing down. Also trying to properly measure out nutrient proportions in my meals. Still had no clue what a protein was until a couple years ago.

Dude, I knew that shit when I was like 8.
But also I had no friends and spent some of my spare time reading food labels and asking what everything meant like a little weirdo. I used to look at shit and compare the calories between foods and wonder why such a difference.

I'd say your school should have told you at some point tho.

what is there not to understand? there's literally one on every item you get from the grocery store

you wouldn't just have an individual panel lying around, they're literally printed on the cartons, jugs, bottles, bags, packages, etc. for the products you buy from the grocery store. how you managed to go 26 years without noticing these is baffling

Like I said, extremely sheltered and raised in ignorance of certain concepts. Do you have any idea how many words/numbers are on every single package? Do you ask yourself what every number or sentence means? Do you try to decipher the code behind bar codes? I just assumed it was jibberish
