I absolutely adore 5-6. I'm really partial to the whole aquarium theme and stuff, but what I really like about it is how it takes its position as a DLC case to play around with the player's expectations of how AA cases work, and it KNOWS it's doing this. Marlon Rimes is beautifully set up to be one of the case's harmless witnesses - he's the first minor character that shows up, and they give him a gimmick so that you don't think there's no reason for him to exist. And then Herman Crab is a great misdirect into making you think that he's going to be the bad guy - he first shows up on day 2 of the case, an AA classic, and he's kind of a jerk and seems like he has ulterior motives (he does but not at all in the way you think). I was legit taken aback when I realized that Crab wasn't the killer, and I wasn't thinking of Rimes at all - I don't normally vocally react to a game like this but when Rimes transformed I audibly laughed in surprise, and everything from that point on was just pure gold, especially when they had the one last swerve at the end where Rimes wasn't the killer at all. All of that stuff, for me, added up to being one of the most memorable cases in the series.

Yeah this, also it's just a niche genre so a lot of people are going to automatically gravitate to giving those negative votes because it's not their type of game, whereas I don't think there's any other genre of game prevalent in this contest that's like that.

I'm surprised even AAI2 didn't advance, I figured Ace Attorney would have a great deal more cache

I like Blackquill because he's presented as this criminal who plays dirty with his mind games, but he actually has a pretty strong sense of what's fair and what's not.

The other thing I like about him is that he just seems like someone who is having fun mixing it up with logic debates and cutting questions, like, of all the prosecutors he's the one who likes sparring the most

Phoenix and Blackquill have a pretty good dynamic I think. Blackquill I think just has great chemistry with all the leads though, he's a super fun prosecutor. He's snarky and a little mean without having a serious grudge against anyone like most of the series' prosecutors.

I had the same theory because of it being so weird that they modeled Gavin, but yeah. I'm glad they used Blackquill though, he's my favorite non-Edgeworth prosecutor and he's great in this case.

Well, the less sad way to do it would be for it to just be "Bobby Fulbright is the spy," which is a very subtle little tweak, but it makes his actions a lot more interesting if the personality is just one he completely made up on the fly and has been faking the entire time, as opposed to it being a real person who he is just mimicking perfectly, which offers pretty much no intrigue as far as any of his actions go.

Oh you beat the case so I didn't need spoilers

Yeah I'm annoyed that they didn't either make Fulbright just a fake identity made up by someone who was a bad guy all along, OR they actually had the original Fulbright killed off and replaced in between 5-3 and 5-4, because either way it would have made the deception hit a lot harder. Basically nothing he did up until 5-4 was foreshadowing him being a bad guy because he was just apparently acting like the real Fulbright the whole time? But that doesn't matter because we didn't know the real Fulbright. I've complained about this a lot.

* I've known for a while that it would be Fulbright, just because no one else is plausible, and also he was acting squirrely earlier, and also the way his sunglasses cover his eyes is incredibly suspicious, and because the way he shocks Blackquill is kind of mean, and also because there's no reason to make him 33 except so that he could be 25 when he committed the crime, but I extra knew when we got an emphasis on "the guy doesn't feel emotions like regular people" because Fulbright was subjected to Phoenix's magic powers instead of Athena's psychology. Though, honestly, he's like the killer in Persona 4: alarm bells just went off in my mind the second I saw him. By the way, I am writing all of this before we learn who the killer is, but I'm 100% confident it's him. Again, it's like that AZ comic where Apollo figures it out way before the game does.

You have to love how the game's explanation invalidates absolutely every reason given here because I guess Fulbright was just like that anyway

Regarding Spirit of Justice, I would suggest playing the DLC before the final case so you don't finish the game with a bad taste in your mouth. That's not the case with Dual Destinies, though.

I veto this advice. SoJ's DLC case MUST be played last.

Surprisingly interesting bracket, actually, as long as it gets shaped correctly. Most of the 4/5-seed 4-packs have a fair bit of intrigue, and some of these later round matches I dunno how they'll go. Taking Mega Man to the final 4 was... weird, but that division is so completely wide open that there are like 5 different reasonable winners. (I am not confident AT ALL in Mega Man > Metal Gear, not even a little bit)

I still can't get over the part in 5-3 where they go "we have scientifically determined that it's a woman's voice on the tape" (which doesn't make sense) then they're like "well it couldn't be robin I guess" but then robin turns out to secretly be a girl so suddenly it COULD be her??? how the fuck do they think genders work?

My take on things is that in what little they've shown so far uncomfortably resembles the "SS/CS" series too much rather than the original series that I loved, and I wasn't expecting things any different going into this either. Ultimately for me to consider buying this, I'll need to be convinced that this game is 3x better than Bug Fables, assuming it costs $60 (as compared to Bug Fables' $20 price). I loved Bug Fables and had a very great time with it, though it did have a few rough spots in it's presentation, it'll still be a pretty high bar to reach.

Even the original Paper Mario is probably only about 2x as good as Bug Fables lol. Bug Fables is just value! (Lovable game with some rough spots in the presentation sounds pretty much exactly right)

I mean it's possible that it'll be good, but the style looks identical to SS/CS, this is pretty obviously not the return to form I was hoping for - the best I can hope for is that this'll be a vast improvement on that style, but it has a long way to go, and considering I just downright hated the "generic Mario enemies in a generic Mario world" style of the last two games I'm not sure how this game could turn around my opinion on that

I mean, I liked Super Paper Mario (with reservations), and that game is about as far from the first two Paper Marios as you can get - it remains one of the most surreal and strange games anyone has ever probably made, and while I don't like it as much as the first two games, it's just fine!

I found 1991 > 1994 to be such a weird choice - I took 1994 without even looking back once

The game's style looks exactly like SS/CS which were both games I really disliked - the world just feels so dead and devoid of original ideas, and there isn't really any kind of story so much as there's just a sequence of things to do, more like a NSMB platformer than one of the first three Paper Mario games. With a couple of exceptions the scenario writing is just really dull and the world feels, if you'll pardon the pun, flat, compared to the rich and bizarre worlds of the first three PMs. This one just looks like a rehash of Color Splash again - it doesn't really take that much to tell. At best, it could be the best version of Color Splash possible but that still wouldn't be very fun.

Sorry to be a downer about it but this looks fucking terrible

Please, please buy Bug Fables on switch instead! It is good

Yeah there's no way I would take BotW to beat OoT. BotW flexed its muscles in this contest to be sure, it's a real contender - but OoT would have done everything BotW just did and worse

I'd probably still take LttP to beat BotW in a match that really mattered, I'm taking this MM/BotW bonus match with a heavy grain of salt

These leaderboards are pulled directly from the game's leaderboard data and is the only source the community uses for Necrodancer times - we don't submit to Speedrun.com because there's no real reason for us to. The only times submitted to Speedrun.com are low% times, because the game doesn't track low%. Low% is slower for every character than any% is, though.

Dove is an alternate play mode though - Cadence is the game's "default" mode, so it depends on what standard you're using here, most people in the community would consider 04:53.81 to be the game's fastest "any%"

I was curious where you even got the 3:20 lol, but dove low% is definitely not the fastest time

Fastest times for Necrodancer are:

For any character (no DLC): 01:55.66 (Dove)
For any character (Amplified): 02:13.32 (Dove)
For Cadence (no DLC): 03:57.98
For Cadence (Amplified): 04:53.81

nobody runs no DLC anymore so Cadence Amplified is probably the most sensible time to use

don't seriously worry about this because I know this isn't a hugely scientific project, I was just curious where you got the number

I do know the Necrodancer time is wrong regardless of metric used but I'm not going to get like, super nitpicky over a list that's made just for fun really
