The bottom line is you are obviously not happy and are very insecure. There is nothing impressive or prestigious about your academic pedigree, your job or what you do for a living, or your middling income

Are you talking about in general? I still have a top 1-2% income at an Ivy League university in a field with prestige. Its over 4x the median income for my age, which isnt middling. Youre right if you think academics and jobs shouldnt have prestige attached to them, but youre wrong if you say they dont.

reruns_revenge posted...
Work in general is not "life-limiting" when you make smart decisions based on proper motives that align with the things that matter to people in their lives,

It depends on the type of life you want to have. If you dont want to have much of a life, its not limiting to your life. If you do, its hard to deny something that takes up 40-50% of your waking hours between preparation and performance is not limiting how you can live life, even if you enjoy what you do.

reruns_revenge posted...
Maybe it is for you because of the job you have chosen, but that's your own fault. Start taking responsibility for your choices, and if you don't like the outcome, start making the changes necessary for a different one.

Thats what Im doing. It was even posted about in this topic...

reruns_revenge posted...
The problem with your posts is that you repeatedly contradict yourself, make absurd exaggerations and easily disprovable claims, and then lie about things you've said in the past when people call you out on them.

Ahh, I suggest you log a few and disprove them at sometime then. I really dont do this.

By your own admission, you picked both an education and career path based purely on what you believed to provide the most financial benefit.

I never said this and its not true. I chose something that paid well at the 20th percentile and wasnt too risky you get, which gives you a ton of options. This one seemed to align better. Theres a issue in the field going on about misrepresentation and people being in my situation. There was even a recent article published in our major journal regarding this.

reruns_revenge posted...
If you wanted to be rich or wealthy, or wanted the prestige that certain careers provide, you've done everything wrong.

I dont want those.

reruns_revenge posted...
If you wanted a mediocre career with an OK income, then you would be satisfied with where you are and where you'll end up.

Im fine with a mediocre career with an okay income. Im not sure Id call where I am mediocre, its very prestigious and the job itself has prestige. Im not upset with my income or my career prestige at all. Just my work environment. I might like a different in-field environment better, Ive only experienced large centers.

But also, work in general just seems to be life-limiting. Required to live in a certain place, be somewhere certain hours, look a certain way, have discrepancies in who you are and how you act professionally, away from family and friends, not knowing when youll get off, switching careers having huge opportunity costs associated.

Given this fact, I'm honestly a little surprised (and disappointed) that you merely chose to pursue a highly-paid vocation rather than trying to become truly rich. I suppose that ties into one of your larger ethos, though, which involves an aversion to work and an idea of min-maxing work to avoid working many years >_>

I never desired being truly rich, just having freedom (which I ironically took a pretty unfree path). The switch to caring more about money didnt happen until partway into grad school, when I realized my field is dull, inefficient, and mostly full of angry dull people. I originally pursued an academic interest that happened to pay well, but interest sort of died a few months into grad school.

I try to see what advantage I gained, but all I see is a stable upper middle class W2 while only having to work 40-50 hours. I guess friendships, RL social skills, and titles. I would have hit my current life goals faster by just working as dental hygienist out of high school, and life would be more aligned with how I wanted it to look. Because my W2 is high and stable it does allow me to take more risk, which does make me think about real estate investing to possibly become truly rich, but it also it possibly lengthens time to retirement for the benefit of more money in retirement and I dont know if I want to make that trade off because I strongly value frugality.

I do tend to forget about knowledge and virtue raising esteem among peers, being in an environment where Id say they have a somewhat negative relationship. Though perceived knowledge and virtue still being positive.

Theres no way Id pay $60 for a game physical or digital. I usually spend around $20. I see the secondhand market for digital editions to mess with sales and make them unfeasible.

I get all my books from the library, pretty much. Some counties have crap digital libraries but Ive been lucky. Also some libraries, like Philadelphia, will let you pay $50 to get a membership if youre not in county...I did mine for free being out of county and Im not sure how, it just sort of happened.

Pricey? Im not sure what you mean. I get 99% of my books from the library.

Other than the textbooks I get. I get old editions off amazon for $5-10 and get the student workbook for $5-10 if thats available/applicable.

Always been like this?

learning

At least your learning something.

Theres so much to learn.

Try to learn something new each time I do [routine task]

Wow, its amazing I never knew that [some minor bug or function of a software]

Its like its something you say to virtue signal intelligence/competence without thinking about the value of what youre doing. Not that you cant draw upon many fields and draw similarities among unreleased fields. And not that learning isnt good for the spirit, but I dont see learning temporary info thats not commonly used as virtuous. Learning should be more general information and allow you to understand the world around you better.

Are people just seeing money comes to people who have knowledge in a subject, and this is just the natural extension of societies love of money?

Yeah, I stopped hoarding when I got a job. Most of my friends are still hoarders, its kinda sad. Im moving everything I can do digital. If I lose it all, I wont care that much. Its meant to be experiences not experienced then hoarded.

Yeah, Im thinking having money just sort of removes struggle from life and makes you a bit depressed.

Unless you do the thing most people do and just spend it all on multiple houses and fancy vehicles and whatever else.

I just feel like I cant spend money because other people obviously need it more than me, but also I dont really want to donate at the moment because Im investing over 80% of my income.

Idk, its like the more money we come across the more problems we see

In terms of books. Its rare to find a novel that can hold my attention now.

Its rare for me to find tv that can hold my attention for long, even most movies I have difficulty concentrating on.

Nonfiction at least has a chance now.

I dont like where my mind is going. Not everything needs to be practical.

He also pointed out the big skill jumps you see in the self taught section. Like, why are artists so painfully bad with middle school math? My music professor said negative numbers have no meaning in the real world, an art professor had to talk about how science denies love exists because science says the only things that exist are measured (then went to tell us how we proved collective unconscious), and my drawing professor and photography professor had similar anti math/science sentiments throughout.

You dont see engineers and scientists proud of not being able to read, play an instrument, not understanding a play.

But I'm wanting something where I can take user payments and have the website continuously update, have user accounts also. Maybe have a mailing list and some interactive modules (javascript is still what's popular?), and I guess reference a database?

I guess people probably use packages that make most of the site for you? What's popular?

152k + some additional for matching and bonuses, probably around 161k with that? Its pretty prestigious name, both inside and outside the field...I dont care about that besides for its ability to get me interviews elsewhere.

I could switch to a job right now paying 130k + some additional for matching (Id be stuck there 4-5 years). Or I could wait a year and likely get 170-180k base, possibly shoot for 200k base in two years but I feel thats a stretch (and where my field tops out). I was planning on having the 170-180k job around now but boards have been postponed multiple times now. Switching now would postpone the 170-180k job from being a possibility for a while.

Luckily my girlfriend is incredibly supportive of me and is able to find work easily anywhere.

Company policy doesnt say anything about flights, only rule is no international travel.

My boss decided her own policy is no flights, she canceled her trip to California because shes paranoid about the virus (and she should be at her age). Other people in the department are taking flights. I could go to HR, but thered be no point. We fired the last employee who brought something to HR.

I havent taken a day off in a year because shes shitty about PTO. I told her I was driving 30 hours each way to go see family for my vacation and only taking a week off (the max shed approve, two week vacations arent allowed).

Idk, it just seems unreasonable to drive 30h each way to spend 3 days there instead of flying and spending 8, but then again my girlfriends mom is doing it to see us for three days. I can tell the boss I changed my mind and am flying when she asks but dont think thats a good idea, shell for sure cancel my other vacations coming up. It was hard enough getting a week off in summer and a week off in days that are adjacent to summer.

I just feel really bad for lying about it, but I havent seen my family for over a year because shes shitty and wouldnt let me go earlier because she thought I was too new, then she thought it was too close to exam period. Were in the green and Im flying nonstop to a place in the green.

Its disgusting, and I dont believe were close to being short on supply.

Like contact them online and just ask them for money?

idk, my latest money-making idea is just asking for it. Like make a website with a small advertising budget and just ask for people to give me money...make that the entire website.

Like I have some friends who said they basically slept with people just because they asked...but then again this is online so maybe harder idk. I could create an account system and give out trophies based on how much money people gave me and how often.

This isn't a difficult fix but there is not such thing as an OEM potentiometer. You're in over your head. Just take it to a pro. You're looking at an hour of bench time, tops. The pot itself will be another $10~.

Turns out its a non-solder one that plugs into a circuit board. I knew the pot plugged in that way but figured Id have to solder the wires on. Fixes the soldering issue, but from the company its a $27 pot and I have the knob to replace also. Maybe I can get a cheaper pot and resolder the wires onto it.

Red_Frog posted...
Did the knob actually crack/split, and are you absolutely certain it no longer functions? If it's just that the knob fell off you could use something to pry that metal back into shape so it still holds the knob.

The knob is in many pieces, I have no clue how it even happened, it like shattered. The pot is still functional, I just dont know how to pry it back and have it be straight enough. I do really want a new matching knob.
