glad my vote was able to prevent the shitty endgame from surpassing breaking bad

for star wars I say a 2 I guess. it's somewhere between a 1 and a 2, but it's tough to say I was "extremely disappointed" when I already went into the movie expecting it to be very bad.

well, first you want to narrow it down. what kind of games do you like and what can your computer run?

the most low effort way to find something is to just go on steam and check the free-to-play games category. sort by user reviews. narrow it down to specific genre or tags if you'd like. it's pretty easy to find the things that are universally agreed upon to be worth at least trying.

after that you get into more niche 'free gaming' areas like checking game development forums and community forums for specific development software. it's harder to measure what is actually good out of places like this, but trying a bunch of games just to give them a chance can be a fun waste of time. sure, there's a lot of garbage to sift through -- it's the same on steam, it's just that steam is better at sorting it for you.

also there are some gems that you won't find on steam or anywhere else. stuff like yume nikki, the witch's house, and ib are just examples of games that were made in RPG Maker and gained cult following through this method. although yume nikki is on steam now, I wouldn't really trust the company that put the game there (there's been rumors for years of the original creator of the game committing suicide after they disappeared from the internet, and if this is true than anyone who is claiming rights to the game and putting it on steam is INCREDIBLY scummy in my opinion)

at the end of the day, although this is more of a gray area, there's also just the reality that you can play almost every NES, SNES, Genesis, N64, PS1, PSP and many other console games for free on your computer. I won't go into anymore detail there, since I assume we all know what I'm talking about and at the very least you should try to play some actually good, actually free games before you resort to illegal activities.

on topic... I agree that buying one right now is probably a bad move. if you've waited this long you may as well just wait a bit longer. if you need something to do in the meantime there's like a million free games on PC you can play to keep yourself busy.

I got one from a pawn shop, it was a great deal. I paid somewhere between 200-250 dolllars (can't remember)... there was somehow a forgotten copy of nba 2k(something) in the disk drive (whatever the current year was at the time) as well as The Last Of Us downloaded onto the system already. so I basically got two games for free in addition to getting the console for much cheaper than the regular price.

it still runs just fine although it can be a bit loud at times. don't regret it at all, although I know if I was unlucky it would have been one of those situations where you buy it from a pawn shop and then it stops working after a few weeks and you're screwed. I definitely got lucky, especially with the "free" games.

I've been to a bunch of states, I can't say I particularly liked any place that much more or less than another. I don't think there's really anywhere that I belong. usually if I was happier in a specific place it was just because of my current situation -- not anything to do with the regional culture or the community there. honestly, I found that most people in most places aren't actually that different in all of the most important ways.

the main metric I use to compare states now (something I've had to do a few times when deciding where to move), is just thinking about the state laws and taxes in each place and what level of bullshit I have to accept.

I meant more such polarization.

only 3% of people rated endgame as a 1/4 in terms of how satisfied they were with the ending of the entire marvel franchise. one of them was me, a person who actually uses the full rating scale very effectively and has a documented history of doing so. you can see my average score on MAL over the course of a decade+ is very close to 5.9, which is the expected mean on a 10 point scale.

I'm also the only person in the entire topic who said anything overly negative about endgame.

what you are seeing in this topic is not polarization at all.

you literally saw ONE person make a negative comment, and that person has a documented history of using the full rating scale very effectively over hundreds of ratings. even mathematically your argument makes no sense because the people who rated IW/Endgame on the negative side of the scale were 3x as likely to rate it a 2/4 instead of a 1/4.

I'd rather watch something that is going to make me happy.

I will say I don't think it has anything to do with it being the year 2020. bad shit has happened, nonstop, throughout human history. people who think that 2020 is uniquely terrible are just suffering from a bad case of recency bias and lack of perspective.

my change in taste when it comes to media I think just has to do with me being older and feeling more weary, and less with the state of the world (which has always been shit, and will always be shit... so damn, at least let me play a game that is going to make me feel good for 30 hours instead of feeling miserable)

Infinity War was a pretty great movie, a solid 8/10. Endgame absolutely sucked both as a movie and as the conclusion for such a long built up story arc. Will probably be one of the few here to vote a 1, but god damn I hate lazy time travel plots. Can't believe they'd have the audacity to throw away an entire franchise just to have some guy invent time travel in like 30 seconds. And the big one sided battle at the end was utterly pointless... as well as them needing to find convoluted reasons to write out major characters like Iron Man and Captain America only because the actors were done with the franchise, not because this is what those established characters would actually do.

They glorification of Tyrion isn't all too bad as long as he's in King's Landing considering most of the scenes are adapted from his POV chapters. It's not very clear to the reader either a lot of times that he's not as good at everything as it occasionally seems in his chapters. I didn't get the idea everything was going too well for him. The problem comes later.

I think the big issue is that when you closely examine the text, you get a better understanding of the subtle politics that fly above Tyrion's head -- an appreciation for the true masterminds like Littlefinger and Varys.

if you closely examine the show... well... things don't turn out so well for varys OR littlefinger.

so yeah the problem does come later, but this is really the start of the problem. they created 'popcorn' versions of very complicated characters, which did a GREAT job in causing this show to explode in popularity during its peak. show only people were okay with this because they were experiencing the great plot and story for the first time, they didn't notice that the characters had been gutted. the issue is that once the plot and the story were gone, people finally started to question the characters as well. this is why show only people only started to think the show was bad in later seasons.

and maybe they are right. it's all subjective. do you think a show with an interesting story and simplified characters is good? then yes, the early seasons are still good. but if you ask me when did the show START to decline, it's very clear to me -- it started when they started simplifying characters and getting more comfortable changing plots, almost always for the worse.

it's been a while since I've seen it, so I decided to double check. and yeah, you're right.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6wxdrhHlcnQ

cersei does come up with the idea of "raining fire on them from above." looks like I misremembered just how much they took away her credit for the idea. this is subtle, but the book is subtle about it too. tyrion never acknowledges that he got the idea from cersei, not even in his own mind. and you can tell based on their exchange, her long pause, that she's clearly thinking about some kind of secret plan that she hasn't shared with tyrion yet.

so yeah, season 2 is a little bit more faithful than I was thinking in my head. the extent to which tyrion adapts and refines the plan might have changed between the show and book, but they seem to follow the same basic structure (cersei is up to some old bullshit, tyrion goes and confronts the pyromancer, confiscates her supplies because it's too reckless and dangerous... then proceeds to use them in his own plan without giving any credit to cersei). I'm way too lazy to go get my copies of the books, read through them, as well as rewatching the show just to find out.

they still glorify tyrion way too much, totally miss the mark on varys' character, and change littlefinger from a well-liked guy who no one would suspect into the first guy who everyone suspects.

After reading the topic though I actually agree that the first signs of the show being bad were in season 2. I guess I just didn't consciously notice them at the time. Like, Dany's material is terrible. Yeah. But she is also pretty much the worst thing about the series and so her material being terrible doesn't really stand out to me usually. When you put it into context though it reminded me of how bad and pointless her story in season 2 is.

There's also a lot of nuance that gets lost with several of the plot lines. I guess season 2 is where they started to trim and destroy storylines, while season 3 is where they first started to be more bold about replacing it with their own garbage content.

I also had to check and was surprised to be reminded that "talisa" is introduced in season 2, not season 3. this makes me even more confident that season 2 was the start of the decline. they were already changing storylines, season 3 is just when they started to become even more comfortable and more bold with doing it to more major plots.

edit: while I'm on the subject of the showrunners constantly jacking off tyrion, I was just thinking about some more of my gripes with season 2. wish I could change my vote, honestly...

book comparisons/whining/spoilers:
In the book, using wildfire was cersei's idea. tyrion steals her idea and pats himself on the back for it... then whines like a brat when tywin steals credit for "his" amazing idea. this is way more interesting than tyrion just being the best at everything and coming up with every plan. in fact, most readers don't even catch this because the story is told from tyrion's own POV and he is his own best hype man. this is such a phenomenally interesting narrative concept and a way better showing of a character that is hypocrtical, flawed, and human. the show runners just do not understand what good writing is, so they changed this to make tyrion more "awesome"

in the book, tyrion spends all of book 2 getting clowned by littlefinger and varys without even realizing it. in the show, he is so epic that varys even congratulates him on being so good at playing the game. now you may be thinking, ah, maria, but what if varys is just saying this to manipulate tyrion? unfortunately, in the show, this is not the case. see later seasons where varys continues to view tyrion as an ally and supports and praises him instead of manipulating and using him. the showrunners do not understand the nuance of the varys or littlefinger characters, they only understand that "tyrion smart" because tyrion thinks, from his own point of view, that he is smart.

As a long time book reader (since way before the show was a thing), I always thought season 3 was the first major and noticeable dip in quality. This season did have its fair share of great moments, yes. But this was the first true departure where the showrunners started to take a lot of liberties with the source material -- namely in how they chose to pace the flow of story and information, as well as what material was cut and which materials were given extra focus -- and these things generally led to an inferior product overall.

I'm not saying season 3 was as bad as later seasons. that's definitely not true. but if you ask me when did the show START to decline, I would say season 3 was really it. this is when it "started."

however, the day the show truly went off the rails, to the point at which there was no longer any safe return, was the change in season 4 regarding tyrion, tysha, jaime, and tywin. this was a culmination of many small decisions to whitewash tyrion's character, and the director's refusal to adhere to the source material on the most flagrant display... in a way that changed the relationship between several characters, the motives for character actions, the very plot itself, for many seasons to come in an unprecedented ripple effect from which there was never any recovery seen. and it marked the time when the directors started to feel more and more comfortable making similar changes to the story. almost always for the worse.

I remember having an immediately negative reaction to this episode, while everyone else was still busy praising it. why wouldn't they? they all loved it, and it was still a great show at the time. but I knew much worse things were to come. season 4 is when I more or less stopped caring about anything that happened in the show, and resigned myself to just watch it for the sake of completing it.

I guess Samurai Champloo is the obvious answer, if you haven't seen it already.

Aside from that... this is a tough request. The anime you're describing might not even exist. I went through my top 200 anime, even going as far as to check and see if there was anything I rated poorly but that you might like.. and didn't find a second title that even closely fits your conditions.

The anime and manga industry is heavily driven by serialized titles that will keep selling more volumes, more chapters, more episodes, more seasons. A lot of the structural problems with the narrative of anime, and the reason a lot of them have poor endings, is because of this industry standard. Often times there is very little planning and the story just continues until it train wrecks or the series is cancelled and gets a rushed ending. Worse than that is how anime are often adapted from long running manga series, or other source materials like Light Novels with no ending in sight. This means any individual season of an anime usually has an inconclusive ending and isn't guaranteed to get a sequel.

yeah why would anyone think lisel is quote unquote openly antagonistic what an outrageous stance

I never said it was an outrageous stance. I have MANY TIMES said "yes I am an asshole" when accused of being an asshole. But facts and logic mean nothing to you people. I said it's ironic that people like you, who are always sarcastic and antagonistic, are the ones who try to police my behavior. Take a look in the mirror.

i figured you weren't interested in material conversation because you've been openly antagonistic - and continue to be - towards everyone you're responding to and you've seemingly determined that america has one of the better worldwide responses solely on the basis of you successfully dividing the third column by the first column. i don't know why this act gives you confidence

The irony here is pretty interesting. Why is it always the people who are incredibly dismissive, elitist, and sarcastic toward me (and others) who try to police my social behavior and accuse me of being "openly antagonistic." Yet everything that I say is backed up by tangible evidence, and I explain my position on everything.

But you know what, I'll answer you anyway. Despite the fact you are doing exactly what you accuse me of doing.

You don't know why this number gives me confidence? Really? I'm talking about your statistical likelihood of death or survival after contracting the disease by location. This is the most important stat you could possibly look at. I feel like I shouldn't need to explain this to anyone but... dude... whether you live or die is pretty much your highest priority in life.

I determined my position based on hard data. You seem to have determined your position based on the fact that you hate america so much you are willing to ignore the data. Like I do not understand how you think you have the intellectual authority here.

which isn't true, as heads of government in various parts of the world are estimating anywhere from 1% of the population (B.C this week, Ohio back in March [!!]) to ~5% (Quebec this week), to 20% (New York City last week) have been infected. these are very large numbers! and American states are trying to open up in this environment! this isn't a good response!

It is true. Looking at specific US cities with high infection rates does not somehow dispute or disprove the hard data that we have sitting in front of us. If you want to criticize the US response -as a whole- you need to be prepared to accept the data -as a whole-. You can't just pick the worst possible cases in specific locations and then claim that this applies to the entire united states.

which also isn't true, as American poison control centres saw a surge immediately following a Trump press conference where he suggested ingesting disinfectant.

I can't possibly see how you think this somehow refutes what I said. You do understand that dumb people drinking disinfectant is not an indicator of the quality of the US healthcare system as a whole, right? It's incredibly disrespectful to hard working doctors and nurses to hold views like this.

all of your posts are just you riffing off of something and not fully internalizing them or understanding the context they're in, so like, why not be glib, there's not going to be anything interesting here!

If you think the conversation isn't interesting then shut the fuck up. Nobody is asking you to participate in a conversation that you clearly know very little about, and seem to only want to proliferate the spread of fear, misinformation, and negative attitudes toward some of the best healthcare responders in the world. All you do is create pointless noise.

Why am I rude to people like you? It's because I want you to go away.

that's an incredibly unfair reading of my posts in this topic. I have, at length, analyzed and explained data which supports every point that I have made. my discourse has been way more comprehensive than just telling you to "shut up" because people "have it worse."

you're the one trying to turn this into a reductive one line argument about how I'm an "edgelord" without acknowledging or responding to any of the actual arguments I've put forth. if you want to have an actual discussion, I'm here. if you want to continue throwing a hissy fit, have fun playing with yourself.

you think that appreciating the quality of life I have is obnoxious, edgelord flag waving. that says way more about you than it does about me.

people complaining about how hard they have it in america gets so tiresome.

charon, the water you shit in is more clean than the water many people drink.

when you say 'healthcare for all' you realize that someone has to pay for it, right? it's almost a certainty you are in the top 1% of income earners in the world. I don't know why you think you'd be one of the people getting free healthcare in this scenario. the reason other people get access to healthcare is because you pay 5,000 dollars. america subsidizes the healthcare costs of the entire world with medical and pharmaceutical research. and if you're NOT okay with this then you don't really want healthcare for all. you just don't want to pay.

if your biggest problem is that you had to pay 5,000 dollars for access to some of the best healthcare in the world, and you can afford it, and you can probably still get your bill taken care of if you're willing to fill out some paperwork, but you're not even willing to do that because 5,000 dollars is not a big enough deal to you... yeah, excuse me if I don't feel all that sympathetic about how much you hate america.

it's very good that the only western nation that ties healthcare to employment is also undergoing its worst unemployment crisis in history. this, to me, signals a good response. i would want to live in this country in the middle of a health crisis.

if you have a position that is actually worth arguing, I'm sure you're capable of doing it without falling back on lame ass sarcasm. what is your point?

unemployment is up during a pandemic? no shit.
you think healthcare in america is bad? prove it.

deciding which country I'd rather be in right now, I'm looking at two factors.

  1. how likely am I to get infected? this number is incredibly small, and all within the same standard deviation for all western countries. and if you really, really want to be a stickler... america is not even one of the high numbers on this list.
  2. how likely am I to survive if I get infected? america or canada are the among best places to be. a canadian is sitting here trying to tell an american that our response has been terrible, when either of us will double our chance of dying if we step foot almost anywhere else.
your argument absolutely collapses in the face of hard data. although even calling it in argument is giving you more credit than you deserve. you can, as always, as your type always do, walk away in smug satisfaction that you were just getting in a 'witty' barb and don't need to be held accountable for any position you hold.

I mean I am looking at many angles for response too

it's okay, you can just admit you didn't look at the relevant data. there's nothing shameful about learning new information.

$1200 one time is not a great dealing with massive job losses etc.

Canada for example is $2000 a month among other things. We aren't bailing out tax haven companies either.

I have nothing to say about this. there's currently no way of knowing what level of unemployment will arise in the long term, how this will affect the economy of any given country, how effective it will be to give people thousands of dollars to combat these theoretical problems which haven't really arisen yet. this is something we're going to see hard data on, like, a year from now. it is not something that should give you such a high level of certainty that you're calling one of the countries with the BEST possible infection to death rate as one of the worst responders.

Also Trump just says a lot of stupid stuff and the media slaps it everywhere.

the notion that trump sitting in the white house could somehow impact the quality of healthcare being received by a random patient in a hospital in west virginia, washington, and north dakota is just completely absurd. we have hard data available that clearly shows infection rates and the death rate for an infected person. why is there any need to speculate about trump's sphere of influence? I don't give a shit what he says or does, or what the media has to say about him.
