Change starts on the individual level; real change that's going to be lasting. People have to want the world to be a better place, not have the government tell them that's the right way. It goes that way for this virus, global warming, pollution, racism, etc. Anything really. If people on the individual levels aren't changing for the better, I hold them accountable and part of the problem. Fair enough. I think about it like I do climate change/global warming. Sure, individual people shouldn't litter, blah blah blah. But individuals are not the cause of climate change. And just because one person or even a sizable number of people start to turn off their lights and recycle, that isn't going to solve the problem. It has to come from the top down. |

Quite frankly, if people like you would stop denying this is a serious issue and do what the hell you're supposed to do like New Zealand, they wouldn't have to close international travel for very long. I will come to the defense of Smuffin here in that America's predicament really should NOT be placed at its people. It's the leadership or lack thereof. It's the inability to set up systems of contact tracing. It's mixed messaging about mask wearing. It's the fact that for two months you couldn't get tested unless you were basically facing hospitalization anyway. That despite all of this there's still no meaningful reform to health care in this country. Anti-maskers and people who want to open things up are among those who have seen that America basically failed the last few months. And they're absolutely right. Rather than seek a perpetual shut down to their way of life, they prefer to suck it up and live with the deaths, thinking them to be an acceptable loss. Personally, I don't blame them for feeling this way. As someone who's already lost their grandparents and parents I sometimes think the same way. Personal attacks on people not wearing masks is a displacement of anger that should be reserved for the government. Not just Trump, but Fauci, the Dems for not pushing MFA, and the CDC too honestly. |

colliding 07/14/20 2:30:12 PM #31 | HeroDelTiempo17 posted... So I love Witcher 3 and I'll say the game does a massive disservice to newcomers by leading with Velen and then expecting you to do the Bloody Baron storyline (which is...divisive to say the least) first when the game opens up. That is not where all the best writing is and the other two main objectives (Novigrad and Skellige) are a lot more interesting and fun, and also have better sidequests. But maybe you got there and still feel that way and this is moot. I'm in Skellige now. I'm still playing but mostly because it's a pandemic and I'm unemployed, tbh. If I actually had a job/responsibilities/other games in my backlog I probably would've dropped it. There's not really anything wrong with the story/writing; compared to other wrpg's it's like literature, to be honest. I just don't get sucked in. Some quests are certainly more interesting than others but the plot's conflict is too slight currently. The game hasn't really made me care about Ciri or the Wild Hunt but expects me to? Anyway, not to derail the thread. I'll echo the earlier posters who praise infamous and Spider-Man PS4. Not a huge open world and fun movement. Strong narrative that isn't overwhelmed by side quests. |

colliding 07/14/20 12:41:30 PM #26 | I feel like I'm completely over open world games other than BoTW Like I started Witcher 3 and it's sometimes entertaining but the main character sucks and the whole atmosphere is bargain fantasy. There's all this lore and dialogue and a huge (HUGE) world and I just don't care. The writing in the side quests is fine but like there's actually too much here without having a decent main plot. RDR2 - beautiful game but again it's somewhat boring. I think I'm just about-facing away from sandbox/freedom games and back towards more linear story-driven gameplay (note that I'm not advocating for hallways/corridors, but just more focus) |

colliding 07/14/20 12:30:56 PM #106 | I don't agree that you need to play a game to the end to criticize its story or gameplay. I think for most games value judgments can be made anywhere between 1/3 or half way through a game. If you play the game a third of the way through, and all the gameplay systems are open to you, and you absolutely do not want to keep playing, then that's a valid criticism. Even if the last fifteen minutes are really evocative/emotional, you cannot discount the fact that something prevented this player from wanting to invest their time in the game. Anyway, I do feel kind of bad that this topic has been effectively derailed from its original purpose. |

I haven't played it, so I don't know if it's good. I can say that I find certain aspects of the story disappointing, but I cannot make a claim as to the story's overall quality without having played the game first. If you play the game and dislike it then that's fine. You're overreacting to the posts on purpose or you have terrible reading comprehension. |

colliding 07/13/20 2:44:22 PM #30 | Video game narratives don't exist independently of gameplay. A game's mechanics can have a huge impact on how the narrative is conveyed and received by the player. "It's no different than a movie other than you had to press a button to keep watching." Yes. So it is different. Our difference in opinion stems from people discounting the importance of the button press, where I think it is essential. If I watched someone play Metal Gear Solid 2, I could definitely have an opinion about the story and what I saw, but said opinion most likely would have changed if I had played the game myself. You need that role-playing aspect of gameplay to build attachment to Raiden. |
Topic | Actual The Last of Us Part II Spoiler Topic |
colliding 07/13/20 2:25:31 PM #21 | The problem with the "watching it is enough to form opinions" argument is that you're not watching it in a vacuum. If you're watching a streamer, their reactions are going to affect your personal reaction. Also, I do think button pressing is a big deal, because of immersion. The stories of most JRPG's are pretty bad, but actually playing the game and maneuvering your avatar around the world actually does help in this regard. |

colliding 07/08/20 10:41:00 PM #75 | The actual story of MGSV is absolutely not lighthearted and hilarious. It's much more grim than any other game in the series. The game retains the absurdity of earlier installments, but we're talking about the story itself and comparing it to prior stories in the series. |
Topic | Listening to the Final Fantasy XV OST makes me want to actually play the game |
colliding 07/08/20 6:43:08 PM #65 | I'm the complete opposite and found the actual gameplay of MGSV much more satisfying than XV. I could sneak around in the fox engine all day. Story-wise the two games cancel each other out. Both seem to have a story to tell but can't tell it well. Both require additional legwork to actually understand the story, beyond the act of playing the game . For XV, you have to watch a pretty bad prologue movie, download multiple DLC's which aren't integrated into the story very well, and even then you probably need to read a wiki. For MGSV you gotta listen to hours and hours of tapes, most of which are boring exposition dumps. There are a handful of good ones. Maybe this is in a way Peace Walker's fault, because the tapes there were actually kind of fun, but here they are not. So yeah, story-wise it's a wash. One has cup noodles, the other kazuhira burgers. |

Of course you can just "not do them" but why not try to make them fun. At least there's no trophy for 100% quest completion. |

Topic | Worst part of Persona 4 (Golden) |
colliding 07/08/20 1:43:18 PM #5 | I guess the idea is that it gives you something else to do while you go after the secret bosses but the rng of getting the right monsters to appear and getting the required number of items to drop is just ugh Honestly, while I love Persona 3-5, none of them have done quests well. P5's quests are short and sweet, so that's nice, but they're all basically the same. Persona 3 is actually better than 4 because all the quests are laid out for you by Elizabeth and you can accept the quests before you actually get to the Tartarus floors. But then the game throws "people wandering into Tartarus" at you, so there's a lot of forced exiting and replaying floors. Something for P6 to fix maybe. Also make the cast older please. |
Topic | So why did the medical community bungle mask advice so badly? |
colliding 07/08/20 1:30:32 PM #32 | It's very unlikely people are getting the virus from surfaces, unless you're licking them or something. The idea of leaving packages outside/disinfecting them was definitely people grasping at straws early on about how the virus spreads. I definitely remember experts saying that masks were actually worse than no mask. Which even back then was comical. Like look at countries where mask wearing is accepted (Japan, South Korea, Taiwan). It's obvious it helps. The decision to downplay mask wearing was done so purely to stop people from buying all of the N95's. When what we should have been doing was ramping up production. |

Doing a new playthrough and who thought it would be a good idea to have quests 1) spread out all over town 2) tied to items in dungeons you've already beaten, 3) these items are tied to drops by certain enemies who may or may not be rare. It's not bad game design or anything, but it's super annoying and terribly dated. It feels like a holdover from a prior generation of JRPG's where people had fun grinding for rare monsters. It's a waste of time and it overlevels you. |

The endorphins from working out are real and addicting. If you live in a place where you're not blessed with outdoor space, and if you live in a tiny apartment or something, the gym is the only viable alternative for a real workout. Considering the last five or six chapters in totality as the ending really stretches the idea of endings. My post is a direct response to your earlier statement that the problem of FFXV is the middle, not the end. If your earlier point was to defend the literal ending of the game, then fine. But I got the distinct impression you were referring to "the last five or six chapters" as "the end." |
