So let's talk about AEW cause it hasn't gotten much talk in here lately.

I think I'm starting to fall into the Scarlet/Iceman camp of being a bit disillusioned with it. The booking is starting to fall into a lot of the common WWE tropes. The most glaring one is I notice we're getting more and more people randomly popping up in matches, distraction finishes basically. I hate distraction finishes. Joey Janela vs MJF was just a gross affair with Kip Sabian and that girl showing up to make out and do nothing else but make Janela hesitate, but it's been happening more and more often lately.

Now on what may be the more nitpicky end to some, we've got Moxley vs PAC for the number one contendership, with Moxley wrestling the match with literally one eye and still being the winner-- this is WWE main event babyface style tripe at its worst. I realize Moxley vs Jericho is the real money match here and that you don't wanna run heel vs heel on a PPV nor do you wanna turn PAC or Jericho, but PAC vs Jericho to take place, for whatever reason you can make up, before the next PPV as Dynamite filler? I see this being a really good way to kill a couple more weeks between the PPV, and you can always put Moxley back into the picture closer to when the PPV takes place when his eye has healed up-- you don't hurt him at all by saying he can't beat PAC when he's wrestling with one eye. You do however hurt PAC who at one point was at a level where he could credibly wrestle Moxley to a draw. You also remove a potential interesting contender for Moxley's title (assuming he beats Jericho, which he probably should) by putting PAC so clearly beneath him.

Now I realize the story is that PAC was put off is game due to the ship hurting his flying, but I just don't like it-- to be sure I'm not buying PAC as a main event type guy any time soon, and you need more than Jericho and Moxley at your top rung.

I dunno it's just a bit worrying to me. I was really hoping we'd be getting an alternate product throughout. WWE with slightly more competent storylines and better matches isn't really what I was hoping for. A more dynamic product that really uses the whole record thing to change up how feud structuring works is what I was hoping for, and it doesn't really seem to be doing that as we settle more and more into what the card positions are. Did it seem less that way at first because the card hierarchy hadn't settled in yet, or is it just getting lazy as time goes on? I'm not sure.

I'd personally argue Honky Tonk Man doesn't exist as a useful commodity in 2020 with the formulaic way WWE books matches and feuds.

I mean, I think Drew has been booked similarly, to again, Cesaro of say 2016, or countless other midcarders/upper midcarders who never really ended up doing anything but had some minor protection. What have they done with Samoa Joe. What have they done with Braun Strowman. What have they done with Bobby Lashley. Etc etc. I mean I wouldn't call him similar to 2019 Cesaro who was thoroughly dead I suppose, but would I have assumed McIntyre couldn't eventually become that a few years down the line? No.

Like, he's being protected to some minor measure, certainly, but there's no real reason to assume he wouldn't continue languish like the likes of a Cesaro of yore eventually ultimately ended up doing before having seen the Rumble.

I do not think it's correct to say that he was already defined as a guy who would never main event - much the opposite, I think it was clear to anybody paying attention that they had main event aspirations for him.

I don't agree with this and am hesitant to take lectures on paying attention from a guy who self-admittedly doesn't watch the product often (granted I also have this problem but I do feel that of the two of us I've watched more WWE in the time Drew has been around)

I think Eddv's Cesaro comparison is apt. Well, Cesaro circa like 2016, but still, never really felt like he was going anywhere. Hasn't been thoroughly ruined so the run is credible, but like, without the Rumble win being known do I feel he's doing anything relevant any time this year? Probably not.

Well I'm not saying it didn't make sense. I totally got why Brock didn't want his help.

I just think having Benjamin actually help Brock for a bit, then going into that thing they ended up doing makes everyone involved look better, even Keith Lee and Strowman because I think being attacked by Benjamin makes them look better than just being dumb (except maybe Brock himself, but oh well he would be fine)

But then again I'm just a big Shelton Benjamin fan who really wished he did anything relevant ever

So while I'm nitpicking Lesnar's Rumble segment... two other things bugged me. The first, not sure why recently redebuted John Morrison was thrown out in 9 seconds, since he's one of the few WWE guys who isn't poisoned right now due to just being a new face. Would have been better as a later entry I feel where Brock wasn't there if you don't want him doing anything against Lesnar.

Also personally I would've liked if the late Brock entry sequence went:

Keith Lee -> Braun Strowman -> Shelton Benjamin

Shelton helps Brock when the two hosses are starting to overwhelm him, Brock double elims them in similar fashion, then does basically the same "hey buddy!" spiel with Shelton Benjamin

But I guess that would make Shelton Benjamin look like less of a geek, and Keith Lee and Strowman would get eliminated for reasons that isn't them being stupid, so I guess we can't have that.

Oh wait one more minor nitpick-- I knew Brock was out very soon, 100%, once he hit 13 elims, because of WWE's STATZ fetish. Letting Shelton Benjamin pick up an elim for him would've given him some more time.

But other than those and MVP, I have literally no problems with Brock's segment of the rumble. It was pretty amazing.

My only disappointment with Brock part of Royal Rumble was my boy MVP not getting to do anything. Other than that freshest Rumble in years and years.

Comes in on the tides
Heavy water theming in all sorts of things in his character, not just brotherhood. Yes Wakka and even Rikku also have a lot of these but I mean that doesn't invalidate Tidus's.
Basically gets swept up in the world of Spira which would be like the ocean, influencing the flow of the world around him.
Time mage-- time is often represented as a current like water. The flow of time, etc. Tides ebb and flow with time.

Not really sure what the sun connection is other than "herp sun sigil" and "connection to girl named after moon" and "is blonde" some of which I feel work with either name and some of which could very clearly be coincidental for obvious reasons (I mean you need to pick a hair color-- is Cloud sun related too).

Both the sun and tides connection were intended and whoever named Tidus was very proud of himself because he was way the hell more clever than whoever named Squall or Cloud.

But yeah it's all kinda irrelevant to pronunciation, as Tidus is not in fact pronounced like tides nor tida.

I'm not saying it has to be coincidence at all.

I'm saying themes exist in the items and words and you can find consistencies and inconsistencies in all sorts of routes. That doesn't mean they're all intended-- it means that people can claim they're intended because of what the canon ended up being for reasons possibly unrelated to intent. Like for all the hubub about his name not being "tides" his name isn't actually "tida" either, it's just close.

It's certainly possible that Tidus was an experiment in making something that sounds more like an actual name than previous protagonists, but still is subtly based off an English word.

This is honestly what I think the answer is for the record

My point is you can't really take a wikipedia entry as gospel. History is malleable, and the victors write the history, so Square will endorse whatever makes things most consistent. Like yes there is a relationship between the Japanese words, but there are relationships between all sorts of words in the game. Some of them have to be coincidental like will happen when you theme item drops.

If you're claiming Tidus has no basis to be related to the tides you're just playing dumb to bolster your point-- and in fact the moon influences the tides so I mean, that contrast is still there either way. Really I would argue it's actually a stronger analog to their relationship too as I would not call Tidus and Yuna "opposites" in how they interact!

Mars Sigil, Lulu's, is named for the god of war, which is meant as a contrast to Rikku's Venus Sigil, named after the goddess of love. This opposite nature symbolizes their vying for Tidus's affections which is reinforced by the fact that they can throw him the ball for Blitz Ace.

Mercury, is the closest planet of the sun, which symbolizes Tidus and Wakka's brotherly bond.

ORRR it could just be that they're all based off of stuff in the solar system, with the two main characters getting the two most prominent features in the solar system as you'd expect them to, and it's a bunch of square pegged horoscope shit to try and seem insightful

Tidus' name comes from the Okinawan word for sun, which is why he has the Sun sigil and probably why he's blonde and wears yellow. His name was never supposed to be related to tides, that's just a coincidence. They probably gave him and Yuna Okinawan sounding names because the game has an island theme, I guess.

So why is Tidus the one to be named after a Japanese word while Cloud and Squall are based off of English words

Especially when Tidus has a much stronger water theme than sun theme

I think there's a coincidence at work, but it's not the one I'm mentioning.

Well my point is that Tidus's character origin seems closest to European or American and as such it makes more sense to pronounce the name similarly to how you'd expect a name from one of those regions to be pronounced than to use the Japanese pronunciation just cause the game is Japanese. Thus the jump to Titus isn't as big a deal as you're making it. It's not really like Juan vs John because a Spanish style motif is something that can exist with a character too, even if the setting isn't based in our world.

But yeah to contrast Yuffie on the other hand is laced with Japanese tropes, so makes more sense to pronounce her name in a Japanese way. Heck honestly I would say Yuna kinda is too to use an example from the same game-- but Tidus not so much. He's the dumb American tourist.

Well, I believe Titus is a European name either way. Like Roman or Irish or something. Tidus's ultimate sword is the Caladbolg which is Irish in origin which also paints Tidus in a European kinda way.

Anyway the real point is all the stuff related to Tidus in FFX isn't really Japanese in flavor so using that as your base point is broken to begin with. His name really has no reason to be pronounced in a Japanese kind of way, unlike someone like Yuffie.

I mean we basically agree here either way but yeah.

Zanarkand is not inherently a Japanese feeling culture though.

Just because it's a Japanese game doesn't mean all the names in it should inherently be Japanese in origin. Like Jecht is about as far from a Japanese looking name as you can get.

Zanarkand feels more American than anything given the way they place sports on a pedestal and live in general excess.

Well Yuffie makes sense to be pronounced in a Japanese way because Wutai is clearly very Japanese in style. Tifa also just makes sense to be pronounced with an 'ee' sound just by looking at it to me.

Tidus being pronounced that way when you've got an English name (Titus) at odds with that pronunciation and the character name clearly being related to the tides which, again, also at odds with the Japanese pronunciation. Yeah. I'll never say it like that.

Cait Sith is gonna be a hard one to swallow but I'll probably accept it cause like, the name was always weird to me anyway.

Aerith is gonna be tough too just because I'm gonna be hearing the cast of the game say it repeatedly and Aeris just sounds better.

Anyway preview looks awesome. Even that new character looks like he could be hype.

I just hope one of the "wrong" outfits for Don Corneo makes Cloud look like Lightning to a T.

It is a percentage though you just aren't thinking about it because it's not expressed as one.

When you say three hundred less than a single paycheck you're by default setting the absolute floor below 50% because you're leaving them one whole paycheck.

The more poor you are, the further from 50% you should be because you can't afford as many random unexpected expenses as the more rich can. Which is why a flat value is actually more useful than you'd think.

The point is it's still basically saying the same thing. You're still accounting for pay scaling because it's "One whole paycheck + 300 dollars"

The only difference is whether that 300 dollars is an appreciable percentage of your paycheck or not, but I'd say if that 300 is an incredibly minor percentage then it's not as harmful to be riding up near the 50% income line because you have a lot more resilience towards various expenses that may provide huge problems towards those with less income like car repairs, etc.

Saying "300 less" is meaningless without the context of whether your checks are $500 or $5000

I'd strongly disagree percentages are better at giving you a good idea. It's basically the same thing. 60% is meaningless without context too.

Like using your example if you're paying 60% of your monthly income towards rent and your paycheck is $5000, you're still looking at $4000 per month you have to do whatever with. Cost of living be damned I'm sure you're completely fine. $400 per month to do everything but rent, not so much.

There is a lot of talk about memory here but in my experience freezes are more often caused by the hard drive failing or an overheating issue. I dunno if there's a good widely used memtest for a hard drive I usually just use the onboard one you tend to get to by mashing f12 or whatever on startup but yeah not every PC has this. You can also run chkdsk which will telegraph a failing hard drive and fix it a bit by

Window key + r to bring up run
Type cmd and press enter (same procedure as last time, just cmd instead of dxdiag)
Then in the command prompt type chkdsk /r /f

Finding the results of that requires some more work which I can get into later if needed, but you can just run it and check performance after.

Also get that thing Wang linked in post 25 or so to check temps while gaming.

But yeah memory problems more often will just crash your computer outright rather than freezing, from what I've observed.

I am amused that despite being roasted so hard for saying peak TNA was more mainstream relevant than AEW was that AEW has weaker viewership than TNA did for most of its Spike run.

Granted TNA didn't have NXT going up against it and the overall viewership footprint of wrestling is weaker now, as is the overall cable footprint, but it is still kinda funny to me.

And I still haven't heard any lapsed wrestling fans talk about AEW yet for the record! I'm hoping they start but it wrestling as a thing people care about may be a lost cause these days.
