Of course there's also the third option

Both the sun and tides connection were intended and whoever named Tidus was very proud of himself because he was way the hell more clever than whoever named Squall or Cloud.

But yeah it's all kinda irrelevant to pronunciation, as Tidus is not in fact pronounced like tides nor tida.

That's why I'm specifically asking what specific tide references you think push it above the sun references, though.

It can't just be the "he swims"/Blitzball/whatever stuff, since Wakka is "water," so that's a weak connection. I guess you could say something like "He came in with the tide," but that's really only about as strong as saying "Auron is Aurora announcing the arrival of the 'sun'," so those kinda cancel out. You could say he has the water sword, but again, that's from Wakka, the water dude. And Tidus definitely influences Yuna a lot more than the other way around, so the "moon controls the tides" bit doesn't really fit much.

Meanwhile, the "sun" idea is represented in imagery and theme specifically, and it fits with other names thematically.

I'm not saying you're wrong to hold the opinion that it's based on tides, but I do think you're wrong in saying tides makes more sense/sun is more likely to be a coincidence.

That said, while I agree it's likely irrelevant, isn't "tida" pronounced "tee-da?"

Comes in on the tides
Heavy water theming in all sorts of things in his character, not just brotherhood. Yes Wakka and even Rikku also have a lot of these but I mean that doesn't invalidate Tidus's.
Basically gets swept up in the world of Spira which would be like the ocean, influencing the flow of the world around him.
Time mage-- time is often represented as a current like water. The flow of time, etc. Tides ebb and flow with time.

Not really sure what the sun connection is other than "herp sun sigil" and "connection to girl named after moon" and "is blonde" some of which I feel work with either name and some of which could very clearly be coincidental for obvious reasons (I mean you need to pick a hair color-- is Cloud sun related too).

It is

Tidus using the official pronunciation in Kingdom Hearts/Dissidia sounds like Tee-des though not Tee-da. Like the s is clearly pronounced, and it's certainly not "da"

...Doesn't it, though? It's kinda hard to argue "This guy was named after tides because of his water theming" when other characters also have water references, so it's not anything unique to the guy you're trying to argue it for. That definitely makes that seem much more coincidental.

Spira's imagery is obviously the neverending spiral of Sin, based on the name (and Auron basically says as much). Tidus can be seen as the sun who brings them out of the dark age of Sin. You can make any imagery work if you try hard enough, but was it intended?

A lot of your imagery feels like a stretch to me

Also, yeah, Spira is in a pretty dark neverending spiral of death before Tidus shows up. And Tidus happens to shine a light on the issue and fights to bring them out of that spiral.

Like Leon said, you can make pretty much any imagery work.

The issue is that the sun imagery has a basis (The name aligning with the themes of other character names, specifically how Tidus is presented as an opposite to Yuna, who is the "moon," as well as Tidus being represented by the sun sigil), whereas the tide idea isn't actually rooted in anything concrete other than water imagery, which is not unique to Tidus even within the main party.

Again I don't entirely trust any Square interview on it because it's a better story to make all the pieces fit together with how things actually went than to say "well it was open for interpretation a bit and we wanted to name items after planets, then the guy said it this way, then we were like oh that's cool let's run with that"

Like I'm not saying it's necessarily wrong just that lore in general as presented in after the fact interviews has a tendency to be overly neat compared to how things go in the real world. Especially game development which is a very iterative type thing.

Also basis off sun doesn't really definitively hint at pronunciation anyway (because again his name ain't pronounced tida either) but I digress.

Yeah, but your entire argument is based on your own common sense. "This makes the most sense to me, so therefore it has to be right." And thus anything that goes against it, even an official word from Square, gets shot down because it doesn't jive with what you think is the best sense.

So there's really no point in having any further discussion.

I mean the discussion has never been "I'm right," as there's clearly no way to prove that, as much as "what I'm saying is plausible and the sun/moon thing could very well be coincidence and revisionist's history-- and also doesn't really solve the pronunciation argument anyway."

I mean, I doubt it's revisionist history. It seems unlikely that Square made the game and then realized, "Wow, whaddya know? Tidus's name is similar to that word for sun and we gave him the Sun Sigil/Crest. Happy coincidences lawl"

But either way you're speaking from the mindset of a native English speaker regarding a game made by native Japanese speakers.

Yes, about a game that has historic precedent in catering to the native English speakers with its naming schemes.

Like I'm not saying sun/moon was necessarily entirely a 'what do ya know I never expected that?' moment, just that the original intent could very well have been tide, then they're brainstorming themed items or whatever and some cute guy realizes Yuna's name and that tide is close to tida which is sun so they tweak his name etc etc. There are a lot of ways it could have gone. Not all of which are "yeah they are clearly meant to be opposites and this is why we named them that from the start"

Hell Yuna's name may not have even always been Yuna. That could have come down the line too. We really don't know the true story, and never will, because we'd sooner be fed sterile stories about how a game company who takes 10 years and 3 generations to make a game has everything down pat the first time.

So you're suggesting that they just happened to accidentally give Tidus and Yuna names similar to the Okinawan words for sun and moon, accidentally gave Tidus the sun sigil, gave him the bright imagery and personality, and then afterwards were like "Oh look how convenient this is for us!"

And you suggest that coincidence is more likely than "water = tides" being a coincidence?

Hmm, okay.

By using Romanized English names, sure.

But Tidus isn't really associated with water other than being a blitzball player, and he's not even the only blitzball player in your party.

(Sun and moon don't necessarily designate "opposite" anyway. They can be complementary since the moon reflects the sun's light and Yuna didn't have the courage to stand against the cycle until she met Tidus, etc.)

To be fair, this is kinda a silly argument to base anything on, because I could just as easily say Cloud's name was meant to be Heihachi and Squall's name was meant to be Kazuya but at some point in development of each game they decided twice that allowing their love of Tekken to shine through in naming probably wasn't a great idea, and you can't prove it wasn't that way so my argument is extremely valid and so Cloud's actually based on Heihachi and Squall's based on Kazuya and Zidane's original name was Buttsniffer.

Like Cloud's and Squall's names actually fit their dispositions. They gave Zack the last name "Fair" (as opposed to "Strife") to highlight how different he is from Cloud.

Tidus's name being connected to the sun fits his disposition because he's bright, often forceful, and doesn't let anything get in his way.
