I really liked how rewarding it felt to go after the towers. The best parts of the game were seeing a tower off in the distance, pinning it on the map, and then having it in your sights the whole time you're hiking like literally 20-30 minutes to get there

Maybe I'll try a Far Cry game sometime but it seems like the typical sort of gritty realistic shooter that I never really get into - a big part of the reason I like BotW so much is that it has a lot of warmth to it, it's a very relaxing and pleasant place to be even though it's a post-apocalyptic land swarming with monsters. It just kind of has a vibe to it that I can't recall seeing in another game like this - like I really gave Skyrim my best try but the game experience felt a little too dry for me

If you prefer BOTW's non-dungeons over the regular Zelda dungeons, then you don't like the regular dungeons. If you think BOTW's is better for not having progression, then you don't like the regular item-gathering formula. It's really simple and there's nothing to be ashamed of. The vast majority of people agree with you.

I think it would be good if every weapon's durability was improved by about 50%, but other than that I have no issues with the weapon system at all

I like the fact that Breath of the Wild's world doesn't have a million and one things in it. That kind of open world structure is a bit overwhelming because there's like this pressure to go here, then there, then here, then there, and there's no time to breathe. With Breath of the Wild, everything's leisurely. You can start going somewhere, get curious about something along the way, and then get back to what you were originally doing, or just not. It's great.

I adore Wind Waker for much of the same reasons as I adore Breath of the Wild (although BotW does it better) so we do have to part ways on this one

I don't know how to say this un-snarkily but I just don't see Twilight Princess as the last game to properly take up the Zelda mantle, I feel like I would have to have an extremely narrow definition of Zelda games to say that and then not include Skyward Sword or A Link Between Worlds

I mean, I guess part of it for me is that Twilight Princess is also one of my least favorite Zeldas, so I just don't have any romanticization for that style really, my favorite Zeldas aren't the ones people like

I'm currently hunting for frogs to upgrade armor. I was chasing one and it ran away and jumped straight off the edge of a cliff to escape me. I burst out laughing at how funny it looked from the angle I saw it at - it was this weird little moment but I appreciated it. There's countless numbers of those little moments.

For me, in Breath of the Wild exploration is its own reward. I do appreciate when the game gives me rupees (I am eternally poor) or fast travel points or whatever, but I don't NEED it to create a meaningful experience.

Yeah, like, every time I went somewhere random I usually ended up progressing the game in some way, at least, either by opening up a new area or getting a bunch of money or important collectables or whatever, and like, I dunno, I just don't see how it's different from most other Zelda games which are generally the same kinda deal

I'm okay with the core Zelda formula but I kinda feel like BotW has all the core Zelda stuff in it anyway aside from like, item progression, which I can live without

The complaints about there not being any dungeons is confusing to me in a game with four dungeons, I like them more than most of the dungeons in other Zelda games even if they're a little shorter and more compact

I do think the shrines could stand to be a little less repetitive and samey looking though, like it would be nice if there were like, just a few different color palettes to the shrines, maybe based on which part of the world they're in or something.

I just felt like the vast majority of the world is dotted with some kind of interesting feature of some sort - there's a ton of unique weird areas that you have to navigate for shrine quests, or places that you find that add up to more than just like a lousy collectable, like fairy fountains or weird NPCs hanging out somewhere - and also, like, maybe this is where we differ but I love finding interesting physical features just for their own sake, not every part of the world has to be like, super meaningful, sometimes it's fun to just find a little pond and maybe there's a korok seed or it's just a good spot for fish or herbs or something, like, I dunno - just running around the world felt like its own reward and I feel like if they had to cram every inch of the world with some sort of unique thing it would be distracting and also the game would've taken 3 more years to make, so, eh

Enemy variety could be better I guess but I never really noticed. I guess there ARE a lot of lizalfos. I wasn't really itching to be in combat all the time.

I understand people feelings about the ending, but the way I see it it's meant to be a Twilight Zone-esque punishment by fate. The Death Note is a cursed object. Whether you write it in it or not, attempting to use it will bring nothing but misfortune in the end. Minoru was clever, but even he couldn't outplay karma. That's simply the moral.

I am almost completely unfamiliar with Death Note aside from the VERY basic premise, but I strongly agree with both of these posts. I thought the ending was precisely what needed to happen in order for this to be an interesting tale. If that doesn't happen then this is too clean.

All seems mainstream enough to me! I mean, I'm not a wrestling games person, but I love Simpsons Arcade and Tecmo Super bowl and I think ZATM is pretty good as well (but it's not a personal fave of mine)

What exactly does "youtube videos" mean here? And if you're going to collect from random YouTube videos, why not do the same for, say, random gaming forums such as B8? I get that there's a time and effort component, but there should either be some sort of minimum standard that excludes truly random YouTube videos, or there should be no minimum standard beyond a basic level of coherent explanation for choices.

Again, we see arbitrary exclusion of lists containing games that arguably deserve to be in contention regardless of their probable weakness as games. Why should a list "reading too much like a best selling list" automatically invalidate its opinions? Likewise, why should including arguably the single most influential game of the decade on a list concerning games of the decade be any reason to strike out that list?

First point's fair, but I totally get what he's doing on the second point. When he says he's filtering out 'best selling' lists I think he means that he's filtering out lists that don't seem to be based just on the person's own opinion, which is what he's looking for specifically, so he's applying what I think is a due level of discretion to avoid including lists like this. It's sort of double-counting certain games if you're awarding them points for being best-selling, as a result of someone compiling a list meant for a general audience (not just gamers) about what the most popular-by-objective-metrics games of the decade were. I don't think he's excluding lists that are too generic, he's just excluding lists that really are not meant to read like an opinion piece.

And, well, I just agree with him about Angry Birds. Sorry, but not sorry. I think he's within his rights to make this call, especially since he stated up front that he was doing it.

I started replaying Portal 2 last night and it made me feel like I underranked it when I put it at #21 - everything from the ceaselessly witty dialog, to the in-game cutscenes that make you feel like you're on a theme park ride, to even the music is just really, really well done. My only problem so far is that the puzzles feel surprisingly dull-edged because I've been playing so many puzzle games in the last couple of years, haha, but it's a minor complaint, they're still very fun. I think I like the more narratively-oriented structure of Portal 2 compared to Portal 1, too, I just like seeing the different ways the story uses a linear but dynamic environment to tell a story.

Also, the list is worth reading just for the quotes chosen for each game.

Very cool list. I'd been wondering for a while what a list would look like if you did this, so I'm glad someone went to the trouble.

although as far as the games you've played go, 1-5/2-4/3-5 are damn well near equal in length and 1-4 is almost half as short as the rest

I feel like that sense of "catchiness", not just in the music but in the overall presentation in a way, is something that modern games don't really value as much, and that western games have NEVER valued as much, but it's something I really value.

Possible spoilers for future lists of mine but yeah Tecmo Super Bowl is a top 100 for me too. I just love how fun everything about the game is - like not just the simple-but-entertaining football gameplay that is surprisingly advanced for a 1991 (?) game, but also the visuals and the music, it just evokes this feeling of a more joyful and optimistic version of the NFL than anything that's ever actually existed. The tunes are so goddamn catchy and the graphics are such a fun encapsulation of like, Japan's distanced idea of what american football is like. I semi-frequently download the fan-made patches that update the rosters (and teams) in the game and play through a season or two, it's still more fun to me than any Madden game will ever be. Madden just feels like a joyless experience compared to Tecmo Super Bowl.
