Well, if we're posting stuff that was free anyway...

Exit Fate is a fan-made RPG that's very heavily influenced by the Suikoden series.

Download link: http://site.scfworks.com/?page_id=10

Site w/ guides & info: https://exitfate.webs.com/about.htm

Great plot, over 70 recruitable characters and a castle HQ, full scale tactical army battles.... All that good stuff. The magic system is unique...party shares spells and the Qty of them is how many times per battle they can be used; everyone has a "MP+" stat which generates that amount of MP each turn to charge up for the big spells.

Unemployment is taxed, but you can choose to not have the tax withheld and pay whatever is due on tax day, so it's like an interest free loan equal to your tax burden. Still a big advantage over normal wage work, where you have to get taxes taken out every paycheck.

And if you only raise the pay of people under X amount by a significant amount, you fuck over anyone over X amount.

Here's some better ideas:
  1. FIX THE FUCKING BILL that hands out the crazy +$600/week in unemployment
  2. Stop having the middle class play the lottery w/ their all time favorite game of, "do you make under this arbitrary limit so you can be a big winner?!", stop half assing this, and just blanket give everyone a UBI.

Yeah. That kind of sucked. When getting to a new place, I could probably get it at the very end of some of the stronger enemies. But once you can actually fight the really strong enemies and use it, it feels awesome to do it. Especially to them multiple times. Like with the special enemies and stuff...
If you have the DLC (which you do, if you have Torna), you can set individual parameters for difficulty. I ended up putting most of them on the slightly easier side but cranked up the health so I could actually keep enemies around long enough to do Driver combos and Full Bursts.
Although, it's fun for a while but eventually every combat feels the same regardless of what enemy it is. Giving the really powerful enemies huge power spikes below half health...just further encourages you to do the same 'ol stack up orbs, then do Full Burst thing, too.
Also perhaps even worse...it makes all the characters and blades feel kinda same-y and generic. No matter who or what it is, you're just trying to layer on each color then smash them w/ the opposite color. Rinse. Repeat.

The biggest issue I see a lot of people having with the combat is how long it takes to get rolling, which I can understand. By mid-game, you've got plenty of arts to juggle and synergise and whatnot, and that's really interesting (especially if you start playing around with different PC's), but the first couple hours of "autoattack while waiting 12 seconds for Backstab to come off cooldown" are a little rough. New arts do roll in pretty quickly, though, and cooldowns get improved as they level up, so I personally feel it gains the depth it needs quickly enough to stay engaging.
I think you get like 3 arts initially, and enemies don't have much health early on, so I don't remember it being particularly dull.
And pretty early on you get Visions and Chain Attacks, which on top of the ever-expanding list of arts and upgrades, adds a ton of depth to the combat quickly.

Yeah, most buildings you can't go in. It's the outdoor areas that are vast.
Maybe not quite as large compared to more recent games, but when it came out a decade ago, the world was freaking huge!

I really don't like game worlds to be too massive anyway, though.

If that matters to you though, the world of Xenoblade Chronicles X is probably 2x or 3x the size of XC1's, and the exploration is even better overall. Of course, aside from exploration and combat, XCX falls short of XC1 in nearly every other way, especially plot...

i haven't played any of them xenoblades... I heard they were good, but I have no idea what their deal is.
At the very least, play Xenoblade Chronicles 1, it's one of the best games of all time.
It's considered open world (in reality, it's linear/structured, but the world is so vast w/ so much optional stuff "off to the side" that it doesn't seem like it) and is incredible in scope and so fun to explore.
The story isn't anything new exactly, but is just really well told with tons of amazing plot twists w/ foreshadowing so none of them feel like bs pulled out of nowhere just for the sake of it. The characters are all interesting and may seem at first to fit into typical JRPG tropes but get character growth and shatter a fair number of those assumptions. And they have probably the best English voice acting I've ever heard in a game, which helps a lot, too.

The combat is probably the one area that rubs some the wrong way.... I don't play nor have interest in MMOs, but a lot of people compare it to MMOs. I really liked it, though. It's all in real time and all of the enemies are seen as you explore (no transition to a "battle screen" -- sometimes other creatures will wander into an existing fight and join in). Characters will auto attack on their own, but it doesn't do much damage so you can't just sit back and let the game play itself. Instead...each character has special abilities called arts. You can choose which ones to set to the character and level them up individually, allowing for different "builds" for each character (along with passive skills and other stuff that you pick and choose). Arts generally are available at the start of battle and once used have a cool down before they can be used again. Most have conditions where they're most effective (getting behind an enemy, using it after a status effect has been applied, etc...), so there's a lot of tactical considerations to make in real time. There's also an aggro system, and spamming arts in rapid succession will quickly draw it from enemies all on you and get you killed.

The music is also amazing...Really, everything is nearly perfect w/ XC1.

It's getting a Switch port on May 29, that's a good chance to jump in. Or get the older version on Wii, virtual console, or new 3DS.

The idea is this helps the economy by putting money back in to it. If my wife and I both get laid off money is gonna be VERY tight. Our 1 BR apartment is $1,400/month and that's considered "cheap" for San Diego. We'd basically have to really tighten our belts for awhile until things get back to normal. The problem with that, is that means even less money is going into the economy, so more people are getting laid off, businesses going under, etc. Part of why the Great Depression was so bad was because the Hoover administration's response was to initially do nothing, and just tell people to tighten their belts up more which managed to collapse the economy even more.
It's putting money into specific lucky pockets and not others'. If someone was getting by with their wages before, they don't need an unemployment check that exceeds those wages. Getting unemployment is fine. Suddenly getting $25/hr from unemployment when you were getting $15/hr before and others in essential jobs are still working and making that $15/hr...is not fine.

And again...I get it, CA is stupid expensive. CA is free to pump in some extra money to its unemployment and other services to help people afford the crazy cost of living. Though $1400 is way less than I thought it'd be there...that's really not far off the rents I've had...

Finally...you could give everyone a million dollars. They're still not gonna go to a sit in restaurant or movie theater. No amount of hand outs is going to "stimulate the economy" by getting people to go to businesses that can't stay open anyway.

I think Congress royally fucked over grocery store employees and other "essential" employees forced to work at their existing low wages while handing out an insane +$600/wk to unemployed people.
It's nice that Safeway is increasing the pay a bit, but it's still way less than the employees would make if Safeway just laid them off.
And all such employees are trapped in their situation because leaving your job b/c "It's bull shit that people make more sitting home than I do working" isn't a valid reason to collect unemployment. As the people in Congress who defended the absurd increase were quick to point out.

Well, part of my problem is I'm picky...

D&D 3.5 ideally, 3.0 or PF is...tolerable (though man am I out of the loop w/ PF, haven't looked at it much in like 5 years). Not really interested in other systems.
Well, some really obscure ones like Arcana Evolved, but that's even less likely than a 3E game.

The first game I ever ran, I did through AIM chat...somehow... Just describing positions and stuff. No idea how I made it work, would never want something like that again.
Maptools lets you import pictures to use as maps and lays a grid down on it. You can resize the grid to effectively re-size the map. You can bring in images to use as "tokens" to use like you would minis in a face to face game, but with all sorts of macros you can add in to automate various rolls and functions. It's really great but has a steep initial learning curve (having a pre-built template of common macros can help a lot). Other main issues are that:
  • There's no "lobby" for players to meet up before the DM creates the server (so a 2ndary program like Skype or Discord is a must)
  • Creating a server can be tough at first if you need to configure your router settings (firewall, port blocking, etc...)
  • Some people seem to have severe connection issues. Like...it may go fine for everyone, won't know till you try. But I've seen several people over several different maptools games disconnect frequently. sometimes not for an hour, sometimes like every 5 min. No idea why. For most, it works fine...
  • It's a pretty big resource hog. If you have an older computer or like to run a lot of stuff alongside the game program, it can be an issue.
But besides those issues, it's better than other virtual table tops I've tried pretty much across the board

The crisis highlights the importance of ubiquitous broadband internet. Whether that means it should be a public (as in publically owned) utility is another question enitrely that nothing about this crisis proves in any way. "Like water, gas, and electricity." Gas and electric utilities are sometimes publicly owned, but usually are private. You can make a "common sense" argument about the objectives we should have in terms of access and quality of internet connections, but there's absolutely nothing close to an obvious "common sense" solution when it comes to the regulatory structure surrounding it, that's incredibly complicated, and this article like so many others glosses right over all of that.
Public utlity =/= publicly owned
It means it's recognized as an essential service and is regulated by a public utlities board.

Phone, electric, gas... none of these are government-owned. They're regulated by them, though. And there are restrictions in place to ensure people can't have their service terminated easily.

https://qz.com/1826043/the-coronavirus-crisis-proves-internet-should-be-a-public-utility/

The spread of the novel coronavirus around the world has made many of us shut-ins and proven conclusively that the internet should be a public utility. Its a basic necessity in the 21st century, like running water, gas, and electricity. Indeed, the United Nations in 2016 declared that internet access is a human right.

Internet service providerslike Comcastrecognize this, as evidenced by recent announcements that in these unusual times theyre relaxing data restrictions, offering free service for a limited period, suspending disconnections, and hooking up new customers. Meanwhile, many American public schools have issued laptops to students who couldnt afford them, hoping the extended disruption to studies wont disproportionately affect the poor, although this doesnt necessarily mean every kids household will be connected to the internet.
That is all very nice for now. But these charitable actions only highlight the need for widespread access regardless of economic circumstances.

Perhaps after the pandemic panic gives way to a new state of normalcy, the people will demand inexpensive and reliable high-quality broadband, and maybe private internet service providers will have to sing a different tune. They already recognize that access is essential, based on their response to the coronavirus quarantines. That will make it harder to walk back the admissions and concessions theyre making today, and they may well find that if they dont want to keep playing nice, a time will come when theyre no longer necessary because the game has totally changed.

Some snips from an article that should be fucking common sense, but apparently needs to be stated.
Imagine if we were forced to stay inside w/o internet. No teleworking. No online banking. No Amazon or other online services. It's a fucking joke that cable television is considered a utility but internet service is not.

I was told the news is reporting that something else will be the "next shortage" ...which basically guarantees it will be cause the media just scare-mongered people into believing it. *sigh*
I don't think I should even mention what item it was, lest I commit the same act I'm berating the media for.

Been playing Kingdoms of Amalur, like I was before the great shutdown. Getting close to the end finally... I still telework a full schedule so I don't actually have a lot more time than usual to play.

I guess this would be an ideal time to get Hyrule Warriors on Switch. I put in 450 hours on the Wii U and swore, good as the game was, I never wanted to redo all of that again. But now....seems more feasible.

It's a shame Xenoblade Chronicles Definitive Edition won't be out till May 29... That's a game I'd just get lost in and stay up all night playing, even taking time off work to do so...

Fresh broccoli is fine, I buy that too.
Usually goes bad in a week though, so I don't get much.
Often if I'm making a stir fry, I have to go to the frozen stuff b/c I don't have enough/any fresh broccoli left.

The frozen broccoli is fine for cooking with.

Ok, the TP situation continues to be fucking stupid. Managed to get a single 12-pack of it after trying 3 stores and having to look for a pallet of it walmart had left on the other end of the store than the aisle it's supposed to be in.
But I got it!

...What the fuck is the deal with the frozen broccoli hoarding? That's been cleared out completely in every store I've gone to for the past 2 weeks now.
Is it the same for anyone else?
Why is no one talking about this?
When did broccoli become so damn popular? I've always loved it, but I thought most people in the U.S. did not...

The harm is that republicans rely heavily on voter suppression to stay in power, so they would never do something that helps people vote.
I know they wouldn't WANT to help increase voter turn out.
But given the situation, they may be forced to actually help the country instead of themselves for once. Especially if their own constituents start complaining about being scared to go to the polls.

At the very least, as soon as the economic package is done, Democrats need to hit this issue and hit it hard, right away. Draft a bill for mass mail in balloting. If Republicans shoot it down, make sure the public knows full well whose fault it is that they have to choose between voting or being safe.
Dems roll over and play dead way too fucking much.
