Fact of the matter, the cops action of kneeling relaxed that crowd. They were no longer standoffish. People were cheering and it sounded like many people were getting ready to take a knee themselves in solidarity. The situation was on its way to being deescalated....then the cops immediately escalated it again. So protocol or not, how about just exercise a little thought and common sense and dont shoot the tear gas when you dont need to.

The police are there to re-establish order in the city. That means dispersing crowds. You can choose to leave, which is your safest option but sadly ends your protest; fight back, which is the most dangerous option but at least you are still actively involved; or you can stand there with your phone out recording because you have no training and understanding of crowd control tactics and dont realize youre about to get tear-gassed to the face.

A lot of people have been choosing option three.

the "only .1% of cops are bad!" crowd needs to see this. here we have a public example of a cop trying to show solidarity and be "good"...and his colleagues immediately jumped to stop him. Now consider how often this happens behind the scenes, when no cameras are rolling. He'll probably now be chastised and picked on by his colleagues. It feeds the notion that the good cops aren't able to think freely and actually do good out of fear of being attacked by their co-workers.. THAT'S the issue. THAT'S the problem people are fighting to fix.

It's a pretty common belief that when you are thrown into prison you basically need to adapt, be tough and ally yourself with the right people in order to get through it. Often losing your humanity in the process.

I wonder how similar these mindsets are in police departments. Except it's just about fitting into that culture instead of trying to survive a sentence.

the major difference is those in prison, especially those serving long sentences, won't be exposed to normal life and every day civilians. the have no choice but to adapt to their new way of life. Cops not only interact with every day citizens daily, but will eventually take the uniform off and become an everyday citizen, everyday.

i think regardless of intent or not, choosing to beat him after that was wrong. He is the one who put the mans hand there, if it was a mistake, that's his mistake. the man wasn't resisting to fight them, he was probably scared as hell because cops were piling on him and not too long ago another man died in the same circumstances. Cop was just happy he got an "excuse" to punch him for no reason.

Im also ok with that. The school doesnt have to give scholarships out. They are earned and with them comes responsibilities to said school. You already have to get chosen for a school. How is this any different? If they decide she is no longer worthy of upholding the standard they see fit for that scholarship, then its better off going to someone else who will. Plenty of people who deserve them dont get them. Scholarships arent a right theyre a privilege. She got it and pissed away her privilege. Now someone more deserving will get it.

now I am for strong tuition reform but that aspect doesnt really apply here.

My political leanings dont matter. I am of the opinion that if you work for someone you represent them by extension. They have a right to decide who they would like to associate with. Do you think that her comments could cause friction with other co workers? With managers? With customers if they are a sales company? They have every right to protect that aspect of their company.

freedom of expression isn't at risk. she expressed herself and is still free. the cops didn't arrest her for it. freedom of speech does not mean freedom from consequences. if i walk up to someone and say "i think you're a fuckin bitch" should they be sympathetic or would it be understandable if they get mad and hit me? Ideally yea, it would be cool if everyone could be the bigger person, but i also understand that i had the hit coming and asked for it. And if i was caught saying something dumb i usually faced consequences. Just because its easier to notice the dumb shit now doesn't mean i should feel bad for her having said it. If i walked outside right now and said "man fuck Floyd, stop talking about him" and got jumped that's my own fault. The school she went to, who gave her a scholorsip and will be represented by her as an Alumni also has the right to know who they're letting in.
