Figured I might ask this here since I'm sure some of you play Pokemon. How is the story for Gen 7?
I know, "lol Literally playing Pokemon for the story." :P

I play for the gameplay, and I'm not into the competitive side, so I figured I might as well enjoy the story while I'm at it. Already bought Ultra Sun thinking the Ultra series was the better versions, and then I found out that the stories for SM and USUM are different from each other. Exactly how different are they? Did I get the short end of the stick?

Haven't played a Pokemon game since Blue and Silver because it started to feel repetitive during gen 3, so I stopped for a long time. But I recently bought Crystal for the nostalgia and enjoyed the gameplay then realized what makes the main series fun for me, which led to me buying Ultra Sun.

If you want to play a Pokemon game for the story then you gotta play the Mystery Dungeon spinoffs. That's where the real good stories are at. But to answer your question uh, tbh I still haven't finished the gen 7 games yet, but the stories are competent enough from what I played and read about them. I dunno. I feel like Pokemon stories mostly get dunked on just because they're simple stories, but it's not like they're really bad stories or anything. I thought ORAS in particular had a really good presentation. Gen 5 is generally regarded as having the best stories for the main series. Mystery Dungeon spinoffs have at least good or sometimes better stories than BW in my opinion.

Real talk, I've been meaning to get back into YYH because I haven't seen it since I was too young and stupid to remember anything about it. That describes a...distressing amount of anime for me these days. I only relatively recently watched Cowboy Bebop. So yeah, I got a lot of old anime to catch up on, let alone some of the new anime I wanna watch. So TLDR, sell me on YYH please.

Oh, and it's not exactly an action series, but I also want to recommend Dr. Stone. All the humans on Earth turn to stone, then 3,700 years later a high school student with a passion for science "wakes up" and takes it upon himself to save the rest of humanity from their stony prisons and bring back modern technology. What makes Senku such an interesting protagonist is that he's overpowered purely from an intellectual standpoint; he can do basically anything he sets out to do with the power of science, but he's entirely reliant on having extra manpower just to make any actual progress. All he could ever manage on his own was gather enough food to keep himself alive. So he's overpowered in a way, but in a way that's balanced around not being able to do everything on his own.

Basically it has all the best parts of a good shonen series, but streamlined so that there's very little if any filler. Being animated by Ufotable probably helps too, because the fight at the end of episode 19 is nothing short of breathtaking.

What happened with mine was that I got super nauseous from the pain meds and puked my guts up about 8 hours after the surgery. That causes the blood clot on that socket to come lose. Apparently in your mouth you only get one clot/scab unlike other body parts, so the tissue just becomes exposed and inflamed.

Ouch, sounds rough. If it makes you feel any better I did puke immediately after having a sip of a milkshake. Worst inconvenience I dealt with after that was getting food stuck in the sockets. Guess I really did get off lucky.

Can't help but feel like I got off lucky with my wisdom teeth removal. Worst I had to deal with was the post-anesthesia nausea, then as soon as I got home I slept for 5-6 hours and bounced right back to my usual energy level without any residual pain. Apparently that wasn't supposed to happen lol.

Ill need to give it another try. I did really like how you can build your own camp and see it take shape. I got to where you take your whole crew up to some ice place in the north looking for treasure. Not sure how far that is. Virizion was there, who I dont like, and I seem to remember Keldeo too but not sure

I don't remember exactly how far that is, but it definitely sounds like you hadn't met Hydreigon yet, so I'd say you haven't seen the best parts of the story yet. There's a scene later on that still sticks out to me as particularly brutal even for PMD's standards. You'll know that scene when you see it lol.

I could not get into gates honestly. I hated the starters you got to choose from. The gen 5 starters are easily the weakest ever IMO (Aside from Samurott who is among my favorites ever, but I dont like Oshawott) Pikachu and Axew are fine, but only having 5 is such a bad decision. The story did not pull me as much either. Idk. It just did not feel as strong as Sky or Super

That's a shame. It's legitimately my 2nd favorite PMD game just because I like the characters so much. Sure it's easy as sleeping, but I really do think the characters make up for it.

On the other hand, Super is my favorite game to actually play just because it's actually a little challenging. This series is weird like that.

Yeah its so fucking good. I thought Super Mystery Dungeon was great and when I finished it I thought it was just as good as Sky. Looking back, its not, but it is the closest a MD game has come to what Sky is

Have you played Gates? I thought Gates' characters were better written than most of Super's characters, and maybe even better than some of Explorers' characters. Explorers may have had the better overall plot, but Gates really nailed the character writing. I especially liked how you had more plot relevant characters join your team throughout the game. If another PMD game ever gets made, I really hope it copies the ensemble cast dynamic that Gates had.

Also what is the online thing? I dont really see why Im giving people a thumbs up after a level?

So sometimes when you're playing a mission, that mission also takes place at the same time as another character's mission. If you're observant enough, you can even sometimes see another player doing their own thing in the background of whatever mission you're playing. Unfortunately there aren't actually that many missions where players can fight side by side. IIRC the online functionality only really means anything at the end of Mission 7 where Nero and V are present, and during the entirety of Mission 13 where all three playable characters are present. If you give someone a thumbs up they get a gold orb, and that's basically it. It's pretty interesting in theory, but a little half-baked in execution.

I don't blame you for not liking V, he's universally considered the weakest part of the game from a gameplay standpoint. One thing I will insist on is that at least one of his familiars (Griffon/Shadow) be mapped to a shoulder button. Makes it easier to use them both at the same time. They Stalemate faster on higher difficulties, so you should also get in the habit of dodging around when they're in danger so they don't take more damage than they need to. And like previously mentioned, summoning Nightmare will instantly revive them. When playing as V, keeping his familiars alive is the most important thing to keep in mind considering they're directly linked to his mobility options.

DT Stinger is fun to spam, and when you have Devil Sword Dante you get some additional effects on certain moves. Like Balrog's Real Impact for example, when used in Devil Trigger you'll conjure up spinning swords to hold the enemy in place. It's mostly one of those things you just have to experiment with. That's just the kind of series DMC is.

What's not to get about it? Just press whatever button it's assigned to and you do more damage and regen health (as Nero and Dante), while playing as V you use it to revive familiars and for burst damage from Nightmare, and that's about it. Hold Devil Trigger button while playing as Dante to use Sin Devil Trigger when you just wanna wreck everything.

Something to keep in mind is that Super makes references to past games, and half the fun of those references is actually being familiar with where they're from. They're all worth playing at some point tbh. With Rescue Team, half the fun is seeing just how much you can break the difficulty curve. Being able to have duplicate moves (combine this with multi-hitting moves, and then link said moves to really subject enemies to multi-hitting hell), completely shutting down single enemies with Skitty (because only the main character has a gender in this game), the works. GtI has Axew as a starter, and that's always fun. Just casually spam Dragon Dance and Dual Chop like it's going out of style. Explorers (and Rescue Team) has Smokescreen and Mirror Move shenanigans, Explorers of Sky has Vulpix with a roided out version of Imprison...and I'm digressing again. Point is, Pre-Super games had some wacky balancing decisions, so have fun with that!

that's unfortunate, it's a great game. one of the greatest of all time, imo. but tbh most of its "realism" comes from the difficulty at the beginning, and you outgrow that by the end. it does actually veer into wacky woohoo power fantasies territory once you get all leveled and geared up.

I mean, yeah, I kind of expect any RPG to veer into wacky woohoo power fantasy territory by the end, it just doesn't look like something I'd actually enjoy playing. I'm more the instant gratification type of gamer and I'll be entirely shameless about that. If the early game is a slog, then that's a major turnoff for me. With that in mind I'm not entirely sure why I ever liked the Tales of series tbh. But nowadays I just prefer games that put their best foot forward, know what I mean?

Thanks, and I would like to do so. Which of the Dungeon spin-offs would you say is the best?

Just my personal opinion of course, but storywise:

Explorers of Sky>Gates to Infinity>Super>Rescue Team

EoS has my favorite overall story, but I think Gates has (for the most part) better written characters. Super starts off kinda slow, then the second half is kinda rushed, but I still prefer the story of this game over Rescue Team's. Rescue Team doesn't have a bad plot by any means, it's just...not as refined. As far as actually playing them though, I kinda prefer Super. Each of the previous games had a few starter combinations that would just make the entire game easy mode, but in Super you're encouraged to rely on items and strategy more than just brute forcing everything. This is most exemplified by the fact that Blast Seeds outdamage your individual party members for most of the story, and an early game sidequest has you facing off against a Salamence of all things, and if you try to brute force that battle it's just gonna show you a bad time.

Got a little sidetracked, anyway, TLDR: Explorers has the best story, Gates is underrated, Super has the best gameplay.

Kingdom Come: Deliverance

It's one of those games where the more I hear about it, the less I actually want to play it. Maybe I just don't like "realistic" games, I don't know and I don't particularly care, I'll just stick to my wacky woohoo power fantasies, thank you kindly.

Kind of a similar reason for why I'll never get into Soulsborne or the new God of War, they're just not my preferred blend of action game. Why should I settle for either of these when DMC 5 exists? Also for Soulsborne, not being able to pause is a major deal breaker for me. If a game doesn't respect my real world obligations, then I don't necessarily see that as an endearing trait.
