Yeah its so fucking good. I thought Super Mystery Dungeon was great and when I finished it I thought it was just as good as Sky. Looking back, its not, but it is the closest a MD game has come to what Sky is

Have you played Gates? I thought Gates' characters were better written than most of Super's characters, and maybe even better than some of Explorers' characters. Explorers may have had the better overall plot, but Gates really nailed the character writing. I especially liked how you had more plot relevant characters join your team throughout the game. If another PMD game ever gets made, I really hope it copies the ensemble cast dynamic that Gates had.

Idk. Maybe they wanted a mainline Pokmon game. Everyone I have talked to who has played it has said it is an outstanding game. No one I know said it was bad, or even just good.

Have you played Gates? I thought Gates' characters were better written than most of Super's characters, and maybe even better than some of Explorers' characters. I could not get into gates honestly. I hated the starters you got to choose from. The gen 5 starters are easily the weakest ever IMO (Aside from Samurott who is among my favorites ever, but I dont like Oshawott) Pikachu and Axew are fine, but only having 5 is such a bad decision. The story did not pull me as much either. Idk. It just did not feel as strong as Sky or Super

You talking about the mew thing right? Ill be honest, I didnt see it coming. I thought the ending would be similar to the previous games but that curveball got me good.

and the rescue team games have aged horribly imo. I cant play them anymore. After meeting nine tails, like 90% the game is doing random jobs. It sucks

That's a shame. It's legitimately my 2nd favorite PMD game just because I like the characters so much. Sure it's easy as sleeping, but I really do think the characters make up for it.

On the other hand, Super is my favorite game to actually play just because it's actually a little challenging. This series is weird like that.

Ill need to give it another try. I did really like how you can build your own camp and see it take shape. I got to where you take your whole crew up to some ice place in the north looking for treasure. Not sure how far that is

As emotional as I was when I played the first game, I'd probably rank it last myself after having played the others after it.

Virizion was there, who I dont like, and I seem to remember Keldeo too but not sure

I don't remember exactly how far that is, but it definitely sounds like you hadn't met Hydreigon yet, so I'd say you haven't seen the best parts of the story yet. There's a scene later on that still sticks out to me as particularly brutal even for PMD's standards. You'll know that scene when you see it lol.

Apparently critics generally don't get to play the whole game when making reviews, they only spend a few hours on it. In PMD a lot of the payoff hinges on the story and its ending, though, which the critics don't see when writing the review.

Plus, being a roguelike, even the gameplay isn't quite everyone's thing. It's fun, but IMO the story is the series' main draw.

Basically, focus more on user reviews. Critic reviews are bad metrics.

They really weren't though. The stories in particular were better than anything the main games put out. They're even kinda fun to play too, especially Super Mystery Dungeon.

missed out on explorers of sky, but at the time red rescue team and explorers of darkness were 2 of my favourite games, and the 3ds ones are pretty good

Also Totodile was my go-to main character for the first two games. Don't care about the quizzes. >_>

I still get the feels when I hear the final song when you are fighting Primal Dialga. Such a good but sad sounding song >.>

It's good, not great. Gameplay is fun but gets repetitive after a while and later in the game there's too much random annoying shit that can happen in dungeons. Story is also hugely overrated, it's fine but nothing special. For every good part it has, it has an annoying part, and it tends to have about twice as much text as is actually necessary to get the point of any given scene across. Plus I'm not fond of the setup for the postgame, few things in game stories bug me more than the fake tragedy angle, and this game pulls a big one with the ending seeming to be all bittersweet with the main character basically retconning themselves away with the rest of the bad future, but then just kidding! Totally gets to live on. This isn't the worst example of it since at least there's a reasonable justification in that Dialga having the power to make that happen makes sense, but it still annoys me when a story tries to go for emotional appeal with a big character death only to take the easy way out and not have it stick.
