And just to relax a little bit after all the driving. Something good and bad about my job is no extra pay for overtime. Instead of more money, you get more time. So, Ill make the same amount of money working longer hours. But that means I can use that extra time to get days off. Which I could either rest, or go to another job to make even more money. Sometimes (rarely) I'll work 7-7.5 hours and I don't tell my boss. Never hear anything about it. If I need to leave earlier it's no problem as long as I notify my boss. Got to choose my own start time, they'd let me adjust it depending on my needs at home. Is it salary or wage? I know for the Air Force (on my base), they sometimes dont care if we dont stay the whole 8 hours. KillerAndroid posted... There is nothing official really. HR doesnt like to touch on this subject as it really depends on your role and I work for a fairly large institution, but I noticed the de facto core hours are between 10 and 4. You can expect everyone to be there between those hours. My job at the bus station is kind of like that. And as long as Im there for those, I can come in early or late or whatever. Since I dont exactly have core hours, I can kind of make my own. So, I just have to be there for 9 hours of the day (within a reasonable time). Though, one hour is for lunch. I can also get breakfast. And I have 3 hours of gym time per pay period. I can split it anyway I want. 3 one hour sessions, 6 half hour sessions, or a 3 hour session. Because of this job, it helps me make my hours for my other job, as well... I think thats about it... Every job I have ever had, you need to give them notice and use saved PTO for holidays off. Working on holidays I usually get holiday pay, (my past hourly jobs it was time and a half, or double time) or a bonus. Most career jobs are closed on that day. So, if they didn't pay you, you'd be missing a day of work, even if you wanted to work. That would cut your hours short for the week. Which can really hurt these days, as many people live paycheck to paycheck and need every hour they were promised (normally 40 a week). Depending on how long your days off, that could normally mean you'r missing 8-12 hours for that week. That's why most jobs give you a paid holiday. It would technically be unfair to do that. And while they legally could, it would make that business look bad. And cause people not to work there because they are forced to not work holidays and don't get paid. But basically, they pay you because they're making you not work and would be robbing you of hours or whatever... Getting extra money for working holidays is usually because you have to work on a holiday, which means missing out on family time or the free money that everyone else is getting. Which is why they'll pay those people more. Even if you don't care about the holiday. Because it would definitely be unfair to make you work for regular price because you don't care about the holiday when they would pay other people more just because they do... But that extra oney is usually pretty nice. Especially depending on how many hours you work.
