Tobacco smoking is the lowest it's ever been, making it illegal until 21 isn't as big a deal today as it would had been 30 years ago. Also helps that a bunch of states already made it 21, just like making pot federally legal in a few years won't be as big a deal as it would had been in the past.

Is that accounting for the transition to vaping?

That's going to vary from person to person. My contention is with his implication that the military is mostly for dumb kids who couldn't hack it in school and had no chance at college. When the military is actually a good option for getting access to that additional training, certification, experience, and education.

That is what they mostly do. Most jobs in the military aren't in direct combat. Especially if you go Navy or Air Force.

Navy has a lot of ITs, for example. They get some basic fundamentals training at A School, then on-the-job training at Sea or Shore duties, they can use NavyCOOL to earn a variety of certifications, or tuition assistance/GI Bill to go for a degree.

They also have electrical and mechanical engineers, nuclear engineers, foreign language translators, aviation mechanics, cooks, and so on.

Yea I'd be down for raising the enlistment age too. A lot of the 18 year olds they get are teens just out of high school, didn't do well in high school, don't put much thought into college or anything else and just say "well, might as well do this"...even 20 would be good. Gives them a good two years post high school to potentially gain some work experience, think it through and make a more educated decision as opposed to instantly saying "Yea i was an average C student all throughout HS i'm on my way to enlist" immediately after graduation. It's weird that you seem to assume it's mostly C-grade students or worse who enlist because they don't know what else to do or don't have better options. It's also weird that you think of it as the military taking advantage of vulnerable people.

A lot of people who enlist do it to utilize the advantages that military service offers. Like paying for certifications and college, getting that valuable job experience, and having something that looks good to future employers. Or a whole career.

I would assume this means that fans of a franchise and movie critics tend to value different things in the media they watch.

A lot of fans did not like that TLJ wanted to "subvert" expectations. Nerd fandom is all about that fan service.

"A School" is US Navy job training school. Every enlisted sailor goes to an A School to learn the basic fundamentals of their rating. Can range from a couple weeks to a couple years, depending on the particular rating.

Mine was about 6 months and most of my class mates were dudes ranging from 19 - 23. The circle game was really popular and everytime we had a picture of our class taken, at least one of those kids was showing a circle and a dumb grin.

Fun story. Around 10 - 11 years ago, I actually had to defend my then-girlfriend-now-wife from an aggressive dog. She was outside in the yard and some dog, I think it might have been sick or something, came by. I dunno.

I heard her scream because the front door was open, so I ran outside and there was this dog jumping and snapping at her. So, I ran out there and got between them. Kicked the dog in the face when it tried snapping at me. I guess that was enough, because it left us alone after that.

It's not restricted to that. When I was in A School, some guys would do it for just about any picture. We have one who did it during our graduation rehearsal picture and another who did it in a picture while we were marching back from class.

The restriction desired is typically on letting females compete with only other females. Transwomen are not actually female.

You can wiggle about with the definition of "woman", but transwomen aren't female. No amount of current technology surgery and hormone therapy will make them female. That's why so many people want to differentiate between sex and gender.

Rebel, if I'm reading him right, is saying that Lovecraft's racism hasn't had a meaningful negative impact on his legacy as a writer and Rowling not being pro-trans isn't likely going to have a meaningful negative impact on the legacy of her writing.

So, a bit off topic, but I think the reason you get more "the left eating their own" (if you want to use that kind of terminology) occurrences is because of the nature of progressivism.

Progress implies a continuous push, so with each generation of new activists, they're a little more progressive than the generation before them. So, the more progressive generations will eventually look back at the less progressive generation preceding them and shit on them for not being progressive enough.

Compared to conservatives that are mostly about maintaining an agreed upon status quo. Or, occasionally, even a regressive push.

Hope it's nothing to be worried about.

It ended by Superman inspiring Dr. Manhattan to rediscover his humanity and hope and to narrate the future he sees of endless worlds created by future crises, all centered on the paragon Superman. Resulting in Dr. Manhattan restoring the various heroes he has erased from the timeline and the entire DC multiverse, then returning himself and the other Watchmen characters to their own universe (except the Comedian, who was killed by Lex Luthor). He also removed all nuclear weapons from his world to set it on a path toward peace.

Then Manhattan took a newborn boy from Mime and Marionette, raised him for a couple years before giving up his own existence to pass his powers into that boy and leaving him on the doorstep of an older Silk Spectre and Night Owl to be raised in a happy family and grow up to be the Watchmen universe's Superman. The boy had Manhattan's insignia on his forehead and was named Clark.

So, Manhattan is kind of non-existent, but maybe reincarnated himself into a boy he named Clark and bestowed his powers on. Because all these universes need a Superman who is good and just and his didn't have one. He realized he couldn't do it because he was too detached from humanity and that hero needed to be raised in a warm, loving human home to keep grounded despite his massive power.

I left out some details, meta-commentary, etc but that's the basic summary.
